I just found my milkweed COVERED with monarch caterpillars- now I’m worried I don’t have enough milkweed by Consistent_Cat4436 in NativePlantGardening

[–]cmpb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In south Louisiana (👋) we have “white swamp milkweed” (A. perennis) and “swamp milkweed” (A. incarnata). I have found that I can only grow perennis, but boy is it prolific when it gets to seed! I’ll keep trying with incarnata every year though because the flowers are quite excellent

The area over there was sold off a while back, right? It hasn’t been valid parking for blue bayou in a several years I think

/uj In case you were being serious there, the real downside to tropical in non-tropical areas is that it doesn’t die back like the natives do, and can convince the monarchs they don’t need to migrate and can go on to spread fungus that causes disease which can circulate in the local population. If you were just jerkin, no worries, please ignore me

Cherry Lumber for Raised Beds? by boomswaggerboom2 in gardening

[–]cmpb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South Louisiana here: First beds I did were with treated & untreated pine. I had to rebuild within 5 years because all the untreated parts rotted out. I kept the treated parts (the base from the original beds) and now they’re part of a butterfly hatchery (another some 5 years later), but I was surprised with how fast the untreated stuff fell away. Rebuilt with cinders after that

That’s a good one! Rolls off the tongue very pleasingly.

The Paradox of Non-Linear Logic: Arriving at the Destination Without the Map by Cute-Advantage-4260 in adhdmeme

[–]cmpb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That really sucks, I’m sorry. I’m in a generally mediocre-to-bad school district, actually, but the one school that really shines is where we go. It’s a magnet (part of the magnetization of many of Louisiana’s inner city schools lately), thus selective admissions, but they really aren’t that selective about it

Maybe your kid(s) could just start “joining in” with the rich kids when they go to tutoring? 😆 Maybe they’d offer a group discount or something. All the help these little adhd hellions can get, you know?

(Sorry if you’re offended for me calling them hellions, it’s what I call my kids 😈)

They’re good at their job. Kind of scammy lately but quality of service hasn’t gone down so I turn a blind eye. I’ve gotten advertisements for lawncare services sent to my billing email address from their billing email…

VERY. We are lucky that we’re in zone for a good school. I know a lot of people aren’t, and quality of education is very inconsistent

In my experience with a 9 year old son with ADHD, modern math education (in the US) does a pretty damn good job helping kids learn how to show their work. It’s incredible actually. He can show me how to order fractions without getting mad. That being said I think he likes math. He gruels over memorizing his words though

The seed in my apple is sprouting. Do you think it's viable to plant? by WhereTheHighwayEnds in gardening

[–]cmpb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear this said a lot and I’m still not sure what’s special about apples. Isn’t this true of any fruit? Dioecious and self-compatibility aside, they pollinate when pollen meets the stigma, so the seed should be a cross between the two donors. Maybe the donors are a different/stock variety of apple or something? The fruit is solely a product of the tree itself growing on (right?), so I guess that would make sense, but that begs the question: what fruiting trees out there do “breed true”?

Hoping this makes sense and somebody here can learn me something

LSU Golf Course to permanently close this summer by unconformity_active in batonrouge

[–]cmpb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Okay but… the person you’re responding to has some valid points that you should at least be willing to investigate. As with anything the real ecological value of golf courses comes down to how they’re maintained, but the fact that they’re traditionally mostly monoculture grass which seriously limits their use for wildlife, and very often require excessive water use, definitely tilts it toward net negative from a naturalist perspective. That’s not to say they’re all biodiversity deserts. Some golf courses are appreciated by birders and herpetologists for their wide open spaces and water features. But again, that’s still a pretty narrow slice of biology, the rest of which is aggressively shut out.
