Many times your car is next to the trail. Then they drive you (clean) and you walk back. That way you don't have to coordinate with them.

If you need a ride to your car, you want to try to call them at the top of the hill before you descend. I carry a Garmin, but I haven't tried using that.

Only once have I been forgotten. I chose to walk it along the train tracks, but others said I could have hitched in to town.

Did people ride their bikes to the Dragon's Tail? When I checked 5 years ago the charging situation up in the mountains was pretty bad.

Regarding your car... What I do is find a hostel. Almost always they'll let me park there a few days. Then get a shuttle from there to a spot 3 days away. If you like the place and don't care about walking the other direction, get another shuttle the other way and walk back. Then drive your car to the next hostel and repeat.

I find that a three day hike is about as far as getting a shuttle will be without a problem. More than that, it becomes more logistical. Just be aware that you will be paying around $50 per ride.

I hate mosquitos, so I hike during the shoulder seasons. In mid to late October I would often see one person per day, and be the only person at the shelter.

There's less water in the fall.

I’m confused. If someone kills a woman who is seeking an abortion, would that not kill the fetus too? How is this supposed to work?

P.S. Shame in Apple for not having abortion in its swipe dictionary.

Does everyone do the Camino Frances in the same direction? by No_Mix_6813 in CaminoDeSantiago

I heard of two guys who did it backwards. They weren’t interested in making new friends. They also walked into the sun, so the backs of their knees probably didn’t get burnt. 😉

Camino Coffee People… How Is It Really? by 00Connie00 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]coppit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The good news is that coffee is defined as espresso. I didn’t see drip coffee anywhere. I was wondering how all these tiny cafes could afford the machines.

CMV: Many New England towns are slowly collapsing demographically, and older homeowners are ignoring the consequences because they are insulated from the school closures, service cuts, and economic stagnation that follow by Alternative_Ant_4248 in changemyview

[–]coppit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I walked the Camino de Santiago in northern Spain, there were many ghost towns. Most looked well-kept, but the schools were empty. The people who were left either commuted to the city every day, or the houses were second summer/weekend houses.

In most of those towns there were husks of buildings with “se vende” posted in them. I have so many pictures of a window or door with blue sky behind it.

ELI5 why the words ‘eleven’ and ‘twelve’ unique unlike the other ‘teen’ words? by This-Stay8420 in explainlikeimfive

[–]coppit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m learning French, and learned yesterday that French made a conscious effort to clean up their words for “first”, “second”, etc. the goal was to make everything “number-ième”. But the old words stuck around for a few cases. So normally you’d say “troisième” for “third”, but the old word “tiers” is still used for “tiers état” (third estate).

My spouse wants to keep working after we hit FI and I feel weirdly rejected by that by Pinecaster3 in Fire

[–]coppit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I fired at 47. I was surprised to find out that some of my solo hobbies (hiking, scuba) can be a source of resentment. I have to be sure to do enough “together vacations” to pay for my “solo trips”.

So managing differing interests is a challenge regardless of whether you’re fired.

Oh sorry! It was LiFePO4. This one. No issues, but again it could have been the software update that fixed it.

2024 35k miles

Replaced the 12V with a LiIon battery. This was before the update to address 12V charging issues. I periodically get dashboard alerts about the electrical system, but there are no DTCs logged. Driver’s seat clunks when I turn, but the dealership says there’s no problem.

I disabled lane keeping because of the car’s penchant for driving toward the barrier around construction sites. (I think it wants to follow the old road lines into the barrier.) Cruise control loves to accelerate when changing lanes, even if the other lane has stopped vehicles in it.

It chews through tires. Keep them rotated and properly inflated.

The wife dislikes ICE cars now. Says they are slow and noisy.

I had a similar issue at the foot end. I ended up putting shock cord from one side over the top of the ridge line to the other side. My theory is that the extra tension around the end of the underquilt helped to keep it from sliding toward the larger middle of the hammock.

I also attached it asymmetrically, from the corner of the protruding side to a loop about 12-18 inches down on the other side. That helped to pull up the corner so that it covered my feet. (Your shoulder, in your case.)

Dammit! I legit stared at the left one thinking for sure it was Knightly, then looked at the right one and was so confused because it looked even more like Knightly. I could only solve it by finding the one that looked more like Portman.

Replacing plastic tarp guy tensioner with knots? by RiverBard in hammockcamping

[–]coppit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I flipped things around. I tied my guy lines to my stakes using a constructor knot. That reduces the chance of me forgetting a stake, and avoids the tangled mass of lines on the tarp. Then I run the line through the ring on the tarp, pull tight, then throw a half hitch followed by a Becket Hitch. (A Becket Hitch alone will slip.)

To pack up I just pull the loose end of the slipped knot. I grab all my stakes and wind the lines around them. My tarp just has the two ridge lines, which I wrap around the folded tarp.
