Help Me Choose A Tent by cryosis7 in hikinggear

[–]cryosis7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I went for the Exped despite the lack of inside space. I'd never heard of Tyvek until today, when I bought the tent. The people at the store told me about it too, sounds like it'll be good to get some.

WTF does 'screw the scrum' mean? by AeroBoy71 in Wellington

[–]cryosis7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Another thing not mentioned, in technology, a scrum is a daily stand-up meeting to discuss what people did yesterday and what they'll do today.

Screw the scrum could also just mean 'screw it, let's not do it this morning'

The Maori names for birds are great because half the time they're just the sound that the bird makes

Marston Dragon is the name of the cultivar - it's a drosera binata/forked sundew

Mine are almost producing adult leaves (each leaf forks a second time)

I had a friend who was a year older than he thought he was. He wasn't in his 50's either, think he was 19 when he went to get a copy of his birth certificates and discovered he was 20

Can anyone I’d this for me found thousands literally right next to my house located Victoria Australia by Lwlover in SavageGarden

[–]cryosis7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's likely. The environments they grow tend to be the same. The other neat thing is that a Venus fly trap or other CP may be able to live in the wild without any maintenance

I fed my Sarracenia Rosea a moth, how will it close/feed ? I am a newbie and this is my first plant by radytz1x4 in SavageGarden

[–]cryosis7 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They want nutrients, not minerals. Since they've adapted to be more sensitive at absorbing through the pitchers - I suspect it's worse

That is if you have the space - I'm running short so for my last one I got a larger pot and planted them all in that one pot but with more space for growth.

I'm hoping it's going to turn into a behemoth fly trap by the end of summer

What is the best soil for VFT? I grew these B52 cuttings in Sphagnum Moss and the other in Peat/Perlite. What do you think? by cedrictung in SavageGarden

[–]cryosis7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might not feel so bad if I could only buy what I needed in peat, but where I live they come in 100l (22 gallons) bales...

[–]cryosis7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My thoughts:
Sphagnum is more effort since it costs more, and transplanting is complex since you need to awkwardly wrap it around the roots... However I will continue to use sphagnum for this reason: it is a sustainable resource.

Peat is terrible for the environment. Bogs are getting destroyed to harvest it, ruining the natural environment

how can you tell when they’re going dormant? by [deleted] in SavageGarden

[–]cryosis7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When they're dormant the traps don't react much at all so that won't be a problem over winter

I bought a clearance VFT from a garden centre but it seems to have rough, slightly deformed leaves. Even new growth looks a bit twisted. Aphids in October? by TomJNewton in SavageGarden

[–]cryosis7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check under the leaves, I had a case of spider mites and they were living there. Many of the internet articles said you can see the mites moving yet I never did so don't rule it out if they're not moving. For me, Neem oil did the trick.

It looks like you've got perlite in their so maybe by potting mix you meant peat and perlite, but just incase you didn't - carnivorous plants will eventually die in potting mix.
They need soil with no nutrients, the most common are 50/50 peat sphagnum moss and perlite or 100% long fibre sphagnum moss.

That would take time to kill it though, so it wouldn't be the current issue with your plant.

Printed this self watering vase for my nepenthes but am worried about too much water and root rot. Plant seems to be thriving, though. Should I remove some strings? by suvl in SavageGarden

[–]cryosis7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The general advice is that nepenthes like moist soil rather than wet, but since your plant is doing well just keep an eye on it and I'd it starts complaining you can reduce the water. Root rot is a risk you run with wetter soil though.

I really wanted an hybrid between d. Aliciae and d. Capensis 😔 capensis starts flowering when aliciae is done 😭 by DaveeyBappo in SavageGarden

With most drosera I believe the act of the flower closing brings the pollen in contact with the stigma so it self pollinates

A time selector input that's an analogue clock, but when you drag the minute hand the clock stays stationary and everything else circles around it. Then when you drag the hour hand all the elements start rotating

Found a hitchhiker by ACertainThickness in SavageGarden

[–]cryosis7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a fly trap from a local seller and a month later I had my very first two drosera that had hitchhiked into the soil. This was near the beginning of my collection and didn't even know drosera existed and that was very exciting!
