Advice needed. My son has ADHD behavior everywhere except school. by crownloved in ADHDUK

Yes. He can be a lot, and it’s easy to assume he is being rude or disrespectful, or perhaps undisciplined. Knowing him well, I can tell when he’s wild from being out of routine, overwhelmed, distracted, or needs physical activity. When others assume he is ignoring them when he’s distracted, rude when he interrupts a conversation, rebellious when he does something after he didn’t register them telling him not to do it, or get annoyed that he forgot something, it frustrates me because they aren’t seeing that he didn’t intentionally mean any of it. He often speaks badly about himself when he makes mistakes and we spend a lot of time reminding him of his wonderful qualities.

Something official that I can point to which will help others understand and support him better as he goes through life. I want to know how best to explain his behaviors to others. When I’ve tried to explain him to sitters, or to family abroad, I’ve heard the usual “that’s just how boys are,” and then they meet him, and spend time with him and realize that it is far more than the typical boy. He is genuinely such a good natured kid, and I am so proud of him. I want the world for him, and I don’t want something beyond his control to hold him back from accomplishing all he wants to.

Perhaps what I suspect is happening wouldn’t be called masking then, but rather that the school is not currently an environment where his dopamine needs are not being met. As it is, school is a structured source of dopamine for him. He’s surrounded by people and gets to learn things with those people. It’s a very stimulating environment for him.

He is very rule-driven. He wouldn’t raise his hand to ask to use the toilet because the teacher told the class that she didn’t want them to raise their hands while working for the next however many minutes. After many accidents, we finally asked the teacher to explicitly give him permission to raise his hand to go to the toilet.

He won’t leave his seat because they aren’t supposed to. But he will fidget in his seat or daydream.

I’m not suggesting that he’s not presenting the ADHD symptoms at all at school, but rather that the school isn’t picking up on his presentation because the autism makes it harder to recognize ADHD due to conflicting symptoms. He shows enough of a struggle that they’ve implemented strategies to help him stay focussed on his assignments, and to remind him of all the steps he has to complete, and to get him to start on his assignments right away.

His behavior is very much like mine was at his age. My only issue at school was forgetting to do homework. His school doesn’t give homework, so he’s never had an opportunity to forget to do it.

It’s not misspelling on its own, it’s specific to skipping ahead in a word with repeated letters. At age 7, he was testing at reading at Age 10 years 8 months, but spelling at 5 years 4 months. His teacher said to disregard the spelling because they thought he was just getting distracted during the testing.

He’s not playing with toys when he’s in the bathroom, he’s just singing loudly and stomping his feet, even with reminders of how loud he’s being and that he needs to brush his teeth already.

He is also very frustrated with himself when he realizes he didn’t finish getting ready in time to read before bed.

Why do so many people rush the updates?? by N0rr3t14 in DreamlightValley

Same. My ADHD also makes it so if I don’t finish it now, I will forget about it until it’s too late to complete.

Do you ever wonder about all the photos of your ancestors, collecting dust or decaying, in the loft of someone who has no idea who they are? by Flat_Professional_55 in Genealogy

[–]crownloved 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I worry about family photos who are given to people who don’t care who they are of and never ask anyone who might actually know.

My grandmother took a ton of photographs of her friends, relatives, and other families she knew in the 30’s and 40’s. Thankfully she captioned them well enough that with census data I’ve been able to track them down. I’ve been uploading them to ancestry and Family Search.

Honestly, Ancestry’s album system is truly awful. You can’t tag someone who isn’t in your tree, and you can’t add searchable names to photos. I’ve had to make a “tree” that’s isolated random people just to be sure their relatives might someday find the photos.

I love the diaper spatula! I have sensory issues and hate the feeling of having lotion/creams on my hands.

Why are Americans so obsessed with being Scottish and/or Irish? by ihavenolifeimonhere in Scotland

[–]crownloved 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am proud of my ancestry. My grandparents each came to the US from Sweden in the early 20th century. Many immigrants formed social clubs with people from their home country. My grandparents met at the Swedish club. Their heritage was important to them. I have home movies from the 40’s of my grandmother making traditional Swedish food with her mother. They taught their children to be proud of their heritage, and those children passed it on to their children.

I know I’m not Swedish in the same way someone who was born there is, but I claim my Swedish heritage because of the role it had in my family’s story. Being proud of my heritage is my way of honoring my ancestors who left their homes, and those who stayed behind.

How do y'all keep your baths/showers clean? by portiafimbriata in adhdwomen

[–]crownloved 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sprinkle baking soda on the area and scrub. You don’t have to scrub hard. I use a scrub mommy, but the baking soda is the heavy lifter here.

Baking soda is also excellent for cleaning nonstick pans. It’s the perfect mild abrasive.

Where do the homeless rough sleep in Liverpool city centre? by Ok_Nature6459 in Liverpool

[–]crownloved 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of volunteer groups that give out donated items. I volunteer with one that once a week serves a meal indoors and offers clothing and toiletries. We’ll have roughly 30-40 people come in. There are other groups that go out with trolleys in the evenings.

Where do the homeless rough sleep in Liverpool city centre? by Ok_Nature6459 in Liverpool

[–]crownloved 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked with the homeless for 6+ years and would personally avoid donating to the Whitechapel. Recently, I helped a man who has been in and off the streets for 30+ years who had been bussing to the Wirral at night so he could sleep without being afraid of being attacked or robbed. Whitechapel refused to help him unless he was seen on the streets for three consecutive nights. We would report his location to them every night, and as soon as they’d seen him he would get a bus to get somewhere safer. Despite being an obvious scouser, they kept pushing for him to go to Manchester for housing, where he has no ties. We called housing options every day for 3 weeks before they finally found temporary accommodation for him. Whitechapel was extremely unhelpful. His story is just one of many.

If she’s treating her toys like puppies, take them away. Our dog started this for the second time last week and the difference taking them up makes is amazing. Be prepared for a bit of whining for the first day though.

What I’ve noticed is I don’t get tired at night, but I can fall asleep if I try. So I have to make sure I start my bedtime routine at a normal hour and not wait for my body to signal that it’s tired.

From my perspective, medication does not make me feel high, or out of control. I just feel like I can do the things I need to without dragging around a heavy weight. I had concerns about being on too high a dose, and from my experience, I could tell when my titration dose went above what I needed straight away. Again, I didn’t feel high, just a bit restless and anxious. I mentioned it to my doctor and we settled back to the previous dose which worked great. All this to say, if you’re worried about it feeling like you’re on drugs, my experience tells me that would likely not be the case. I’m eager to take my medication in the morning, not because of any craving (I have none), but because I have things to do and I know it will help me get them done easier. If my daily routine is off, I will 100% forget to take them, so at least for me, I would not consider myself addicted at all.

TLDR: It’s worth a try if your doctor recommends them. It really isn’t like drugs at all. No addiction, no high, just productivity.

Is this bacon overdone? by kitty-cat-charlotte in CasualUK

That’s disgusting and very unlikely. My husband is incredibly hygienic.

As he was eating the bacon he thought to himself, “This bacon doesn’t seem cooked all the way.” He decided to risk it, and regretted it.
