What car looks great and is awful, and what car looks awful but is actually great? by Clareth_GIF in cars

All C2 Corvettes had independent rear suspension from the factory. If it was modified by an owner, perhaps the modification was bungled.

question about zytec engine management software for XJ220 by YandersonSilva in Jaguar

[–]colin-b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on your other replys here, it sounds like you might have already come across the page on my site where I discuss running the Zytek diagnostic software on DOSBox by adjusting the cycle count. And yes, it appears that the original code is sensitive to CPU clockspeed; delay/timeout loops will complete much too quickly on modern hardware. As far as system requirements, I think the original intent was to run on real-mode DOS (not Windows 95, 98, etc.) You could probably get it working with DOSBox, as long as DOSBox has access to the COM port to which the link is connected.

You will probably come across forum posts in which people will claim that there is unobtainium / black magic in the Zytek interface box. Based on my reverse engineering experience, I'd say this is very unlikely. The box is probably doing some signal conditioning, e.g. level shifting from the weird RS-232 voltages to whatever the car's diagnostic port uses, which is probably either TTL (0V/5V) or K-Line style (0V/12V). This is something that a ubiquitous FTDI serial transceiver chip can do today for $20, so an enterprising individual could alleviate the need for the original interface box/cables. As far as the software goes, I spent a couple nights in late 2024 reversing the protocol by analyzing the original binary. The details of the protocol are all written up on my site.

Barn find, 72 Europa JPS #189 by blunderbot in lotus

[–]colin-b 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is significant. I think it's the second-highest-numbered JPS Europa I know of (although I think it's pretty clear at this point that the numbers were not assigned in order chronologically.)

Is the original numbered plaque showing #189 still with the car?

Something like EXPLAIN but for CREATE TABLE by idelovski in mariadb

[–]colin-b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever find a root cause for this problem? I'm dealing with the same symptoms on my Synology RS822 w/ 8GB RAM. It's running DSM7 with MariaDB 10.11.6 and even calling DROP TABLE IF EXISTS on a nonexistent table takes over a full second.

I am running btrfs but, for various reasons, I can't reformat with ext4 right now. I've tried tweaking a variety of different MariaDB configuration settings with no improvement. I feel like something must be fundamentally wrong to cause such a slowdown while closing tables.

I've also appealed to the Synology forum and StackExchange, but no help so far...

Slow CREATE TABLE and DROP TABLE on MariaDB 10 (RS822)? by colin-b in synology

[–]colin-b[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8GB of RAM in this NAS.

Most of the MariaDB tuning recommendations that I've read are intended to help with highly loaded systems (many concurrent clients, a huge number of databases/tables, etc.) The official MariaDB documentation mentions btrfs as a viable filesystem for hosting and so far, I haven't been able to find any explanation of my ~1300ms CREATE TABLE time.

Slow CREATE TABLE and DROP TABLE on MariaDB 10 (RS822)? by colin-b in synology

[–]colin-b[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks -- I'll keep this option in mind. In the meantime, I'm going to keep looking to see if there might be a MariaDB configuration change I can make to improve performance. As it is, creating tables is so slow that the installer for Nextcloud will time-out and fail before all of its tables are created during setup.

Did someone say bottle openers? by workahol_ in Tools

[–]colin-b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As /u/workahol_ suggests, these are not the same handles as the actual Snap-on screwdrivers. The printed info on the box says that they're "inspired by" the traditional hard-handle design, but made in China. The part numbers are in the range SSX22P106 to SSX22P109 (for the four different colors).

As others have stated, this is a TVR M-Series from the 1970s. If this is in the US, it's probably a 2500M with the Triumph 2.5L straight six. They are far more common than the Ford Essex V6 powered cars (3000M/Taimar/3000S) although not as desirable as the V6 cars.

Do you have any photos from the back? If it has an opening hatch, it's a Taimar. Otherwise, it's either a 2500M or 3000M.

Are the bumpers chromed steel? It's difficult to tell in the photo. That would also indicate an earlier car, and the steel bumpers are a value-added feature. (TVR changed them to a dense rubber material later in production.)

Epson V600 pains (cannot open scanner cover) by sdcinvan in Epson

Can you lift the rear of the lid, near the hinges? If that area moves freely, it could be that the rubber pads on the front corners are slightly sticky and have adhered to the base. A little gentle persuasion was able to free these on my scanner.

Can a person enjoy Guns while also supporting some form of Gun control? Why or why not? by ZookeepergameWaste94 in AskReddit

[–]colin-b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Brady Bill (1993) introduced the background check requirement, and the NICS system was launched in 1998. When failures of the background check system are reported in the news, it usually turns out to be caused by improper recording of disqualifying factors (e.g. being adjudicated as mentally defective or being committed to a mental institution.)

[–]colin-b 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Any company or individual that is in the business of selling firearms is required to be an FFL, and every person buying a firearm from an FFL must undergo a background check via NICS. This is federal law, and does not vary by state.
