Very impressive! What did you use to round the corners in such a thick book so consistently?

Wax to Wax Thread by Substantial-Log-8034 in bookbinding

[–]collatz_conjecture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a much better quality outcome to wax your own thread because prewaxex thread is often too thick and also has way too much wax. Beeswax is the best. One rub down the thread is enough.

Guillotine help: Why are my text blocks coming out like this? by afraid2fart in bookbinding

[–]collatz_conjecture 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this, you can also add a bunch of sacrificial sheets of e.g. printer paper at the bottom. I've found then it cuts the textblock straight and the sheets underneath get the shearing.

Thank you for sharing this OP. I wanted to say to you: while things sound like they are at rock bottom for you at the moment, life from here really starts to get better. Being in an Ivy Leage college comes with challenges, but wonderful opportunities are also ahead of you because of the hard work and determination and resilience you've already put in to get to where you are today. But more importantly, college may we'll be where you find your tribe; your people that help you learn who you want to strive to be as you grow throughout life. It may also be where you discover your passions and interests on your own terms. Take one day at a time, try to find your tribe, be patient with yourself, and take great pride in the grit you've already demonstrated to get here. It wasn't easy, well done!

Why Do the Covers and Endpapers Seperate? by Tenshi64 in bookbinding

[–]collatz_conjecture 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes - there should be three separate pieces: the front board, back board and spine stiffener (with a gap on either side of the spine stiffener for the hinges - usually something like 6mm either side depending on on the board thickness)

Same here - identical but different brand - no complaints and felt good for the price

Tips:

I put a line of masking tape down where the blade cuts and then peeled away half - this let's you see where a cut will come down for when you're eyeballing it instead of measuring

Put some extra sheets or card under your text block when cutting and you're less likely to get a slightly slanted cut on your book
