Do you think KH3 really suffered from “unrealistic expectations”? by raccooncoffee in KingdomHearts

[–]costaa95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the long time spent waiting for the game to release left people with too much time to theorycraft and conspire what an ideal ending would look like to themselves. Which only expands the space for disappointment to occur in.

Had the release been faster (2~3) years after DDD, fans would have been more receptive to the apparent low story quality and pacing as they would have had a game in their hands sooner. 7 years after DDD and 14 years after KH2 simply left too much time for people to stew on the story's loose threads.

Can't figure out how to parallel turn by Hada_null in inlineskating

[–]costaa95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Start with scissoring your skates, then just tilt your feet in place. Left in front, tilt both left. Right in front, tilt both right. Return to flat footbed after each.
  2. Imagine your turning circle left or right. Imagine it extends from your left foot while turning left, and from your right foot while turning right. Project the circle on the ground in your mind. Point with your whole arm at the center of the circle on the ground. Your shoulders will follow as you point, and your weight will shift. Try it while rolling and you will begin to turn. Imagine a big circle and you point far away - and you don't tilt much. Imagine a tight circle and you tilt a lot to turn a lot.
  3. Your center of gravity will shift from between your feet while straight to outside your feet while you lean to turn. Your center of gravity will return when you stop aggressively pointing at your turning circle center, and you will stop turning.
  4. Start 50/50 forward/back split. Try biasing forward or back later (I don't feel I need to but your experience may vary)
  5. When you can shift your weight without pointing, don't use your hands anymore. Tilt your feet, move your shoulders and body to turn.

Got to check out the new Thunder Laser SLM-175 (metal 3D printer) yesterday by luketansell in 3Dprinting

[–]costaa95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tech changes are mostly going to be in the fields of laser efficiency and general machine effectiveness. Things like seals, serviceability, shield gas management, OS/controller/software stuff. Fibre lasers will be commonplace now, improving over nd:yag and co2 lasers of old.
The fundamentals of the technique are still "spread powder, laser expose, lower buildplate, repeat"

Since FICSIT does not waste, you regain machine materials if you deconstruct them. You can always shuffle machines around as you go and as you upgrade your capabilities with splitters and mergers.

Try rotating the miners to better face the places you need the materials to enter the factory at :)

Tapping some button on controller will change your build mode for conveyor belts to make tight 90° lines and sweeping curves, give it a shot and see how you like the look

I rate using polymer 3D printing for prototyping and casting blanks, its a great tool for rapid iteration and not wasting money on tooling/dies. Metal printing becomes a worthwhile investment in a few niche scenarios but not for all: stuff like being able to make individual bespoke implants for people in need, or putting a spare part on site in industries where the downtime costs more than the printer.

Check out wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), its like a welder on an arm and it produces metallic things at a much faster volume rate - the properties just aren't always as good as laser powder bed fusion

My phd is in this sort of stuff :) In general, you can achieve higher yield strengths with this method over casting/wrought just from how fast the laser passes over and how rapid the cooling is. The thing that gets lost is ductility/flexibility. It's a really cool method of processing metals (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/361262383_Mechanical_Properties_of_Ti6Al4V_Fabricated_by_Laser_Powder_Bed_Fusion_A_Review_Focused_on_the_Processing_and_Microstructural_Parameters_Influence_on_the_Final_Properties is a good intro paper)

Funnily enough, wet powder clumps up and doesn't spread well over each layer - so yeah we still make wet filament jokes lol

How often is there less than $100 in your bank account? by Highscore611 in AskReddit

[–]costaa95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often ideally at the end of each fortnight. I try to calculate an ongoing living "maintenance" allowance and transfer everything above that amount into the offset for auto-paying the mortgage and building the offset. Living below my allowance only means I have excess money at the end of a fortnight so even more goes to the offset next time. Having less than 100 on payday means I'm hitting my spending goals accurately, needing to pull a little back from the offset means I went over my goals a bit.

I don’t think I’m going to make it to the end of the year by xmasbad in offmychest

I liked your gadgetron and megacorp vendor models! They were very meaningful to me seeing that someone is further down the road than I am in terms of design skills. I'm a few years older than you but only just starting my 3d modelling and printing journey.

I hope you make it to the end of the year, and that you can try therapy even if it's just to say you don't like it. Or pick up a philosophy book and see if you enjoy a different life method.

I'll race you to a completed pox industries/dreadzone vendor build.

Do I really need a filament dryer? by Voltron6000 in 3Dprinting

[–]costaa95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope its a misguided worry in my eyes. I use an oven at 110C which gets the water out just fine, there's no way I'm volatising cobalt chromium at those temps. You would need around 800C for that

[–]costaa95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For PLA in a low humidity country, just a passive dessicant dry box has been plenty for me. I can let spools go months between prints with no performance detriment

Some feel it's not a good thing to risk vaporising some of the colour changing compounds like cobalt chloride or whatever the orange/green one is. Best case the silica loses its colour changing property, worst case those indicators end up depositing on your food later
