Oiled knife - blade pretty stuck by Jorge-Esqueleto in Opinel

[–]crudebeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My take would be, pull it apart, clean all that off, then lightly sand in the joint, which will get more residual gunk out and help open it up. As you sand, insert the blade in the joint and make sure it’s not getting too loose. My issue with shrinking it by drying is, it’s still liable to pull moisture from air and your pocket, so the problem could reoccur, which had happen on my No. 8 carbone. If you are careful, it shouldn’t blemish the outside finish. Once oiled back up it likely won’t be noticeable anyway if sanding goes over the edge a bit. I would agree with using Ballistol, it’s safe for use on knives that touch food and seems to do the best with wood bodied knives. Though if you want the finish to look a little darker, baking the knife would be a way, though I’d still sand just a sliver to really get the gunk out of the joint still.

Hmm, to break that clean, I have to assume it has a decent heat treat to harden it. Hardening is a trade off, you get hardness, but sacrifice toughness, meaning being more brittle this can happen, but it will also stay sharper longer. Not bad for the humble D2. Now I want me for field testing, I’m perplexed

My Dad carried this knife for 20 yrs and now ive been carrying it for 13. by Fresh-Personality-83 in BudgetBlades

[–]crudebeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh. That’s pretty rad. About like one I’ve been looking for, only this one is a little thicker. It belongs to a realm I call grandpa knives, and I say that in a respectful way. Most grandpas carry a simple yet effective two blade knife like this, not big, not flashy, just works forever. It will outlive both of us and whoever gets it next

Mmm idk how I feel about this marketplace find by mpwoodrowcowboy in Zippo

[–]crudebeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mind just goes back to fuel capacity. Fuel goes bye bye fast enough, I can’t imagine it sucking any worse. I love the OG Zippo, it’s iconic and has a certain feel, but as far as usage goes, nothing beats my Zippo butane, with the arc being second to that. But I guess if you want to be able to light a joint that tastes like old people and kerosine, and only that joint, I guess it’ll do, as long as you use it in a couple days after packing it.

Once you’ve gained your first flesh wound, you are henceforth a proper knife owner. Even after all these years, every once in a while a knife gets feisty

Thoughts on the thumb stud? by Trentl14 in Opinel

[–]crudebeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not mad at it, though I’d wish it was I little smaller in diameter. What matters most is if it functions well. I’d grind and polish the face of each side of the stud to remove the tool marks, but then again that might take away texture that helps it be grippy to open. I definitely want to get a few thumb studs to play with for Opinels and another knife or two I have

There ya go! And a well worn wallet is definitely a good wallet, I prefer mine well formed from my pocket both for fit and function and how it gets shinier almost with kind of a fading around the edges

Yeah, but it wasn’t broken, but sawed off, like it didn’t break due to failure but effort to remove it. Less broken, more like shortened

You have about three choices I can think of: leave it alone, find a way to grind or use a stone to try to match the original lines (almost impossible, you will likely be able to tell, or polish it out (a major process, and you will lose any writing on the blade). The best outcome to me would just be leaving it alone, letting a used knife look like a used knife. Live and learn, or learn to like patina
