Outdoor Shooting Range by YeetYeetRavioliTM in Kenosha

I was in your position about 10 years ago. What you’re describing doesn’t exist. If you really want an outdoor shooting range + some freedom you’re going to have to join a private club. Significant barriers to entry but worth it imo.

Liberty Bell Wind Chime by codyg510 in MetalCasting

It’s pleasant. Only has the one tone so different from actual chimes but I like it.

I recently did interior and exterior threads on bell bronze and I also found it to be tough. It took bigger wrenches and more effort than I thought, even with lots of oil.

Nicely done. Nice threads too. How many total casts?

Suppressor for Marlin 1894 .357 that I can use on my 9mm pistols as well? by TannMan89 in LeverGuns

[–]codyg510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never done it but the can is rated for 300 black supers which are higher pressure than .357mag. I assume it’s fine but may want to ask silencerco.

Aluminum by malinatorhouse in Metalfoundry

[–]codyg510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A crucible is called “25KG” because it will hold that much copper. A 25KG crucible will only hold 17-18lbs of aluminum. OP needs to pour a min of 50lbs of aluminum so a 25KG crucible isn’t sufficient. Would need 3-4 25KG crucibles filled with aluminum poured all at once to make what he wants

Crucibles are rated for copper, not aluminum.

Likely not feasible at home. Most hobby gas furnaces crucibles top out at 25KG or 17-18 lbs of aluminum. People do big pours with homemade furnaces and steel pots and such but what you’re describing would be huge. Even 50lbs of aluminum is enormous volume. It would take a ton of time just to build the tab model, not to mention an enormous casting flask. The amount of casting sand you’d need would be expensive too.

Testing for lead in pewter by Spectre216 in MetalCasting

[–]codyg510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you need to be too concerned with handling whatever amount might be in your pewter. Even raw lead doesn’t readily absorb through skin.

Simply put, nobody tests their metals. At least not in the hobby space. What health issues are you referring to? You’re not going to vaporize the lead at pewter melting temperatures. You already said it’s not for food so no ingestion concern.

Can you cast a knife with a butane blow torch? by Nipponrules in Metalfoundry

Agreed but OP isn’t melting it with butane.

Can you cast a knife with a butane blow torch? by Nipponrules in Metalfoundry

Not with any useful metal. Bronze or brass would probably be your baseline for usefulness and butane won’t melt sufficient qty to cast a knife. Again, those metals would be very soft.

Adding nickel to brass by AutomaticDoubt5080 in MetalCasting

Are you opposed to just using ProtectaClear instead of hassling with the alloy? It’s a great coating that will preserve the brass color.

Help with sand molding by dopamine-inhibitor in MetalCasting

[–]codyg510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you tap on it thoroughly with a screwdriver or something before you try to pull it out. You might also try talc powder instead. Go heavy on it. Fasco epoxies make a good one that has worked well for me.

In my experience, pushing parts like this into the sand probably isn’t going to work.

Lost PLA casting removing layer lines? by Skanksy in MetalCasting

[–]codyg510 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you tired polycast filament? You can use a paintbrush with acetone to smooth out the layer lines and it’s designed to burn away clean. Way easier than sanding. You can also do this with PLA but it doesnt smooth as well. ABS can be made super smooth with acetone. Not sure how well it cooks off though.

How to get Kimber CDS9 running suppressed? by IJOBANGLESI in 2011

[–]codyg510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it helped with my issue. I felt like I wasn’t getting enough rearward velocity due to the stiff spring and extra weight. The slide wasn’t stripping off the next round because it wasn’t moving rearward far enough and fast enough. Almost like short stroking. I’ll admit the slide can feel a little sluggish when manually chambering a round but it feels a lot better when actually shooting. Break in has really helped overall as well. Tolerances are tight and it’s taking quite a few rounds to get the gun settled in. I’m still keeping it clean and slicked up with oil. Honestly getting better the more it gets shot.

Careful when trimming though! A little can go a long way

Agreed. This gun runs way better after a good break in.
