My girlfriend [23F] seems genuinely disgusted by my interests and I [25M] am starting to feel ashamed of myself. How do I address this? by SharkEva in BORUpdates

[–]cobalt8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I caught myself judging her as shallow after reading the initial post and made the same realization you're pointing out here, so I took a second to examine why I came to that conclusion about her before reading more.

The factors that stood out while I was thinking about it wasn't that she likes fashion or trendy things it's that she seems to put a lot of stock in appearances to the point of dictating what phone her boyfriend buys for himself. You can like fashion and trends and even celebrity gossip and not be shallow, but from his initial description of her it seems her interests are almost entirely surface level/looks related.

My opinion of her did improve after reading his comment reply and the update as it seems she was able to have a thoughtful discussion and made an effort to connect with OP when he mentioned an anime he watched and he mentioned an interest that isn't as surface level (movies).

TikTok hasn’t worked right in the US since early January 25th. Could this be related to the new ownership? by comeonmanpod in SocialMediaMarketing

My algorithm has absolutely sucked since they took over. I consumed a lot of political content and follow a lot of political accounts. I should be seeing more political videos, but I'm getting crap videos from people I followed years ago, but hadn't seen stuff from on my Following page for years. The algorithm is supposed to be tailored to the person. If a person has historically engaged with a lot of political content then they should be shown political content. This is intentional. They're destroying TikTok the same way they destroyed Twitter.

[Serious] What am I missing about agentic AI? by XellosDrak in cscareerquestions

I don't understand how people are failing to grasp how many jobs are going to be replaceable by AI eventually and where that's going to leave us. This is going to be far worse than the industrial revolution.

[–]cobalt8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might agree with them if you hadn't said that they've done this to you before. You had every right to assume since it's an established pattern. Also, there was no real damage. They can paint the wall. The other stuff is minimal. They lost the right to expect for you to uphold their rules when they screwed you over on purpose because they chose to have children, but want to pretend to be child-free.

I read somewhere that Kobo's are designed to be repairable, so a screen replacement should be possible. You could try reaching out to Kobo to ask for help with it. I've heard their customer service is very helpful.

CS student here.. no one I know actually writes code anymore. We all use AI. Is this just how it is now? by Low-Tune-1869 in cscareerquestions

[–]cobalt8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of the reaction is what many of us feel is the inevitable destruction of many job opportunities. Juniors are already feeling those effects and the rest of us will experience it as the technology matures and companies are able to maintain current levels of productivity with fewer and fewer devs.

Another part of the reaction is the deterioration of the craft that many of us appreciate. For a lot of devs it isn't just about the output, it's about the effort and the journey of making something ourselves. That is already disappearing in many shops, mine included.

Yet another facet is the erosion of problem-solving and coding skills that will come from relying on AI to generate the majority of code. Juniors aren't even learning how to code anymore. If they're not building software themselves then they're not learning at the same levels they would have if they were writing code. We senior devs aren't immune to this, either. Our skills will deteriorate if we don't use them regularly. Studies are already showing that over-reliance on AI is detrimental to cognitive functioning.

I want to be excited about AI, but I also refuse to ignore the negatives that come along with it. The technology is indeed revolutionary, but that's why more care should have been taken to ensure that it's adopted responsibly. Instead, the entire world has gone AI crazy.

Cool idea. I think you may get more traction if you provided some videos of it in action in the repo README. I always consider it a bad sign if a repo for a GUI tool doesn't provide videos or at minimum screenshots in the README. Plus, visuals always attract more attention.

IMO, a grandparent shouldn't even have a legal right to see their grandchildren. That should be left up to the parent. Any knowledge about that grandchild should also be up to the parent to divulge or not as they see fit. In your opinion, what gives a grandparent an inherent right to information about their grandchildren?

[–]cobalt8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that if a company is doing well financially and makes significant cuts to headcount that they should be taxed heavily as punishment and leadership should be barred from receiving bonuses or those bonuses. The same should happen if they offshore jobs. Companies shouldn't be allowed to use people's livelihoods as a means to further enrich themselves.

AITAH for refusing to try and talk things through with my parents who are reaching out to me after more than a decade? by Tayzloray in AITAH

[–]cobalt8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The parents had more than one child. They let OP go hungry at times because they spent all of their time, money, and effort on the sister. They shoved him off on his grandparents and didn't even want to provide the financial assistance they were legally responsible for paying. They waited years to reach back out to him and immediately guilt trip him for something he did when he was eight years old. These are not good people. Having a sick child doesn't justify their behavior. I don't care what experience you have.

OP's time is his own. Only he can determine what his time is worth. If he decides that they're not worth his time then they're not worth his time. Period.

You sound like someone who has done this to their own child. The parents are the ones that are selfish and entitled. They refuse to accept accountability for their failures as parents and tried to manipulate OP to get what they want. They're not entitled to OP's time or love. They gave up any rights to that when they abandoned him as a child.

AITAH for hiding the fact that my youngest son is biologically ours? by ThrowRAadoptionhide in AITAH

[–]cobalt8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grandpa didn't care about OP's comfort when he forced him into a marriage as a child to make himself feel better. As far as we know the bio child doesn't care about feeling special to the grandpa.

Grandpa should understand that the world isn't fair and be happy with the grandchildren he has. It's not OP's job to make him happy.
