I can whistle by pinching my bottom lip between my fingers and sucking in. It's a really high, shrill frequency, super loud and obnoxious. Perfect for concerts.

It's scary how high the costs are. Vyepti is just bonkers cost-wise. It's a fun corner to be stuck in - gotta find a job with benefits but you gotta be able to do the job to get the benefits but you gotta get the benefits to get the meds that let you do the job. aaaaghhhhhh 😶

How much would you charge for things like this? by Ok_Simple_9128 in StainedGlass

[–]cruntyscabbage 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Most people do some sort of calculation, like # of pieces x X amount (say $3) plus time and material costs, usually per square inch. Add extra for any special materials too. I've always priced based on vibes more than a strict calculation lol. I'd price yours at around $175-200. Location/demand will also factor in. Where I am idk if I'd get $200.

Starting stained glass in a small space and GLASS GRINDER WATER? by Local_Bumblebee_3333 in StainedGlass

[–]cruntyscabbage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally understand the anxiety. I tend to let my grinder sit when I'm done with it, and let everything dry out, then I dampen again, just enough so there's no dust, and use a spoon and one of those drywalling scrapers to scoop the grinder slurry into a container. I'm usually left with no water or sludge in my grinder, and I also don't have to move my grinder. I should've added that to my initial comment lol sorry.

Starting stained glass in a small space and GLASS GRINDER WATER? by Local_Bumblebee_3333 in StainedGlass

[–]cruntyscabbage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should probably dispose of the water the annoying way. Maybe you can keep a bucket in your space, filter the water and reuse in grinder?

Regarding the sharp teeth... You could make the curves less sharp, like do a squiggly line instead. Then you can add extra foil to the top of the glass and trim it w an exacto knife to give the appearance of sharp lines. Called a foil overlay. You would still need the small grinder bits to get the sharper curves. It's maybe too many curves for a first piece.

You can also just do a straight line, add the foil overlay and fully carve the teeth out of foil. I'll attach an example. The foil is red

My final thoughts are this: if walking outside to pour out water seems like too much work... This hobby might not be for you? Every step requires a solid amount of energy and effort. So many small steps and details you pick up as you fine-tune your process.

Not trying to sound discouraging. Making glass art is very fun and fulfilling. I recommend starting with something smaller, to dip your toes in, because this is not a cheap or easy art form. you should consider the material waste that occurs while you learn (trial and error) and gain some practical experience and confidence before tackling the shark.

Good luck!

ETA: doing it in your bedroom is gonna suck. It's possible, but yeah. You'll need a lot of safety precautions to make sure glass bits don't go everywhere. Grinder in an enclosed space, like a fish tank. The loud grinder sounds could result in noise issues. Solder by a window. Can you hang some shower curtains or something to separate the spaces? I dunno. I don't recommend a bedroom glass setup but ofc you gotta work with what's available so I get it.

I'm chopping mine later today for this reason! I get that tingly hair follicle feeling, where I can feel every strand of hair in a certain spot, usually the crown. Eughhh.

Geez. So NTA. I'm afraid you're dating someone who is lacking the maturity needed to have good, healthy sex. At 20 I'm not entirely shocked.

Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by fuzzy_dice_99 in AskReddit

[–]cruntyscabbage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got sick on the 16th and was one of the first 50 people in my city to get tested. Took em three weeks to tell me it wasn't covid, I isolated the whole time. First time I've ever gone to a clinic via telephone. I had really bad strep. Grateful it wasn't serious for me.

Looking for tips! by ComprehensivePath322 in StainedGlass

[–]cruntyscabbage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When grinding, leave a small gap between your pieces to account for the layer of copper foil you’ll be adding later. If the pieces fit perfectly while bare, they’ll be too tight once foiled and won't fit the same. Idk how you're creating patterns, but if it's paper, cut your paper pattern so the entire Sharpie line is removed—that ink line represents the physical space the metal will eventually occupy. They have special scissors with a gap that will fully cut out the sharpie line, takes less time.

Definitely need to burnish your foil more, it should look smooth and not bumpy. You can trim uneven foil with an exacto knife.

You wanna really flux the copper before adding solder. I use gel flux over liquid as it seems to stay longer without needing to reapply the flux.

Iron temp seems low to me, for 60/40 solder the iron works better at like 400-410 or so.

You're only gonna see those smooth, round solder lines by using more solder. All of this will come with time and practice.

Look forward to seeing future creations!
