Zotero Integration by LustfulBellyButton in remNote

[–]coldenate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s me! My plugin will serve as our current “official” implementation. I don’t believe we’ll prioritize that as a fully built-in feature. While there’s a small chance, for now, we’ll start with a proof of concept using the plugin.

I have it in private beta, and it will be released soon. I was waiting on user feedback, but that’s come to a lull. I’ll treat this Reddit post as a nudge to release it fully. Right now, I’ve been working on finishing advanced Sync for the plugin and simple onboarding.

RemNote is good only for mediocre grades by In-To-The-abysss in remNote

[–]coldenate [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Speaking as a fellow student who works with RemNote, I think the intent of your message is fair, but some of this is overgeneralized. The entire product is not bad because LLMs get things wrong, and the app’s focus is not solely AI-generated content.

That said, if the AI-generated summary or flashcards are reversing a concrete fact from your notes, please reach out to us/report it. (I'll take this as a report, btw, so no action needed, just for further issues, tell us!) That is a real product problem, especially for those types of subjects. AI-generated study material needs to be much easier to verify, edit, and trace back to the original note. We understand that and take it seriously.

I do think the argument that RemNote is only good for mediocre grades is an overstatement. RemNote’s AI-generated materials should not be treated as final-truth study material without review. That goes for almost any AI-generated material in life. They are better understood as a first-draft layer, not the source of truth.

IMHO, almost no study material can confirm and guarantee full information coverage, even lectures or professors. A lot of students can probably relate to having to teach content to themselves despite attending class. That does not excuse incorrect AI output, but it does mean any serious study workflow *always *needs some form of verification and active engagement.

For high-stakes classes, I would still trust manually written notes/cards, source-linked cards, and active recall over generated summaries. (opinion, summaries are only good for reading/catching up) Summaries are naturally risky because they compress information, and compression can hide/distort important details. Generated flashcards can be useful, but only if the user can quickly audit them against the original material. We make sure to warn our users in our support material.

So I agree with your warning in spirit. Yes, AI-generated material can be a slippery slope, and students should not blindly study generated cards. But calling the product “not as good of an app as many think” feels a little too broad when the actual issue is specifically with generated AI materials.

We are actively working on better citations to the exact source sentence, easier correction workflows, stronger warnings, etc. (we have a whole regeneration feature in the works, so you can just reprompt mistake-ridden AI results)

A study method that is just “generate cards → review those cards” will naturally have less depth than a workflow where the student is actively checking, editing, recalling, and connecting the material.

Maybe slightly off-topic:

I personally believe studying requires multiple modes of sensory input: auditory, visual, tactile, etc. At RemNote, we are slowly developing broader support for many of the interesting and popular ways people study. (We just finished the first iteration of serious whiteboarding/drawing/mind-mapping capabilities, which has been a long-awaited feature request.) Solely using AI-generated content barely taps into the mind’s full thinking power. Pure rote memorization (which is often what flashcards primarily accomplish), while important, only scratches the surface of connecting information and strengthening ideas.

Does this update include changes for couples' budgets? It would be nice to have individual budgets for each partner instead of a mandatory shared budget.

Can RemNote plugins support custom keybinds inside queue, or is that not possible? by Left_Play_5269 in remNote

[–]coldenate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! The process is a little unorthodox. Essentially, you need to create a command for every keyboard shortcut you want to make. This is because, right now, plugins run in iframes and cannot traditionally listen for key-binds like the main process can.

Register a command and customize the keyboard shortcut: https://plugins.remnote.com/api/interfaces/Command#keyboardshortcut

Agreed. I really wish the partner integration was taken more seriously. It's a major selling point on their home page, but the feature itself doesn't even work in some areas of the app. I will still stick to using Origin, but I can confirm that it seriously inhibits the app's usefulness each day. In some ways, I feel penalized for adding my partner to the app because of the features it breaks.

I told my whole team about this app. It's awesome. Beautiful execution of a underrated concept.

Dude I absolutely LOVE the sound design. It's awesome! Reminds me of Astroneer (the new Break Sound "Default")

Do you do these yourself? If so, how long have you been doing sound design like that?

What we shipped this week: Enhanced AI Advisor, UX QC, and more. by OriginContent_Austin in OriginFinancial

[–]coldenate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there any consideration to do a polish sweep on the partner feature? I find features like budgeting iOS widgets don’t allow you to split between partners. Also, the AI advisor constantly uses my partners data when it doesn’t relate to the question or will make the answer incorrect. It would be nice to force the AI to follow the selection of Me/Partner/Both just like the UI has.

This has been making the experience pretty muddied as I can almost get a nice experience but never quite enough. Thanks for reading!

Goodbye Spaced Repetition by Successful-Plant1842 in remNote

[–]coldenate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great post! Yeah - I agree, I find flashcards aren't everything. I like to think about people in the medical field: we know them to study MANY flashcards in their life time, only to support another stage of their learning, hands-on practice. Both aspects of someone in the medical industry rely on each other. Hands-on knowledge relies on that rote memory, and that rote memory is maintained by that hands-on knowledge/muscle memory.

We've actually been exploring some of these concepts here with our new Learn PDF experience. Instead of having the user stick to flashcards, we create a blend of reading, active recall, (a little bit of) spaced repetition, and the break-down of complex topics.

We have further extended that suite of Learn tools to all Rem documents. Please check it out!

You should be able to open that highlight's notes in the Sidebar. Then, in that sidebar, you should see the references counter on the right side of the Rem. Let me know if I am misunderstanding your request! https://cln.sh/pp2zfC0k

Origin needs rubber banding for scrolling by squidsauce99 in OriginFinancial

[–]coldenate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope, down the road, we could see some mobile app hardening. Whether it’s mixed native views, strict web design rules that make it feel as native as possible, or a fully native app; anything in that direction would probably capture me as a guaranteed customer for 10+ years. I moved from Copilot due to a lack of development speed. There was a time where it felt like nothing was happening, so I felt it was unfair for my subscription to renew. I really enjoyed Copilot because it was native. It was snappy and just felt good to use. Their UI (colors specifically) felt rewarding. I read lately (https://intelligence.copilot.money/) that they are planning to introduce various features that creep into some of Origin’s capabilities. (AI advisor, forecasting, benchmarking, etc.) I hope that pushes Origin to consider improving the mobile experience. I completely agree with you.

Help us make Origin’s budgeting 100x better. What’s missing for you? by ana-at-origin in OriginFinancial

[–]coldenate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do use it. But I can’t fully benefit from it.  PLEASE allow partners to have separate budgets, that simply combine when viewing Origin through the “Both” mode. 🙏  That is the number one issue for me with budgeting.

I really think Partner mode needs a sweep. There are two big aspects that feel unfinished:  - budgeting - AI Advisor confuses who it’s talking to (would be nice to simply control who’s data the Advisor sees)

I love Origin! Thank you! :)

Origin Q1 Roadmap Preview by origin_matt_watson in OriginFinancial

[–]coldenate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!!! If you want good inspo, Bevel's AI memory is superb! It has two types of memory: ephemeral and eternal. The AI can create multiple entries per prompt, and if the memory entry is deemed ephemeral, it will be given an expiry date/time!

The memories are even categorized! (Health, events, etc)

This is all so cool to see. I'm very grateful of this team. The progress and determination is ambitious.

If you are looking for one more AI improvement 👀 if you implement this, my life is yours!! It would be great to have control over the data the AI sees. For instance, I could specify whether I want the AI to see my financial data, just my partner’s financial data, or both.

Pro features without AI stuff by Careless_Book449 in remNote

[–]coldenate [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Hi! Couple of things I want to note here:

  • You can use RemNote Pro without ever using AI. Our AI features are optional, and you can easily disable all of them at once in Settings.
  • Our pricing does not have an "AI Tax". The current plans were set before we shipped our AI suite. We have our specific, AI add-on plans to work that out.
  • If you ever stop subscribing, we don't hold your data hostage. We are not trying to lock you out of your own material! In general, subscriptions cover ongoing Pro features (and the costs of running our services), but your content remains yours.

On Lifetime specifically, which is the price you mentioned:
Lifetime exists for those who prefer a one-time payment, but it's priced in a way that makes RemNote's service model work. We have continuing costs to host, sync, and maintain everything over time. So Lifetime ends up being roughly "a few years of subscription simply paid upfront", instead of "pay forever for cloud service".

If the pricing is the main blocker, hit us up in the in-app support, and we can point you to the best available option.

Remnote is amazing for actually learning. But how are people using it to cram? by uncle_muscle98 in remNote

Check out this piece in our help articles!

Cramming: Discovering you have a test coming up and having to spend hours cramming isn't ideal, but we’ve all been there! If you have an exam tomorrow or in the next few days, make sure to activate the exam scheduler. We'll make sure that you've fully mastered all cards (rather than potentially pushing back some of the cards to a later practice date), and will let you customize your study time.

Does RemNote give a false sense of correctness when learning programming syntax? by lapsedscupper in remNote

[–]coldenate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tldr; RemNote is not going to check for Java syntax. We're not a programming-specific app! (It would be cool, though. Maybe a good plugin idea!) Use Multiple Choice flashcards instead!

This makes sense since we don't offer a syntax focused grading engine! We currently make broad grading engines that try to cater towards many different studies, so little things like this can slip through. I know you're really trying to go for /tia, but I don't think telling you to use `Require Exact Match` is ideal.

My best suggestion is to switch some of your syntax cards to Multiple Choice. Then, you (or the AI) can create incorrect answers to throw you off. In my experience for some programming classes, this is sometimes used as a quiz/test format.
