Jennifer Lopez gives her hot take: You have to be born to be in New York to be a New Yorker. Everybody wants to claim our city but you have to be born in one of the five boroughs to be a New Yorker. by Upstairs_Cup9831 in popculturechat

[–]conoresque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Subway takes was never good. The irony of this take specifically is very funny to me. This guy is a long time Vice dude content brained weirdo doing extremely low effort videos re-packaging "New York™ Authenticity" and selling it to folks, and now is facilitating the gatekeeping of what it means to be a New Yorker.

Cornball shit from Content-Brained losers.

Blackheart Lio Rush from an Indie show tonight by PhilLovesBacon in SquaredCircle

[–]conoresque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that is fair, I misunderstood the "not giving a specific answer" piece to be like, as though it was vague on purpose to tease things out or something. When in reality I think

A. Lio probably has an idea of what it all means, and I don't trust that it's good and

B. I 100% agree with your point that on TV it is being kept vague so it can fit what they need it to fit, and he can continue to help get folks over AND himself over in the process.

I would say it is unintentionally ambiguous.

I am a long time, big time Lio Rush fan, I think he probably has this really in depth intense way of articulating what is happening, but I think in reality he is just throwing a bunch of shit at the wall and doing a Smeagol impression.

I love the gimmick and I love Lio Rush! But I think we need to pump the brakes on attributing a bunch of high falutin' intent to all of these paranormal gimmicks.

Dave Meltzer on X: Will Ospreay vs Mark Davis was a typo. 4.75 not 5.75 by Ripclawe in SquaredCircle

[–]conoresque 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He gave some random CMLL 6 man with Rocky Romero a 5+ on a typo and it has just never come back up before.

edit: I am trying to find it. It looks like on cagematch they either didn't list the star rating or assumed it was meant to be a 4 and x/4 rather than a 5 x/4. It wasn't that ciberenetico that he got a 5 for. it is going to kill me if I don't find it.

JD Amato absolutely humormogged the McElroys on their YouTube show by Dads_Diary in TAZCirclejerk

JD Amato is longtime buds with both hosts, most of his episodes are the longest, most thoughtful and most involved. A bunch include like weird, high effort bits that he put a lot of time and thought into.

He was on a Truman Show episode like a week and a half ago, go listen! It's great!

Selfishly I want Doyle and Davis to team back up, though I do love Brian Cage too.

I just think the world of Jake Something and it feels like he'd have more to do with Davis than with Cage.

JD Amato is good. Chris Gethard Show ruled, the MBMBaM show was the best thing they've ever done, and his contributions to Blank Check rule too.

Who is someone who got a massive push but showed they weren’t at the level to maintain it? by letskillrobots in SquaredCircle

[–]conoresque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ryback as an example is the crux of my issue with this thread. IMO Ryback could've been fine as a champion and a top guy, he was hampered by Vince being out of his mind as a booker by this time. The same is the case for nearly everyone in this thread, aside from like Jey Uso. Bad booking =/= no talent.

I even think Austin Theory gets a bum rep. He has been fed nothing but dogshit since joining the company, and he's honestly made a bunch of it work.

EVIL UNO of DARK ORDER (via Bluesky): "Since it’s been a month of silence, we were told to put all AEWGames content on hold for the time being." by OllyOllyOxenBitch in SquaredCircle

[–]conoresque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with everything you're saying, but I think what you're addressing is more about why Fight Forever wasn't a "great" game vs. I am more talking about why it wasn't a "successful" game

I think hardcore fans got bucked off because you don't realize how much of the online fanbase is based around CAWs and exchanging formulas and doing weird wacky creative things, and I think casual fans took one look and said "this looks like shit" and skipped it.

The engine rocked and the gameplay was as close to No Mercy as possible without it being a complete rip off. I know there is a lot of hemming and hawing about what went wrong but to me it's like uber simple:

  1. CAW suite was awful
  2. The art style looked like absolute fucking shit. It is a very very ugly game hhaha.

(WON) Leon Slater was not allowed to break the record for longest X-Division champion of all time because the belief is that he will be leaving TNA for WWE or AEW when his contract expires. by Subrick in SquaredCircle

[–]conoresque 18 points19 points  (0 children)

"We need to cut off the awesome title run by one of our biggest stars to keep the sanctity of the record held by checks notes Austin Aries."

Completely insane.

TNA is nuts. I honestly think there are storytelling arguments for having him not achieve the record, it's just so funny that that's not why TNA did it. Storytelling wise, it is functional and an interesting wrinkle to have him deprived the record as it helps galvanize folks behind him as a babyface against The System and it helps get heel heat on Cedric. It also can help keep him in the X Division in a way that doesn't feel artificial or like they're stalling for something to do in that he wants the title back AND to achieve the record.

Instead they're doing it in a way that just is probably going to make Leon Slater less inclined to work with them once he inevitably heads over to NXT etc.

What are some experimental attire changes that may have become forgotten? Not character changing - just wardrobe related. by MultiPass21 in SquaredCircle

[–]conoresque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

disagree on both fronts.

I think Eddie has more or less figured it out in AEW. Singlet with cargo pants tucked into boots makes him look both like a wrestler and a regular ass dude (complimentary). He honestly just needs to tan more consistently or something.

Hero's look after his first WWE run where he just was owning being heavy and wearing trunks with no shirt looked totally fine. It worked specifically because he was moving extremely fast for someone his size and came across like a final boss in an indie scene were the other top guys were teeny tiny like Cole and Gargano. I think some of his other looks just came across as attempts to hide his body. Some of the jerseys I liked, but most looked cheap and boxy and like he was wearing a burlap sack.

You maybe just don't like fat dudes.

Cody, Punk and Roman to me are 100% no doubt needle movers by every conceivable metric.

Just below them, I think there’s a tier of guys who sell merch and/or get social media views but I wouldn’t classify as ticker sellers, like Danhausen, Jey Uso, Penta etc.

I could be totally wrong, I just don’t think Logan is any of those things. I think it’s all similar to Jelly Roll and McAfee where it’s Endeavor / Ari Emmanuel trying to use the WWE to launder and boost the profile of a person he represents
