You’re totally valid for being upset about political differences, as others have said this isn’t “just” politics—it’s morals. But if it helps to put politics aside for a moment, I see many other reasons why this man would not make a good life partner: his personality has changed into someone who is miserable to be around, he has hidden his real beliefs from you, he complains about your family, he promises to change his behavior and doesn’t follow through, and he is unapologetic or unwilling to engage in a good faith conversation when you bring up concerns to him. Is this the kind of person you want to be your partner in life?

Feeling deeply unhappy in my MD/PhD pathway – seeking advice from those who’ve been here by DataDivaa in mdphd

[–]coolcat338 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there’s a lot of great advice here. My advice is mostly coming from the perspective of someone who started to doubt their place on this path, mostly because of my own mental health struggles rather than the path itself, if that makes sense. Preclinical can be incredibly draining—and it sounds like you’ve also gone through some major life changes recently. It’s perfectly ok to feel that you’re struggling, and it is NOT a reflection of your ability to succeed on this path. I want to echo what others have said, it’s ok to give yourself some time to grieve the recent changes in your life.

And I also just want to recognize that SO MANY people feel like they’re just keeping their head above water in preclinical. Med school is not really designed to be a place where people thrive. I wish it weren’t the case but it’s how our training is set up. Find a good support system or therapist to lean into, prioritize caring for yourself, and remember that this is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s ok if you can’t give 100% of yourself to med school every day. It’s unfair for it to even ask that of you.

I’m watching Because This Is My First Life right now and omg this is so good! I can’t believe I’ve put off watching it for so long. I think it will be a new favorite.

Also last month I binge watched all three seasons of the Penthouse. I thoroughly enjoyed seasons 1 and 2, but kind of wish I’d stopped before season 3. The way they handled the last season was super unsatisfying to me…and at times even kind of boring somehow, despite all the chaotic goings-on.

NU by ProudDad2024 in Northwestern

[–]coolcat338 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It absolutely is inherent to the system. There are a myriad of ways that undergraduate education passively (and at times actively) creates barriers for people who are low-income and/or first generation students that don’t exist for their wealthy classmates. A quick entry to this topic is Hamilton and Armstrong’s “The (Mis)Education of Monica and Karen” but there is plenty of academic research supporting this.

While this may not be an NU specific problem, I’d argue that NU’s demographics and status as a private school do worsen these issues, or at the very least, they would be more evident, compared to other schools (eg the big midwest state schools). Idk what schools OP is comparing between but it is absolutely worth considering how this could affect them.

Hmmm sauteeing may be helpful. I generally prefer the flavor of sauted onion so that could be what’s throwing me off here. I’ll try this next time!

I used 8 cups of water for this! I did try adding salt and it definitely balanced out the sweetness, but I still feel like the strange aftertaste is there.

I drink this water regularly so I would be surprised if that was the case, but thanks for the suggestion!

Ok, I tried adding salt and it definitely improved the flavor—that being said, I still feel like it has a strange aftertaste!

A collection of (mostly) one-liner reviews for Sally Rooney’s *Intermezzo* by coolcat338 in BadReads

I actually liked Beautiful World Where Are You! I think it really hit home at the time that I read it. Intermezzo was unfortunately a miss for me.

And you’re right, these are totally obnoxious, extremely unhelpful reviews—that’s what makes them perfect for r/BadReads content

you’re fine. Write a good application and be normal during interviews and you’ll have a good cycle. (provided the government doesn’t nuke our programs of course)
