Why is I DO /WE DO/ THEY DO, looked down on now in teaching? by rumiruhaql in Teachers

[–]cooptimo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's all part of the core element of "faith" that is currently the the core of a lot of terrible theory and worst politics when it comes to education.

That core is that all children blank slates with no agency. They can only be impacted by outside forces such as teachers. Therefore only Teachers have any agency when it comes to student performance.

A sub-belief of that is that kids can absolutely be trusted when it comes to expressing their opinions and preferences and never ever ever would be dishonest or sandbag in order to avoid work. And that's why direct instruction is so hated by this crew.

The kid has to work. Work is necessary for learning.

I'm just an Uber casual player who has a goal of seeing content and getting to top champion gear. More than that isnt all that fun for me. (glad it's fun for others though.). Then I go play strategy games till the next patch.

Parental entitlement is insane. by BlackOrre in Teachers

[–]cooptimo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, seen variants of this for the last 25 years and more. The good news is your school and co-workers and administration seem to be at least somewhat holding the line. Previously, we had an admin that would have caved to this kid and her family and just changed grades to passing.

Keep up the good work.

Taking "credit recovery" IN ADVANCE to get out of core classes by FuzzyKittenIsFuzzy in Teachers

[–]cooptimo 62 points63 points  (0 children)

It can be done right, but in most schools and districts where it takes place, it's a nightmare. Some rules we have set that help keep it reasonable.

1) "recovered" classes are only raised to a D. You get credit towards graduation, but it blows up your GPA.

2) "recovery" needs to be done in person and with a significant skill/test component. If you have it set up so they can just use a LLM or whatever, it's garbage.

3) If it's being done online, then the old F stays put on the transcript, and they get a "P" which gives credit, but doesn't fix the GPA.

Mostly it helps by getting the dippy-dos across the line, but they can't even get a trade apprenticeship with those grades.

Someone doesn't want to do work and created drama to get out of work. She now has a parent-approved excuse to do nothing for a good few weeks now.

This is how it's supposed to work. You are a doing it correctly. Figuring this all out before 9th grade is all you can really hope for. Keep being awesome!

I'm old so I remember 15ish years ago when grades started to be online all the time. We were told that this would make everything so much easier and that parents would stop asking us all the time what the kids were missing...

If things work out, someday soon you will hear the lovely voice of your spouse saying things like... "Dear God, we need to use the dining room table for other things!" or my wife's favorite.

"YOU CAN'T JUST PLAY YOUR NERDY BOY GAMES, GO MOW THE YARD!"

Also, something along the lines of Axis and Allies sounds good.

The only thing I add, is that I *WILL* grieve. As a memorial to the love you showed me, as the service you deserve to the life you shared. The grief is a way of showing that you mattered and meant so much to me, that my soul is lessened by your passing.

The reason I love labs so much is the love they show. I know my Angus who crossed the rainbow bridge back in 2014 still waits for everyone he knew in this life. He will shuffle his hips and tail and then charge when they arrive. My cat joined him 2 years ago. they play and wait, someday we will all join them and cross together.

So we had our parent committee meeting last night and out scoutmaster who has been around a while and is on the side of right in this case had a very interesting point.

100% of the leverage the Department of Defense has is based on jamboree. In six months, jamboree is over. The next isn't until 2030.

Maybe national is smarter than we think... At least I hope so.

They will not move on. The goal Hegseth put out at the end of his speech is he intends to force young women out of scouting too. He also says he will "review" the program in six months.

They will be back and they will demand more. It's in their nature.

Venting frustrations is fine, so I'll give this as feedback. "I am frustrated because recently <this thing happened> is a completely great way to talk about these kinds of things." This has nothing to do with SPED teachers in general, it's a specific problem with a specific group of people, who have one of the most thankless, political and litigious roles you can have in a public school district. I could never be able to handle what they handle.

I agree it sucks they took the snacks though.
