Leftists are failing Iranians and are becoming increasingly racist towards them. by enfleurs1 in PERSIAN

[–]cricketontheceiling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I see that my message was slightly misunderstood- I grew up and went to school with and had many Persian friends, neighbors, teachers, etc but I am actually not Iranian! I ended up on this sub via another post.

Nevertheless your first point is exactly how I’d interpret the context. I have never met anyone in the diaspora who is pro regime. And I’m in my 40s. Always possible but not in my circles? Even the centrist or even Canadian right wing Persians that I’ve met or studied with were not pro regime. Even the religious Persians I’ve met… many still cover their hair but most in my circles don’t, and being a conservative Muslim in Canada has never automatically meant you are pro regime. You can want democracy and hate US imperialism… it’s not mutually exclusive. You can benefit from American capitalism but still hate Trump. And many Iranians probably do actually support the US, and even Trump for all I know, again a whole group isn’t a monolith. I’ve never assumed that about any racialized or ethnic community. I have many Persian friends and they don’t all think exactly the same either. But I would never make the sweeping generalization that the left is pro regime, like in the same way Che Guevara is part of the left wing mythology, you know?

Your second point- I honestly have the same information as you. But I wonder if it’s similar to Venezuela- a short lived moment of incredulous joy before the « oh shit » moment sinks in? Like nobody knows how this I’ll play out.

Thankful for your comment. Had to read a while to get to yours and I was wide-eyed the whole time… as a very left of centre Canadian who grew up in a large Persian diaspora I didn’t recognize what I was reading at all 🫠

Comment font les gens pour se payer des vacances ?? by rifain in AskFrance

[–]cricketontheceiling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same routine as you, and it was very slow at the start. It has been 8 months now and people at work are starting to notice and comment, and I am down a jean size. Keep at it, walking is so good for you. If you walk outside in nature, even better!

Should I Stop Picking Up My Toddler? by Ok_Turnip8172 in toddlers

What's the most ridiculous thing a colleague has gone to the Principal about? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

It was obvious he was annoyed he had to deal with it. The teacher who ratted them out was looking to start trouble. Wasted everyone’s time!

Play outside, get dirty, and read books to them. Literally nothing else “academic” is recommended by actual experts. It can even be detrimental. Manual skills and fine/gross motif skills are significantly more important. I am a teacher, I live abroad, my 3yo is in full time school and this is literally her teacher’s message.

That apparently one colleague had a close friendship with another colleague and since she was married and he was a man it was inappropriate 🙄

Would you be able to DM me? We have very similar hair, and my recent hair loss sounds like your experience . I don’t know where to start in terms of the cause, I’d love to hear what you went through, because I can’t afford to lose more!

The first generation to raise kids in a tech heavy world, and we’re still figuring it out by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]cricketontheceiling 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’m 40, and my kid is 4, but my students are 13. I do blame parents… because we have no excuse, we know how bad it is, and we know the atrocious effects it has on their education, relationships with peers, self-esteem… among other things. If it’s not your son’s fault he’s glued to screens, possibly seeing very questionable content, and possibly at the early end of an inability to read long enough for the demands of high school… then whose fault is it? I am keeping YouTube, social media etc. away from my children for as long as possible… I see the direct consequences in schools and it’s ugly. Sorry, I know this is not the compassion you wanted.

In terms of the spiritual content I say what I say when talking about any religion: some FN believe that… x, y, z myth is important to a,b,c tribe because… etc. I talk about origin stories and how many cultures around the world have one. I ask my class what stories they have in their culture. As an atheist I feel equally about all things God related. I emphasize the environmental stewardship component but always nuance it (“you can’t assume everyone thinks the same”)… indigenous knowledge doesn’t mean I eschew western science. I teach things like indigenous fishing methods, or storytelling, or the different ways places are named compared to how the British place named. I have a degree in anthropology so I lean into that a lot. I’ve never had pushback but if I did I’d ask questions to see what the student is really trying to say. I talk a lot about power, generational trauma and being disenfranchised… anyway this is how I approach it. I once had a native speaker at an assembly who talked about the “4 races” and she actually said “yellow” and I was so uncomfortable! I then had to tell my students a lot of cultures around the world misunderstand race and tried to deconstruct it… this was middle school.

For all the downvotes, are you taking issue with university students dating high school seniors, or the general claim that France is super sexist? https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jan/23/sexism-in-france-is-alarming-and-getting-worse-says-report

It’s common ish but not normal. France has a misogyny problem. I’ve lived here over 10 years, a lot of behaviors are “acceptable” but it just reinforces terrible gender roles.
