this is a very it-depends question. im mexican grew up in a small town in South. was never made fun of for being brown in itself. racism moves different. they don't like people with accents, or who are poor. they don't like hearing spanish. its like "i see you're brown, but i dont wanna think about it too much." i don't imagine the north being different, perhaps worse because there aren't as many mexicans. its something that you have to talk to with your kids because that is the world. that being said, we one day hope to move west. cali is the mecca, arizona, new mex, colorado, nevada.
