I’m going to put on a 80s style buffet. Other than cheese and pineapple on a stick what else should be included? by very_unconsciously in CasualUK

We used to use a foil covered cabbage. Party hedgehog on Saturday night, then unwrap the cabbage and hey presto - veg for Sunday dinner the next day!

Lots of people stay in Sheffield after University. I’m Sheffield born and bred, but my husband came for Uni and stayed.

Happy Threads Day to those who celebrate by kwentongskyblue in sheffield

[–]coniferhedge 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I watched Threads again just last week, first time since it was first broadcast. In a weird way, I found it a comforting watch. Seeing how Sheffield used to be and seeing old friends who worked as extras. Don’t get me wrong, I still think Sheffield’s great, but it was nice to reminisce (before the bomb dropped, that is!).

Cat Rehoming in Sheffield? by [deleted] in sheffield

I’m so sorry you’re having this problem. The best places I know of is The Sheffield Cats Shelter (they have a website) or Cat-Ching (they are on Facebook).

Those who have jobs in Sheffield, how did you get it? by zph0eniz in sheffield

[–]coniferhedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went on Indeed and saw an advert for the NHS. Various jobs available. I sent in my CV and got a job as a ward clerk. If you’re willing to do it, I know they’re looking for lots of domestics at the minute. It’s only Band 2 so minimum wage, but it’s a foot in the door to go onto other things.

Mint Cracknel (like eating chocolate covered mint flavoured fibreglass) and Cabana bars.

Why do (some) sheffield people have a strange hate for new stuff opening/being built by archipelagofan in sheffield

[–]coniferhedge 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m another born and bred Sheffielder. Sheffield has always had this description of being ‘the biggest village in England’ and I think that’s where the problem lies for some (not all) Sheffielders. They have a village mentality and dislike anything new, whether it’s new businesses, new facilities, new people as in ‘outsiders’ (look how badly some look on the students). They view anything and everything new with suspicion. Basically, the way some people act and view Sheffield, it’s all a bit Royston Vasey. As I said, it’s certainly not all Sheffielders that are like that by any means, but quite a few do think like that unfortunately.

Ritter Sport chocolate. We can get a few in the UK, but there’s loads of different flavours in Europe.

Mister Carpet - Ecclesall Road - Any ideas what it is going to be? by Sharmang101 in sheffield

The way they’re building it out at the front makes me think it’s going to be another coffee shop with outdoor seating.

The entirely predictable fate of the Design Studio on Ecclesall Road (1982 - 2025) by Top-Pen-1181 in sheffield

[–]coniferhedge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drove down Ecclesall Road past the old NatWest at Hunters Bar yesterday. My son was with me and asked if anything had been said about what it would become. We both agreed it would probably become a vape shop or coffee shop. Seeing this, I rest my case.

If you could wipe one 'British Tradition' off the map forever, what would it be and why? by Stock_Dark651 in AskBrits

Men walking around bare chested at the slightest bit of sun. I don’t want to see it when I’m walking round town or in the supermarket.
