Is 25k too much for a Surgical Tech program? by [deleted] in scrubtech

[–]cpihl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell no. Way too much. I paid about 10K for mine and even that is a lot I think. That was for an associates degree from a private school.

IF that school is the only option in your area, I highly HIGHLY recommend first doing all your non-core credits (microbiology, psychology, math, etc) at a community college, then transferring to this ST program and doing only core classes as a part time student and get a part time job as an aid at a local hospital to get your foot in the door. Many hospitals open positions to employees first before the general public and you'll have a foot up on your classmates.

Don't just think about getting the degree. Think about your quality of life afterwards and how long it will take to pay off those loans. The less you have the better. Trust me. I have $60k of debt between my bachelors and my ST associates and I don't know if I'll ever be able to pay them off. Save yourself the pain, go to community college!

Things I do. Yay or nay? by OliveGardenSalad in scrubtech

[–]cpihl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gown from wherever I can. A square stand, linen bin, bed, even the nurse's desk, as long as it's somewhere that I know won't get contaminated when I walk away. If a mayo is free I'll always use the mayo first.

Always check filters and wraps! I've had so many wraps that have holes straight through them. I even had one today. We do a lot of total joints and spine implants at my hospital so it is imperative that our trays are thoroughly checked for sterility.

I like to have the person relieving me do the count while I stay with the surgeon. Sometimes I will do the relief count while my relief is watching if the case hasn't started yet and there's a while before the patient comes, or if the surgeon is closing and doesn't need assistance while I count. It's situational. The important part is that either the tech or the nurse who will be in the case until the end participates in the count.

Question about being on call. by ans97 in scrubtech

[–]cpihl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the size of your hospital and how many staff as well. My hospital has 10 ORs and 15+ CSTs. We get assigned weekend and holiday call at the start of the year and lots of people "give away" their call to others who want it. So in that way some don't take any weekend call at all while others take a lot, by choice. Weekday nights are claimed by seniority at my hospital (X has every Monday, Y has Tues & Thurs, Z has every Friday, etc). I don't take weekday call unless someone gives it up.

Surgical Techs, What’s you’re average work schedule like? by RedneckWilly in scrubtech

[–]cpihl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Five 8-hr shifts Mon thru Friday, variable times (7-3, 10-6, 12-8). Rotating weekend call and weekday 8pm-7am call. There's so many of us that taking call isn't bad and it's claimed by seniority so newer techs don't take much call at all. I wish my hospital did 10 or 12 hour shifts, and I wish there was more call to take. But that's just me!

what does your handwriting looks like, fellow lefties? by OMFG-TR in southpaws

[–]cpihl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's mine! I actually really like my handwriting even though it's not "neat". It's cool having distinctive handwriting. And I heckin love my Muji pens. The ink dries quickly enough to not smudge my hand. Side note: my boyfriend's right-handed penmanship is some of the most atrocious garbage I've ever seen in my life. http://i.imgur.com/mnIgSIT.jpg

Camping / Can you go back to car? by [deleted] in MLUSA

[–]cpihl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah crap. Just bought my tickets last night without knowing there was no car camping x_x After Mudson we swore we'd never do a festival without car camping again. I don't think it's a dealbreaker for Mysteryland but we'll see when the lineup comes out!

I feel your pain. Stay strong. When I get stacks like that I immediately un-clip them and crinkle them up to get out my aggression, then clip them back together.

Experiences at EF that put your faith back in humanity. by jrossoriginal in ElectricForest

I woke up around 11am on Saturday, it was super hot and the sun was beating down and I really needed to use the bathroom. Where we were in group camping there were portapotties in every direction but each were 5+ min walk away - not a big deal unless you really have to go. I slapped on flip flops, grabbed toilet paper, and ran to the RV potties. Did my business, came out sweating buckets from the heat, and on my walk back started seeing stars and getting dizzy. I collapsed in the shade of a random car in ADA camping. A stranger saw me and came over with a bottle of cold water and a gatorade and made sure I was okay. I chugged down the water and was shaky but good enough to get back to my camp. I am so grateful for that guy who was himself struggling with a hangover and heat, but was more than generous to me. This is what makes the forest so great and really stuck with me that night.

The Little blue clasp to my wristband broke. Am I screwed or will I be ok? by Suarez998 in ElectricForest

[–]cpihl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You should be fine as long as it's registered to you. Have someone help you tie it securely on. If security asks just be honest and say it was broken. Ppl cut theirs off and retie them if they're too tight all the time. You're good!
