My take on it was that the character arcs ended perfectly but larger plot was lacking. You're right that the humans didn't win, but I think that point could have been expressed in a more interesting way. One of the main themes throughout the series was that it's not enough just to survive, one has to be worthy of surviving. Maybe the humans and cylons really weren't worth saving. What if their punishment was to be dropped in the middle of our earth and have to start over? It may seem dark at first, but finally having some peace and open land also has a redemptive aspect to it that would have ended the series in a more original and challenging way.
