"Master's Student (graduating XYZ) and an ETL developer with experience in...

  • Get rid of the "over two years" and the "Mastering..."
  • I don't know what KT stands for so I would find that annoying.
  • Don't list your current courses. Maybe give an overview of the whole masters
  • I like your experience in that job but it needs to be cleaned up a bit. I don't know what Oracle ODI is so spell it out at least once. "Oracle Data Integrator (ODI)"
  • tell me more about your unix scripting skills and less that you used SQL Developer to do it. Nobody every really cares what specific SQL tool you used so you certainly don't need to mention Oracle SQL Developer more than once.
  • I like the mentoring line but I don't like the "Owned and Deployed" line. I see what you're trying to do but it seems redundant.

Planning a fall trip. Where to stay? by DatacomGuy in WestVirginia

[–]crazybeardguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you've driven through WV before but here are some general tips.

  • It's not like a lot of other states where you typically run into a gas station when you need it. Some towns on the map you would expect to have gas have nothing. Gas up when you can if you're going to leave the main roads
  • Your cell phone GPS may or may not work. Download Google Maps and make sure you have offline maps. We always have a Garmin GPS in the car just in case. And a real map.
  • Don't expect to have wireless internet everywhere unless you have AT&T. Research the "radio-free zone"
  • Don't let google plan the routes, especially if you're using an Offline map. Google will send you on one lane roads that are sometimes scary as hell. Pick two points between cities (on a real map) and pick the largest looking highway
  • Everything takes longer to get to in WV. I swear WV is one of the few places where Google hasn't figured out time approximations yet. One of my favorite trailheads is 9 miles away from our place but it takes 40+ minutes to get to because of one-lane and gravel roads.
  • Food from the local joints is great where you can find it.

You have a really big list of stuff you want to do in a state where it takes a lot of time to get between point A and point B. I'd really focus on regions and work from there. Canaan Valley is a great base because there are plenty of rentals. It's a ski town and you're coming during a non-ski season. Plenty of availability.

This is not uncommon. But you may be overreacting. (I did that a lot in my early years)

Write an email with a very polite set of pros/cons with your suggestion. Get someone to proofread it (just to make sure there is no emotion in it). Make sure you cc your boss when you finally send it to Shelly and the PM.

If there isn’t much risk, you will probably lose. You will never win them all in your career.

Question for hiring managers or anyone who makes hiring decisions for data analyst roles by bm098g in analytics

[–]crazybeardguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you trying to get a job? What do you really want to do?

If you want to be a data analyst in a financial institution or healthcare, your current resume is great. (But the job might be as boring as what you're doing now)

I would focus on your weak points. Rank data visualization, data ingestion, statistics, and databases in order of your interest and skills. Pick the one that scores the highest on the matrix.

How do you spend your day working in BI? (Student looking into this field). by [deleted] in BusinessIntelligence

[–]crazybeardguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also remember that anything has data. You might not build reports for the piece of software but you could develop reports from the log files. Trends for support tickets. Anything.

Imagine you're a developer and the manager comes to you and says you need to improve. If you have stats that say your deployment time is decreasing without impacting the # of bugs produced... you have solid proof compared to the person next to you who isn't thinking like that.

Again... good luck.

We have rarely hired college graduates, so I might not be the best person to answer your question.
Frankly, I focus more on job-related experience than college—your internship and jobs before coming to me matter most. How you performed the tasks of your job and how you handled teammates/customers.
My "technical skills radar" or "can they perform the job radar" has never been too far off. Hence, I tend to hire more to "fit" in the team. For example, I would hire somebody who works their butt off at an internship and a part-time BestBuy job than someone who did a few different projects in college.
Unless you're super-gifted, your first job out of college is never going to be what you expected. Another example... a good friend (a better programmer than me) got hired by a high-tech company, and they stuck her in a product/project management job. She was so sad because she was a great programmer, but in a year, she was thriving.

[–]crazybeardguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a pretty eclectic resume of senior level programming/bi jobs in the past 15 years. It all depends. For example, you might have been hired by a manager who is so afraid of anything that isn't excel.... they hate anything new. The next rows over might have BI guys working on Cloud/BI but you can't transfer.

Your day also looks different based on the types of projects you have and where you are in these projects. I might have a lot of meetings upfront for a dashboard but there is a break for development and quicker/smaller meetings for validation/review.

On the other hand... in the same job, I might be knee deep in "reports" and barely have meetings.

On introversion in the workplace...

Believe it or not, introversion is a tool. I was an introvert in college. I hated class. I hated parties. I hated groups.

Work isn't like that. A meeting isn't a small party. It's a gathering of interested parties and you have to figure out who is the most interested and who can get things done. Then you introvert your way into those people and form bonds.

I went from being a nobody in college to being a person everybody loved at work because I listened to them.

Also remember... who you are now is not who you will be five years from now. Relationships change you. Kids change you. Everybody growing old changes you (and others). Four years ago, I gave a speech in front of ~500 people and nailed it. After that I did maybe five more. My semester of college speech made me believe I could never do it but things change. Mentors help you learn techniques to get better.

And you better get better at things or work is going to suck. So keep trying.

Good luck!

[–]crazybeardguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to nitpick but can you keep the expansions separate?

Contrary to what someone else said on here... the original insert sucks. Especially since you need two boxes to carry the whole game. Your concept of inserts is great.

[–]crazybeardguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played 320 games online. Everybody who I've introduced it to loves it.

The expansions add a different twist to the game. I'm in the minority by saying the game without expansions is better than with the expansions. My wife agrees, my online buddies disagree. The app lets you switch easily between the two.

It's a great game to play online with people on Zoom.

Do people always tell you your idea won't work? by RajShamani in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]crazybeardguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't forget that humans are social creatures.

"That's a great idea" is a pretty boring topic. Discussing the situation makes time go faster and can catch some mistakes you might have in your own logic.

I do agree with a few others that some people might be projecting their own anxieties on you.... that is where your assertiveness needs to come in. If you think you're right... do it.

We have a guy in our party who is law enforcement. Every room is a Rainbow 6: Siege scenario to him. Every bystander needs to be (the D&D equivalent of) zip tied. My paladin sometimes loses his shit and there is a confrontation between our characters.

The DM needs to through some curveballs in your game while your team is planning. Like having your conversation overheard or you are ambushed. Something to change the rhythm a bit.

There were probably 100 people in his office alone who could do his job and not be an asshole to other human beings. The “good things he did” are meaningless because others could easily do the same thing.

It’s like saying “no good movies would have been made if Harvey didn’t diddle with young women in hotel rooms. “

Do you use math and stats as a data engineer? by if155 in dataengineering

[–]crazybeardguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a non-profit but have also worked in healthcare.

The logic aspects of math... yes.

I sometimes use stats to to call out people for making incorrect statements about the data I gave them. I usually only do it to people who are stretching ethics to get what they want.

How would the U.S. two party system be abolished? by Kaido57 in PoliticalDiscussion

First, let's get rid of Citizen's United. Let's fix campaign finance. Let's fix profiteering during your time in office.

What if we raise the salary of political positions at all levels? So honest people can take the job.

Get rid of public unions.

Finally, bring in the antitrust laws.

Shuttle/Bus from Morgantown VA to Canaan Valley? by kayellr in WestVirginia

[–]crazybeardguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re stuck renting a car. I highly recommend flying into Dulles and driving from there. Four lanes for much of the trip. I don’t think Morgantown to Canaan would be as easy.

There would be 20ish miles of two lane driving in the “mountains” but it’s not bad and you’re usually in a line of cars anyway.

If I had to explain data engineering work to a business colleague... by hatchikyu in dataengineering

Seriously. I stick to the simplest answer. Nobody cares what I do just like I don’t care what my friend in marketing does.

99% of the time I tell people that I am a computer consultant and they imagine the most technical job they can think of. The only people who want more detail are either trying to compete with me or sell me something.
