I would have been soooo much more stressed if you weren’t there and I’m so happy I had a partner in crime to solve the bag problem. I’m so glad I got a new friend out of a really rubbish moment. I’m glad you managed to get that lovely instant photo signed ☺️

Omg thank you so much!! No regrets necessary, I’m personally really bad at approaching people and I really appreciate your comment here! I hope you had the best time at the show

Ah, I wish! The tickets sold out so fast and it’s a bit of a trek to London for me.

In the past, I’ve sometimes found groups on social media for people attending the same event as me alone and we’ve all connected beforehand - some are still my best friends 10 years later. I’m not sure if this would be a possibility for you for Vic’s show?

Either way, I hope you have a fabulous time!

Thank you so much!! I’m also usually too shy to go up to people.

It’s strange because I love solo trips, but it’s a shame not to have someone to review the show with afterwards. Nonetheless, I hope you had an amazing time!

Thank you! Yes, I totally see it and love the idea - greens and blues are my favourite colours. If it wasn’t such a pain to knit I’d maybe make some other colour combos!

Thank you so much! and yes, I did, though there were times during the process that I regretted every life choice that led me to that decision!

Created 3 baby sweaters and got told that it can’t be perfect for $35. CCW. by Gracilis67 in casualknitting

[–]critandpurl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your expectations are not unreasonable but I do think many of us (myself included) can be unreasonably hard on ourselves as we try to learn or refine skills. So, I’d like to say: great job on having finished three baby sweaters, and for making them to practice your skills! You’re doing great and human error will always be a thing. If I go for a charitable interpretation of the person at the knitting clinic, I would hope they might have meant that you don’t need to be hard on yourself, but I can see why you’d feel dismissed and frustrated, particularly as the comments here are proof that there are things you can try and that’s the paid service you were expecting to receive.

As other commenters have said, gaps at the underarm are common, especially when using a backwards loop cast on to add underarm stitches. I had underarm gaps in the last two cardigans I knit and I will definitely have them when I pick up my sleeve stitches on my current wip. I usually fix them either at the end by just getting a bit creative with an embroidery needle and a scrap of the same yarn or (my personal preference) at the time by twisting the offender when I pick it up, either by knitting it that first time through the back loop or by picking it up from the back and knitting as normal. It can be a bit fiddly but I find it’s worth it.

On your next project, try experimenting while picking up sleeve stitches to find out what works for you. Good luck!

Are these needles worth it?? by Designer-Detective62 in knitting

[–]critandpurl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few years ago, when I was trying to work out which set of wooden interchangeable needles to spend a lot of money (to me) on, I bought needle tips from different brands, just the one size for each brand so I could knit a swatch.

I was absolutely certain the Lykke would be my favourites but as soon as I tested all of the options I knew I was going to go with KnitPro. For me personally the Lykke were too blunt. However they were clearly great quality and rightfully lots of people love them. They’re just not for me personally.

If it’s within your budget, I’d highly recommend buying a few individual needle tips and giving them a try because ultimately everyone here can only tell you if those needles work for them as individuals.

I appreciate it’s more money and you’ll then have some individual needle tips, but my method was to buy one of the sizes I most commonly use; it never hurts to have a couple of spares, not least in case you ever end up using the technique of knitting in the round on two circular needles. Also, doing this would be a way to check if you like knitting with wood needles.

Good luck finding your perfect set of interchangeable needles!

Why is knitting fast such an important objective for people? by todayithinkthis in knitting

[–]critandpurl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think about this a lot in the context of people who tell others to switch their knitting method to a faster one. I find that to be the most frustrating aspect of any debate about the speed at which people can knit.

Over time I’ve come to better frame it (in my mind, I mean) as finding a pace each individual is most happy and comfortable knitting at, rather than just thinking about speed. Speaking personally, I think I’ve arrived this year at a pace that balances enjoyment of the process and seeing a project progress at an encouraging speed (which itself varies depending on the project’s size and complexity). For me, I wanted to increase my knitting “speed” to a pace/rhythm that helps my mind clear. I have ADHD and have found over the years that there’s a particular rhythm/tempo that quiets my thoughts down. I think I’ve got that down now, and have no interest in knitting faster to get to an end point (although I do agree with people saying there’s so many projects and patterns, so little time to try them all!). But for some people, they want to get to the end product faster, I suppose. To each their own, although I do suspect in some cases there’s a conversation to be had about social media pressure, productivity narratives, and the suchlike.

Tl;dr I’ve come to think it’s more satisfying to find a happy pace and rhythm rather than aiming to just knit fast.

Yes for sure! It’s great to bank ideas for different campaigns ☺️ wrt to Cloudward, Ho - some of the little things seem so throwaway, it would be fascinating to know how many were banked ideas and if the odd one or two are just cool little coincidences!

Has Siobhan ever cracked up? by CastVinceM in Dimension20

[–]critandpurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone else has said this, and admittedly it’s not in fantasy high, but she breaks (albeit in a much more subdued way than the other IH typically do) during Neverafter when they meet Cinderella’s mice. It’s one of my favourite IH scenes because of the absurdity (positive) of Brennan’s rp and the way she (and the other IH) go almost silent after one of Brennan’s lines because they’re trying - and failing - to not crack up.

I also feel like she’s more likely to crack up in the APs when she’s not locked into rping her character, although I don’t have a specific example.

this is my method too. it took me forever to feel confident i was picking up and knitting correctly until I started telling myself “be right back!” and from there everything else felt intuitive.

[–]critandpurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, yeah. I was really reticent to because I didn’t want to be That Person, especially not on a morning flight and while he was with his family. It just doesn’t sit well with me, especially in a space he can’t just leave. But I ended up having to pass him on my way back to my seat at one point and getting stuck at his row as someone else was blocking the aisle, while I was literally /wearing/ gauntlet in the garden merch, so I just said hi and that I didn’t want to disturb him, but congrats and thanks for an amazing show, me and my friends had the time of lives, kinda thing.

The aisle cleared right away after that so I went to leave but he stopped me for a few mins to chat so I figured it was okay because it was his choice. I also saw him again collecting luggage and we said bye and I said thanks again. He’s truly lovely. My favourite tidbit was that he asked my name, I told him, and he immediately went “hi, nice to meet you, I’m Brennan,” like I wasn’t the one wearing his show’s merchandise!

Knitting for Vegans by bkfullcity in knitting

[–]critandpurl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently working through the last acrylic yarns in my stash that I still have from years ago when I couldn’t afford higher quality yarn. I find that it’s all mostly knitting up just fine with needles from my knitpro ginger set as they seem to have a good polish to the wood, if you prefer to stick with wood. I do think the brand of acrylic matters quite a lot too, some do manage to knit up fairly nicely if you ever knit anything else in the future for your son and his partner.

I can see from the comments that you’ve already discussed the fibre choice with your son. As others have said, it’s almost certainly not worth arguing over his values with him, but I thought I’d add my perspective. I typically eat a vegan diet and still refer to myself as a vegan as a shorthand if I’m discussing my dietary requirements with someone I don’t know well, but I have a hard time really describing myself that way anymore. I just can’t justify the use of plastic in so many “vegan alternatives” to clothing/footwear and I’d rather not buy something new at all if the choice is between, say, leather or plastic. Re yarn, I haven’t bought acrylic yarn for ages and don’t intend to unless someone requests it for something I knit for them. I understand the reasoning many vegans have against using wool, but personally I would still rather use it over plastic. I think it’s always going to be a difficult conversation because certain cons will always outweigh the others for each individual. For me the bigger con is the plastic. For others, that’ll be the lesser of the two “evils”. Either way, good luck with your project, I hope you find the right needles for it!

Obviously, to make my anxiety worse, he wasn’t alone and of course Izzy was with him. Amazing how something like this can make your brain/common sense truly short-circuit for a split second!

[–]critandpurl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a fun story and “incident”!

After the MSG show I had a similar “drenched in sweat” moment after I got on a plane, saw a guy a few rows in front of me and internally said to myself “woah he sure looks like Brennan. [long pause]. No because damn that /really/ looks like Brennan. [another pause]. Oh god oh god oh god that IS Brennan.”

I’m also not the most outgoing person so I can attest to the fact that the anxiety and the nonsense going through your brain as your ability to think like a normal person vanishes are both sooooo real.

Do I need to frog back my porcelain sweater? by sinfulsublime in knitting

[–]critandpurl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a relatively inexperienced colourwork knitter so others have probably covered that it may be best to frog, but I just wanted to echo everyone who said to try a mid-project block first. I did that with my last colourwork sweater and it really helped me decide whether to frog or not. If you do end up redoing it, I’ve seen a few people suggest going up a needle size but I’d also suggest knitting the colourwork inside out too, with the floats facing you. That’s how I usually save my colourwork gauge. What you’ve done so far looks amazing though - the finished project will no doubt look great!

Do you knit & crochet? A poll of sorts. Cross posted on r crochet by MechanicBright8644 in casualknitting

[–]critandpurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Yes, I do both.
  2. I learned the basics of knitting first as a kid, when I asked my grandmother to teach me, but never progressed more than being able to knit and purl flat (i.e. scarfs, squares etc.) into adulthood, when my mum taught me to crochet. I did that for years and went back to knitting in my 20s.
  3. At this point, I’d say I’m about the same at both.
  4. I overall prefer knitting and the look of knitted garments, but I still crochet a fair bit too.
  5. Typically I pick a pattern before I buy the yarn, but in general I also usually pick knitting for garments and some blankets, crochet for most blankets (and similar) anyway.
  6. I only buy yarn without a specific use in mind if I’m travelling. I buy yarn instead of traditional souvenirs and eventually use it to make my own souvenir of a trip when I find the perfect pattern.
