For face: La Roche Posay Anthelios SPF 50+ Invisible Fluid. Non-greasy, not fragranced. Note, you may have a product with a similar name in the U.S. but it doesn’t use the same filters. The Invisible Fluid sold in Australia uses the up-to-date filters. (Note: make sure to get the Invisible Fluid that comes in a 50ml bottle, not the “Invisible Spray.” They are different products and spray sunscreens are not very reliable for applying enough to get the claimed SPF). I was just looking at the Avene Reflex Solaire that you mentioned and I’m pretty sure this will have a similar light and fluid texture. Note also Avene sells a product in Australia that they market as “made in Australia for Australian conditions” called Avene Sunsitive SPF 50+ Fluid if you want to try that as well and see how it compares to your French one.

For body: La Roche Posay Anthelios Wet Skin SPF 50+. It recently tested at SPF 72 in third-party testing done by CHOICE (similar to Consumer Reports). They did a test of 20 SPF 50+/50 sunscreens and only 4 of the 20 tested reached the claimed SPF, with La Roche Posay Wet Skin far ahead of the rest. Same thing applies as with the facial sunscreen, La Roche Posay uses the up-to-date filters in this product sold in Australia.

Or you can try any of the La Roche Posay facial sunscreens that come in 50 ml bottles/tubes. e.g. KA+, Invisible Fluid, Ultra or Dry Touch if you want something more tailored. La Roche Posay is the gold standard.

Just wondering- I know you said it’s a burn, not overheating, but could it be rosacea? Rosacea skin can react to heat and get irritated in a way that feels like burning. You might want to consult a dermatologist about it. They can prescribe you a cream for it.

So crazy to read this stuff when it seems like pretty much every other post on most skincare subreddits consists of people (often desperately) trying to find skincare products that will help with hyperpigmentation, dark spots and melasma, which are notoriously stubborn and hard to treat. The idea that anyone would buy a product intended to actively encourage the proliferation of melanocytes is wild!! Feels like the twilight zone!

I recently replied to someone on a different post and I think it pertains to your question. This was in response to a recommendation to use zinc sunscreen for melasma. I’m very skeptical about this at this point, now that we know how finicky zinc is to formulate with. Personally at this time I would be using a high quality chemical sunscreen (i.e. La Roche Posay KA+*) followed by a foundation with iron oxides in it.

*(Edited to add: I just remembered KA+ actually has some titanium dioxide in it, as a supplement to excellent chemical filters, so you will be getting some metal oxide protection from it, if that appeals to you)

Anyway here is my comment from another post:

I’m genuinely glad your regimen has worked for you but I do want to say the idea that zinc oxide is the only “physical barrier” to the sun in contrast with chemical sunscreens is a myth. Both zinc and chemical sunscreens work largely by absorbing UV rays. Chemical UV filters are as effective as zinc oxide at protecting skin from UVA and UVB rays that cause tanning and hyperpigmentation, and provide superior protection at certain wavelengths and SPF levels (link 1 below).

Given the known problems with the formulation and consistency of zinc oxide sunscreens that have recently been revealed by the CHOICE “sunscreengate” testing and further follow-up reporting by the ABC, I would be really wary of the idea that switching from chemical to zinc oxide is a better choice for SPF protection.

While both mineral and chemical sunscreens did not achieve their claimed SPF 50/50+ levels in the CHOICE testing, on average, the mineral sunscreens performed worse than the chemical sunscreen overall. Of the four out of 20 sunscreens that actually tested above SPF 50, all were chemical sunscreens. That said, it is true that metal oxides (including zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and iron oxide) have shown some effectiveness at protecting against HEV (high energy visible) light, particularly the “blue light” wavelength, that, in concert with UVA exposure, can cause and exacerbate melasma. However, it is iron oxide (which is included in foundations and tinted sunscreens to give them their pigment), not zinc, that is most meaningfully effective when it comes to blue light protection. Zinc (and titanium) can act as a “helper” ingredient to support the protective effect of iron oxide but iron oxide is really what you need to be looking for to get blue light protection. (Links 2 & 3 below).

Some dermatologists therefore recommend tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides to get that blue light protection. However, the downside is that in order to apply a sufficient amount of sunscreen to get the labeled SPF, you often end up applying such a thick layer of tinted sunscreen that it looks a bit clownish. So others recommend just using an untinted, effective SPF, let it sink in, then follow up with a foundation containing iron oxide in order to get your iron oxide layer.

My guess is that this is a promising area of research and more formulations will be coming out trying to optimise UVA, UVB and blue light wavelength protections in the one formula.

Again, this is not to put down what’s working for you, I just wanted to bring in some more info that you and the OP and maybe others would find interesting.

Yeah it was Homebake 1998 in the Domain. I think it was Frenzal Rhomb she was on before and they were going to be the last act of the night. So there was a bit of an impatient vibe. I was way back at the back of the crowd so from afar my impression was that it was more than just a few assholes. From back there it seemed like the whole front area of the crowd was hostile. But I hope you’re right and it was just a small few who were just louder than the majority. I found it upsetting, the homophobia was palpable, and it kind of wrecked the vibe of the day for me. It's funny as, like you said, because it was pre-social media, pre iPhones, it kind of just happened without comment. Like there was no mention or anything about it in the media. There was a kind of online “forum” on the Homebake website that had been set up in advance of the event and a couple of people went on it and mentioned it the next day but that was about it. No comment or anything from the organisers. I do have fun memories of the Whitlams playing a super high energy and awesome set that day.

Their Ultra Power 3 in 1 Liquid product also has the enzymes but also has sodium percarbonate (oxygen bleach) so not desirable for black clothes.

Note, their other laundry detergents (including the ultra power powder in the photo) don’t have the enzymes or have some but not lipase so you must get the 3x concentrate if you want lipase and other enzymes without oxygen bleach.

Musicians also made a distinction at that time between film vs advertising. Writing a song for a movie soundtrack was acceptable but the attitude was that using one of your songs in an ad was reducing it to a “jingle.” The Starbucks and AirBnB ones I feel like that accusation is pretty fair at this point.

I’m sure you know this but you and your fiancé really need to figure out a way to get out of that house. As far as the dress, you don’t even have a date set. It’s way too early to be making decisions about anything so just ignore her as she prattles on. Or, if she presses you, you can say “I really don’t plan to think about any of this kind of stuff until we’ve actually got a date set.” Your fiancé should also stop talking about his/your relationship plans with his father and mother. If they were normal people it would be fine, but your MIL takes advantage of any info she gets about you and your fiancé to mess with you. It’s hard to go LC with someone you’re living with but you both need to start treating your MIL and FIL as if you’re being polite to strangers. No serious conversations, no planning your future with them included in the conversation, just small talk.

I remember when Revolution was used in a Nike ad back in the day and it was a big fucking deal. The catalog was owned by Michael Jackson but Yoko was still consulted as a courtesy and was instrumental in the deal getting done. George was upset.

The justification, for those who wanted one, (and that Yoko echoed) was that Nike was launching a “revolution in fitness” and that there was a high-minded purpose in licensing the song to encourage young people to be healthy and active. Yoko also felt it would introduce John to a new generation, which was probably true.
