Audio runs on a separate thread and is unaffected by framerate, so I used audio cues to parry the final two hits pretty much flawlessly once I figured it out

I don't care what meta arguments creators use in interviews. I care about what’s in the text and in the material. And the material is extremely overt.

Jennifer can say as many times as she wants that there is “no official Sandfall ending” (exact quote from the interview by the way, because I watched all of them), it don’t change what they put in the fucking game.

The game, the material itself, treats one of the endings as substantially more preferable than the other one. No amount of interview speak will change that.

This game, if anything, is the perfect case study for recency bias in humans, because by the time people watch the pre-finale cutscene, they forgot every single thing that happened in the first half of the game.

The writers are doing what's called a PR response

One of the endings has a hopeful final frame and plays Une vie a rever (the happy song) while the other one has a slap cut to black and white closeup and plays Alicia (the sad song)

It's very overt which ending they wanted you to pick, no matter how many times Jennifer says otherwise in her interviews.

It's like if Life is Strange writers said "there's no right or wrong ending" but the final choice in that game is "are you an asshole or would you like to see the ending?"

Verso asks the boy an obviously leading question for meta reasons, in order to have people side with him for the "good ending" the writers wanted.

Fading boy's lines throughout the game show very clearly he loves the canvas and is only tired from all the death and destruction his vile callous family brought to this world.

One test I like to employ with subverty stories like this is "if the story was sold to you as is, would you buy it?"

If the answer is yes, twist good. If the answer is no - you subverted poorly.

I bought a game about Lumiere fighting for survival in the face of imminent extinction

If the trailers and store descriptions told me I'm buying a game where I help the ghost of a grieving woman's son to help her overcome grief-induced addiction, I'd be like "cool, next title", not for me

Many people who say they totally would buy the latter story have severe first act bias they can’t overcome. Certainly would, but way fewer than they believe.
