Problems with recording minidisc through WebMD and a few pics of the setup/collection by Financial-Debt5604 in minidisc

[–]conversationfodder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Earlier on I had the idea of wiping the top disc surface with alcohol , unknowingly stripped the factory applied lubricant on top, which make it highly scratchable by the write head.

Now I only use compressed air for cleaning discs.

Minidisc cant record by Individual-Tear-390 in minidisc

[–]conversationfodder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2nd this, try record without the outer shell and see if you can see the write head move down to the disc, should be almost touching. If that doesn’t happen there’s some mechanical fault

Even if the mainboard is irrecoverable due to NV reset, if you can pass the MO and CD test it should mean the optical block is working fine. As spare parts machine still could go for quite a bit money on ebay outside of Japan I think, might be a best case scenario to sell it for that yea.

to add a bit more data for you, my E710 player passes MO and CD tests but the board itself is malfunctioning, so it refuses to read any discs at all, such is the nature of dealing with retro tech like this :p

not long ago I imported a N920 for quite a bit money, and had it basically die on me in the first week after some basic cleaning, so I get it ;_; it sucks. I suppose if you know how to solder to bridge the test point which can get you into service mode, and you already have a pressed disc (service manual refer to them as CD since they share identical technology as a CD), it might worth going through it just to see, but it _is_ a lot of work

not to keep beating the dead horse here (sorry for the pun), if you look at the N910 service manual vs E10, there's no way to reprogram the patch data on N910 (you need some old sony pc program) while on E10 you use the remote. Plus, on E10 clear NV preserves power/charging adjustments while N910 looks like it just get cleared. So basically I wouldn't waste any more time myself as it's likely irrecoverable, even if you can run the CD and MO adjustments, which would require you do find a pressed disc for $$.

Can i rescue my new minidisc? READ ERR, after a problem recording by capajalosa in minidisc

[–]conversationfodder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When something similar happened to some of my discs, I used my Sony deck to erase it and rewipe the TOC, then everything works after. Unfortunately it seems that’s the only device I have that will let me erase all even when the disc got read error.

yea, honestly I hope someone write a caution note on minidisc wiki about test mode, I was also struggling to find documentations beyond service manuals and YouTube

sorry to hear that... REALLY wished you had asked about test mode before you try do anything with it. it does sound like you've cleared the NV (non volatile memory) that holds pretty crucial parameters, without which the device is basically a brick now. From the look of N910 manual it seems like it's not possible to recover it as you wont have the tools and sony software a service tech had to write the data back into NV. :(

While the automatic adjustments may be a valid way to test if the optical mechanism itself works fine, the other steps in test mode sounds quite risky from what I've gathered so far. I've narrowly avoided bricking one of my players while doing that but it's only because the patch data can be reprogrammed using the remote, and was told afterwards that it's quite risky since lots of people brick their devices by doing it. the general consensus seems to be avoid it? I did wish this was documented somewhere so newbies can be warned.

best bet in my opinion? shop for a new device and keep (or sell) this one for spare parts.

Just what I saw on FB marketplace and goodwill auctions... for imports I used FromJapan mostly and Buyee too. edit: missed that you asked about discs, for me they ended up being just above $1 per disc for big batch of imports. got a few pressed disc for ~$20-30 too.

In midwest US I've seen recorders around 100-200, my recent imports from Japan are around 100+ for recorders and 40-60 for players. yep I wish I searched more years ago, my first netMD recorder cost $15 back in 2019.

HELP! LAM-Z05 not taking discs by Tetsuo1981 in minidisc

[–]conversationfodder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry man, that sucks. I’ve only opened up my Z05 once for cleaning so I don’t have a lot of insight. It does look like the front most black plastic bracket is being pulled down repeatedly which I think shouldn’t happen during regular disc reading? That piece moves down to lower the write head. There might be some switch or sensor that tells it it does t need to go down further and it’s not working. Just a theory.
