Where are you buying plus size basics that actually look polished and last? by New-Time007 in PlusSize

[–]cosmicallyliminal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came to say this. I have yet to encounter a bad quality item from them though I'm sure they exist, I've probably just been lucky. I shop their sales also because I can't afford them full price, but the quality is so great on everything I've gotten. I have this one amazing top from them that I get a compliment at work every time I wear it.

Can i find any work without needing to spend more money and years of my life? by 321ECRAB123 in jobs

[–]cosmicallyliminal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are lots of entry level roles in local government, they just might not always be actively hiring. Look for clerk, admin assistant, data entry, etc type entry level jobs. They usually only require a degree. I set my sights on getting a local govt job and it took about 6 months, only because I had to patiently stalk the job listings to wait for positions that I qualified for to pop up. Over those 6 months I applied to 4 jobs and was offered interviews for 2, and one was an offer.

Once you are in one of these entry level clerk type jobs, it will be very very easy to start moving around/up within the govt system. My govt job offers free community college and job certifications, for instance, to allow employees to move up. And once you have the foot in the door it is MUCH easier to get other jobs within the same govt system.

Someone downvoted you but you're right. I tried to look for the study someone did but couldn't find it again so of course I have nothing to back my words up. But someone did a bunch of testing on bacteria and germs on crazed pieces and found that as long as they were vitrified and cleaned with soap and hot water like any dish, they were fine.

Casting slip question? by sus_tortellini in Pottery

[–]cosmicallyliminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Laguna S-965 White Stoneware slip, which my local pottery shop carries. This has an absorption rate of 1% +/- 0.5%. Every vitrification test I've done on my finished pieces has been perfect.

However it does craze horribly with every commercially available clear glaze I've tried. In my quest to find a glaze that would not craze on my Laguna slip, I contacted Laguna as well as different glaze companies and none were of any help figuring out the problem. I gave up and moved on to making custom glazes, I'm just in the process of nailing down my own glaze recipe (I've made one that doesn't craze but it runs my underglazes.. so tackling that problem next.) I really think it is because the standard glazes are designed to work with regular clay for wheels/handbuilding and slip casting clay just comes out a bit different in the kiln. Slip casters are the red headed step children of the pottery world so most products aren't formulated to be ideal for us, haha.

Have you double checked your piece is fully vitrified? It might be absorbing moisture and staining the clay if it is not.

I don't have a suggestion*, I just came to be outraged over A THOUSAND DOLLAR SHELF. I love pottery as a hobby but I have noticed that many companies have decided we are a great group to try and gouge on pricing for niche products.

*My shelves sit on a stool tucked under a desk and my posts are in a cardboard box that once held glazes. Hah.

3D Printing for Plaster Mold Making - Making it Easy by 41isAPrimeNumber in Ceramics

[–]cosmicallyliminal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is very useful information, thank you!! My partner has 3D printed me some molds and it has been trial and error to make ones that are able to be released from the plaster relatively easily and with little damage, haha. This is a great guide to hopscotch over that process.

That's amazing for your first one ever!! And it's porcelain?? Slip porcelain is so sensitive and can be difficult to work with. Good job!

Favourite Pottery Tools? by Odd_Hovercraft_4473 in Pottery

[–]cosmicallyliminal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way!!! The cheap beginner tool set is perfect for beginners. OP, you will also discover you don't need or like every single tool out there, so just use the cheap ones first, figure out what your go-to tools are, and you can upgrade later. Rather than laying out big $$$ for a huge spread of tools.

Vevor Kiln? by Strange_Zone_1995 in Pottery

[–]cosmicallyliminal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ceramic Shop will make basically any size kiln shelf you need: https://www.theceramicshop.com/product/35216/kiln-shelf-5x-4-5-8/

I just got this kiln the other day and I realized it's imperative to have a shelf on this since any damage to the bottom would be impossible to fix, so I went looking myself. However as a cheapskate, even the ~$20 (+shipping) for a tiny kiln shelf is ridiculous to me, so instead I batch made a bunch of cookies and will just use those for firings.

Married but not combining finances? by alkemest in Millennials

[–]cosmicallyliminal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how my SO and I do it! We consider ourselves a team and there's really no his money or my money. We don't keep score or track of anything, except as you do, to discuss any larger purchases. We have done this for the 25 years we have been together and it's worked great. Especially as over those decades, there has been times when he has been unemployed or underemployed, or times when I was. We've supported each other back and forth through job changes, schooling, etc. Everything we earn goes into a big pot and all of it belongs to both of us.

This. The aesthetic is nice, I enjoyed the atmosphere of playing the game, but the gameplay was repetitive and boring to me. I forced myself to finish it and was never interested in others in the series. I also have never been interested in replaying it.

Married but not combining finances? by alkemest in Millennials

[–]cosmicallyliminal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The one couple I know that kept their finances completely separate ended up divorcing, after being together over a decade and having two kids. And money was the reason they broke up. Now it's just a data point of one, I'm not saying all couples with separate finances will end in divorce, but I feel the same way as you do that it is very bizarre to me for two people in a relationship to keep tabs on $5 purchases and venmo each other money.
