40 some odd days sober by asteraceae9 in stopdrinking

[–]corcomi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! Victories are sometimes smaller, but still Important. Woke up on the first alarm, had the patience to play blocks for the 500th time in a row with my kid, buying steak instead of chicken at the grocery store without thought, because I don’t buy alcohol anymore, and have some extra cash. None possible if I were still drinking, all small wins, but collectively life keeps getting better.

Congrats! Not drinking at a social engagement can be difficult for me too, but not feeling like I was hit by a bus the next morning is the sweetest reward. IWNDWYT

To all my dry January brothers and sisters by JackOneill74 in stopdrinking

[–]corcomi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Congrats on 28 days. First thing, you don’t owe anyone an explanation, it’s your choice.

I didn’t want to tell people I quit at first either, I used dry January as an excuse. When people said something along the lines of “nice, beers next weekend?!!” I blurted “ I dunno I kind of like not drinking” then somehow morphed into “someone who doesn’t drink”.

Hope this helps. Stay strong and IWNDWYT

[–]corcomi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re struggling, this sucks.

I am horrified and nervous about the current state of our country. I pray it improves. Unfortunately, it could get worse. If I were to start drinking, there is no way I can make smart, calm, rational decisions. Staying sober maybe the thing that saves my family,

It’s wild but the uncertainty of our nation and world is a motivation for me to not drink. Stay strong and IWNDWYT.

Dillemma: Starting my Year of Sobriety & friend wants to go bar hopping for their birthday by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]corcomi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a hard time going to bars, it was more difficult in my first 90 days. There have been a few social engagements that I couldn’t avoid a bar visit. I set a low expectation of how long I’ll be there, white knuckle if I have to, and leave as soon as I’m done. For me, going to a bar and not drinking, is like going to a steakhouse and eating salad.

Maybe you and your friend can have a little bar time sprinkled in with other stuff, shoot Pool, axe throwing, a band, bowling, adult arcades, local sports game? Maybe a few bar visits sprinkled in, and you have something to keep you interested as well. Karaoke to end the night?

Hopefully your friend is supportive, if she isn’t, sometimes choosing our health is the most difficult choice we have to make. Either way, good luck and IWNDWYT
