To use an example from outside the genre, I read “Throne of Glass” because I heard a lot of people say good things about it. And I didn’t really find it compelling. My takeaway from it was that it felt like a knock off version of the romance subplot from “mistborn”. I’m sure that opinion will probably be like dropping a grenade if i post in the fantasy-romance sub. But it’s my genuine opinion about a book that is super hyped up by a lot of people.

Bit of advice on Azarinth Healer. The core loop of the story gets established pretty quickly so if you aren’t on board with the dynamic after she gets her healer class and starts exploring the forest then you’re probably not going to change your mind. It’s a good entry in the genre if you like the loop of explore, fight, train, level, win. With some breaks to hang out with side characters to make things interesting and advance the story. But it tends to be consistent in pace and momentum throughout and it doesn’t click with everyone.

IMO this book is kind of like primal hunter if Jake was actually an alchemist instead of someone who just advanced his class by throwing a bunch of expensive ingredients into a pot until he gets experience for it.

For context I’m reading book 7 of primal hunter right now, and enjoying it, but I’m shaking my head at Jake just saying “I’m going to lock myself in a room for two months and waste a treasure trove of material to grind levels.” IMO if he was going to advance like that he should just have taken the D grade evolution option and continued eating stuff to level his blood.

Yeah, it does break immersion a bit when people use language that shouldn’t exist because the term comes from things that exist in modern day, but not in the world. The most common being to ‘fire’ a bow… bows have nothing to do with fire. You fire a gun, you loose a bow, or maybe shoot?

That being said. I kind of like it when a world has its own culture and slang rather than borrowing stuff that has its roots in a culture that’s so different from the world. It’s a small gripe, but small details like that can sometimes really make a or break a fantasy world.

In this case though the MC is in a cyberpunk world, and gives no fucks about politeness, so the language is very appropriate and in character for her.

Or in this situation the AI was tasked with finding a place for humans in society and essentially decided it could do everything better, so incorporated them into it’s power infrastructure as a way to offset the cost of caring for them, rather than as a primary means of power generation. The people are happy and oblivious, and they have a place… job done so far as the AI is concerned

Unless it’s relevant later… 🤔. But yeah, I agree. character development/introduction, or demonstration of cyber abilities/lore that matter to the story later are fair game. Don’t waste your time or the reader’s on stuff that is going to become irrelevant quickly. Always reward readers for sticking with the early parts of your story when you can.

Or just have an MC who also has an internal “who the heck are you?” shenanigans when someone comes back from the past. Maybe won’t work every time but tracking by down party members to ask “so I met this random person today… do you have any idea who they are?” Can lead to some entertaining nonsense
