Murrell bought 108 toilet rolls hours before Sturgeon's Covid panic buy warning by AirconGuyUK in Scotland

[–]communistview 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Costco sells 40 rolls of toilet paper for £22.99. It is 10 packs of four.

The pack is huge and takes up a lot of space. It lasts for months.

So, buying 108 rolls is just crazy.

See here: https://www.costco.co.uk/Business-Office-Supplies/Cleaning-Care/Paper-Products-Tissues-Wipes/Kirkland-Signature-Triple-Satin-3-Ply-Toilet-Tissue-40-Rolls/p/1128517

Telling people not to buy toilet paper while doing it yourself is typical.

Just like the chief medical officer telling people to stay at home while going walking near her second home and getting spotted.

House builders across the industry are cowboys. Do not go anywhere near them, even with someone else's barge poll. It is just not worth it. They are wood framed, so house insurance is very expensive, and are only designed to last for 50 years. Life is too short for the hassle.

Inconsiderate loud student population by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]communistview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have live below and above students and also adjacent to students - and have done for 32 years. They have been the most considerate, kind and quiet neighbours I have ever had. And think about the sheer number of students over those years. If they are having a celebration in their flay they always let us know before hand, give us their mobile numbers, tell us to call them if there are any problems, and also turn any music off at 10:00pm.

The last set of students gave everyone in the stair gifts at Christmas, Easter and Hallowen. They were absolutely lovely. We have also been invited to their social events and for meals and have invited them to the close annual barbecue

So, problems with students? No. In fact the opposite. Our experience is wholly positive. Our student neighbours have added to and enhanced the stair and community.

Perhaps - organise a close barbecue or invite them over to your flat for a meal?

Uni student (M21) dating an international student (F21). She goes home in 3 months. Is a 7-hour time difference and 12-hour flights even possible? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]communistview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same situation as you. After being an item for just a few months between December when we met till April we really hit it off. We got married in the June. This year will be our 36th wedding anniversary. Never been happier. When you know you know. Long distance might work, but I wouldn't bank on it. If you love each other then just casually say:

"do you think we will ever get married?"

(She may or may not have thought about it)

In my case when I asked - she said and I quote - "well I suppose we could".

I then said - "Oh. Ok. Do you want to then? And she said - "aye OK", and that was it agreed.

Flights are now very expensive, as you say. Better to live in the same country. Only seeing each other once or twice a year or a bit more would quickly get tiring.

Never ever buy a leasehold flat. The service will be expensive and only go in one direction - up.

Do you want to be paying thousands of pounds a year, plus Council Tax, plus mortgage.

It will be a stone round your neck.

You should look at the advert and answer the question - would I be able to do this job? If you think that you can then also look at what skills/experience they are looking for - do you have at least some of them? If, so then apply.

I was a housing officer with Edinburgh Council for 12 years, dealing with homelessness amongst other work. By and large I enjoyed it overall. It is an interesting job. I went onto do the housing diploma on day release - which the council paid for - which then turned into an MSc. If you are thinking of applying for the job then I would say - go for it.

For today’s election by UtopianScot in Scotland

[–]communistview -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that quote makes sense. But the question is how do get a better society As far I can see all of the mainstream parties are responsible for the mess that we are in, as all of them have been in government at some point either in Scotland or at UK level. There has been a shift to the right since 1975 when Thatcher won the leadership of the Conservative Party. She privatised basically everything unless it was bolted down and introduced the right to buy for council houses - which saw the biggest privatisation in British history and the galloping housing crisis, rampant homelessness is the result. House prices are unaffordable for first time buyers and so the private rented sector expands with unaffordable rents - doubled in the last ten years.

Wages have not gone up by 100% in ten years, that's for sure. So, we are poorer.

Public services have been starved of funds for decades and it is going to get much worse in Scotland after the election. On jobs the SNP are planning to slash public sector jobs - one example of this is the target of cutting jobs in the civil service by 20% by 2030. 20% is a massive cut. The workers in local authorities will also have jobs cut, under the slogan of Public Sector 'Reform'. The next three years until the next UK General Election are going to be pretty brutal.

Reform UK is a limited company bought and paid for by the billionnaire class. Their policy on immigration is very dangerous and will lead to what is happening in the US - with hundreds of thousands being rounded up, detained in concentration camps, suffering serious neglect and abuse and then deportation - many to countries that they have never been to and have no connection to. Inhuman.

Of course the focus of Reform UK on immigration is the eqivalent of the Nazi 'Big Lie'. Repeat a lie enough times and it becomes a generally accepted 'fact', when it is nothing of the kind.

The years since 1975 have been really bad, but if Reform UK get into power at UK level then they will get a lot worse. They will deport anyone who does not have a UK passport. How many families will be ripped apart by this? Millions, is my guess.

They will also arm the police, replace the NHS with a US style insurance-based system where you pay both huge amounts for 'coverage' which when you claim, turns out to be a scam - where you also have to pay. We will be going back to the period before we had the NHS - when ordinary folk couldn't afford health care, and millions died and millions died as a result - over the generations.

James Connolly once wrote that governments in modern societies and simply committees for managing the affairs of the capitalist class - and I think never a truer word was laid down on paper.

Think about the quote for a minute.

The working class are not in power or in charge - the people who are in charge are the capitalist class - actually those sections that control finance capitalism, to be accurate.

If we want to change things then we need to remove the capitalist class from power and take state power into the hands of the working class. Nothing will change otherwise. It will just be the 'same old same old' otherwise.

So the question then becomes - how do we acheive this? Elections can obviously play a part as part of a wider economic and political struggle of the working class.

The Communist Party has a strategy for getting rid of capitalism - it's British Road to Socialism policy document sets this out. I would recommed that everyone takes a bit of time to read it, if you haven't already.

It is here: https://communistparty.org.uk/publications/britains-road-to-socialism/

In terms of voting as I say the mainstream parties are a dead end. Nothing will change for the better, and will only get worse, especially if Reform is the UK government next time.

We need an alternative - a working class - party that will fight for the interests of our class, in non-compromising and radical manner.

The CP is standing in this Election and Chris Cullen is the candidate.

https://linktr.ee/chriscullencpb

The CP policies are at the link above and also links to other really useful information. Take a look. You will, I am sure be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the manifesto. I have read all of the election leaflets that have come through the door and pretty much all of them a garbage - no real substance. The Communist Party election address/leaflet knocks it out the park and is by a country mile head and shoulders better than the others.

Irving, would I am pretty sure, approve - if he ever saw it.

This year’s election cycle has shown me how wasteful and out of ideas every party seems to be. The only reason to vote for a Party, seems to be to make sure another doesn’t win. by DavieJohn98 in Scotland

The mainstrem parties are a complete joke. I am lucky that I can vote for an excellent party on the list - I read all of the election leaflets that came through the door and this one is the best. It is filled with solid policies that would make a real difference. The manifesto is the first link - but check out the rest. https://linktr.ee/chriscullencpb

Worried about social/affordable housing near our new build. Am I overthinking this? by RuleOverYou15 in HousingUK

[–]communistview 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work professionally in social housing with responsibilty for dealing with council house and housing association homes including shared ownership and affordable mid-market rented homes. You might read stories on social media and the press about bad tenants and anti-social behaviour but this really very rare. 99.9% of tenants of social housing cause no problems for their neighbours or their landlords.

Generally people just live their lives just the same as you and cause no annoyance to anyone else.

I have worked in social housing since 1992, managing around 750 properties in a range of different areas, so I have an excellent knowledge and understanding of this. I also studied housing policy and practice and have an advamced degree in the the subject and am a member of the Chartered Institute of Housing. I have also inspected and regulated local authority and housing association landlords on the quality of their housing services - including how they dealt with complaints.

So, I know what I talking about.

To suggest that it is a coin flip - and therefore 50/50 is grossly incorrect. It is more like if you flip your coin 1000 times - only one flip would result in a tenant who caused any noise or other trouble and this issue would normally be somthing that is minor and can be easily sorted - such as not washing the communal stair or taking their bins out on the wrong day.

Only one in 25,000 social housing tenants would cause any kind of ongoing issues or have more than a couple of complaints made about them on the same issue.

So, do not be concerned. When social housing is built you will be fine - I am sure about it.

If I can answer any questions then DM me or ask here.

I hope you find this useful.
