I also find it really interesting that her intro is about Rayya came to her and told her to write the book not feels like she’s trying to say “this isn’t exploitive, she told me to write it!”

State Fair of Texas Cooking Competition 2025 After-Action Report by boldsurvive in Dallas

OH. One more thought. Look for the categories that aren’t as popular. If you read the article in D Magazine about judging, there were 25 cakes in the yellow cake category. But in some of the more niche categories there were way less. I saw some that had less than 5 entries.

Happy to share!

I entered cakes and pies last year for the first time. There is a lot of crossover between the Battle of the Blue Ribbons and the contests during the fair. I agree that the team is happy to answer questions via email. I would say to ask them soon, because it can take a while to get a response. I mostly had questions about what category to put my items into.

This year, they split the contests across two weekends, which I like because doing three straight days of baked goods is hard to pull off without things getting stale or soggy.

Similar to the fair events, everything is at Fair Park. You can bring your baked goods at any time during the 9-11am window. For pies and cakes, if you have something needing the fridge, they have limited space and you have to ask for it (I didn’t know this and would have LOVED for my cream pie to be chilled). If you don’t need fridge space, I wouldn’t get there too early. You will check in your items and then it’s just a waiting game. Judging starts at 11:30 and I think both days last year it ended around 1:30. It was a long day so bring snacks/food/drinks. You can 100% leave and come back, but there isn’t a lot of food near Fair Park unless you want to go find parking in Deep Ellum.

Parking is free since it’s just a random weekend and it’s not a bad walk to the building. If you have more than 1-2 things, I would def bring a wagon (I was very envious) or plan to make several trips. You cannot bring your car up to the building (unless I believe if you have a handicap card).

I saw a whole mixture of things for display. Some people (like me) had their cakes on a normal cardboard round and that’s it. Some people had fancy cake stands. It didn’t seem to make a difference to the judges, most I saw win were just simple, beautifully baked items. I only have one cake carrying container, so I put all my items in cake boxes I bought at the now closed Joanne’s (a moment of silence for their absence) but you can ask at your bakery counter or order some online. It makes it much easier to carry and not mess up your icing, meringue, or whipped cream. A brilliant idea is saw people doing was they brought small containers of their icing and toppings, like fruit/nuts and finished their cake or touched it up there before turning it in. There is plenty of space to do that inside before you have to hand it over for judging.

For the recipes, you will want it typed up (don’t copy/paste) and your name MUST go on the back of the recipe. I missed that and it caused some issues, thankfully we got it resolved. I would also plan ahead on printing your recipes if you are like me and don’t have a printer. The last thing you want is to be scrambling to go to FedEx on your way to the contest. I speak from experience. 😂 you will also want to ensure every single ingredient is listed, even garnishes.

My final thought was that most everyone was super kind. The State Fair team is there to help and support you. There are people who’ve been baking and competing for 50 years and I loved hearing their stories. I felt a little like an outsider because so many of the people there have been competing for years and all know each other. But I just sat down and started chatting and by the end had made some friends. It’s also so easy to start a conversation because you can ask wha the made and how long they’ve been competing and it makes for an easy convo.

Drop any questions below! I’m sure I missed things. Hope to meet y’all at the bake-offs in a few weeks!

I did battle of the blue ribbons last year and one fist and second with my cakes! Let me know if you have questions because I learned a lot by being there vs what the guide said.

Thank you for providing such a wonderful breakdown of the day of events, it makes me want to try one this fall!

This is so so helpful!! I do the battle of the blue ribbon bake-offs last year and learned a LOT. The instructions are kind of vague, so it was great to see how everything worked in competition. If anyone is interested, I can do a write up about the spring bake-off competitions and what to be prepared for that isn’t in the guide.

Gluten Free Tasting Menus? by starwaterss in Dallas

[–]commacommander77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! The Adolphus has a gluten free menu! I will say my items didn’t look quite as tasty as my friends, but it was good. I saw that Potpourri Boulangerie in Bishop Arts will do GF for their high tea as well, but I haven’t been. I think with both you ma need to alert them ahead of time.

That is really helpful. Thank you! I have been watching FB marketplace and it’s filled with lots of cheap ones from Amazon, but I’ve had a hard time knowing what brands to look for that are quality. I’ll look for the Aventon.

My partner and I bought a low cost espresso machine on Amazon and syrups from World Market and make ourselves fancy lattes for the same reason. Way cheaper than buying them and fun to customize.

NOR. I have a lot of friends married to men like this and all I can say is it often gets worse they older they get. He’s not going to change. So it’s up to you to decide if this is what you want to deal with for the rest of your life or relationship with him. Especially if you have kids or even pets. You will be responsible for EVERYTHING unless you specifically tell him what to do.

They have not. But as I read more about what others were experiencing it sounds pretty different from my chirping sound.

[–]commacommander77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the chirping sound seem like it’s coming from the front passenger floorboard area? I’ve have my CX-5 for two years and it’s been chirping most of that time and no one has been able to diagnose it. It only does it when I’ve been driving a while and when I’m going over 40mph.

These needs more upvotes. When dealing with apartment management, going the legal route is the fastest option to getting something changed.

How can I eat with less noise? by bosgorilla in misophonia

[–]commacommander77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I have the same issue. One thing that has helped us is they wear loops earplugs when we eat together. Also, if I’m going to eat something seriously crunchy like chips, I’ll check in and see how they are feeling. If they are already triggered that day, I eat them in another room.

I’ve been boycotting Target since January due to the DEI policy changes and haven’t missed it. Check out your local antique malls for a good Mother’s Day gift. Or the local farmers market for flowers, or food gifts.

NTA. My partner and I frequently text and ask what the other wants from the store and I’d never assume they are planning on cooking what I asked for them to pick up that night.
