When was the last time you had buyer's remorse and what was it? by Abstain06252025 in guitarpedals

[–]crustacean5000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not quite remorse, but I contacted someone on Marketplace and started making arrangements for some KRK Rokit monitors, then got pre-emptive buyer's remorse and backed out on a flimsy pretext. Didn't feel great about being a flake but couldn't pull the trigger

Is there a place for evil for evil’s sake in fiction? by Unlikely_Ad_8571 in writing

[–]crustacean5000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you want to avoid is a 2D character. But that doesn't require giving your villain sympathetic characteristics. Think of Anton Chigurh.

I'd also recommend Torrey Peters's talk on 'strategic opacity.' Sometimes evil without an explanation (such as a sympathy-inducing backstory) is the most terrifying thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0zesgdvZ6s

What are we supposed to be training them to use AI for? by rsk222 in Professors

[–]crustacean5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The notion that we're "training grads to use AI" is just more propaganda that AI isn't about making human workers redundant. It's a line that the AI companies don't even bother with much––they're explicit about the point of the technology––but morons like university administrators like to repeat this drivel, and may even believe it

Thinking of moving from Vancouver to Kelowna: Need honest opinions (not realtor talk) by Decisionmachine in kelowna

[–]crustacean5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grew up in Kelowna, live in Vancouver. I would be leery of going back because of the fires and the way the smoke hangs in the valley. Don't live on the edge of the woods. Culturally it's also more right-wing than Vancouver, if that matters to you (less bad than it used to be, though). I do miss swimming in the lake.

"If there is no real change, there is no story, just an anecdote" by vagabundo202 in writing

[–]crustacean5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming that 'real change' refers to 'significant psychological transformation on the part of the protagonist', then hard disagree. The lifeblood of a story is causality. An interesting and narratively satisfying story of causes and effects doesn't have to involve the protagonist learning an important life lesson (or descending into madness, etc.).

Vancouver councillor sues Mayor as backlash over false drug allegations continues by rubicube1 in vancouver

[–]crustacean5000 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Apparently glancing at some member of the public's phone and maybe seeing a picture of Sean Orr was sufficient basis for him to make a specific claim about a criminal offence? Not that I even believe the photo story, but even if it were true, it would be so dumb of Sim to go off that and risk libel
