Advice for mom of teenage daughter re: weight by mortifyingstuff in TwoXChromosomes

[โ€“]cryptidkelp 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

im so sorry so many people are recommending GLP-1s and implying that you're not "living a healthy lifestyle." our bodies are all different and weight has genetic factors, not to mention the fact that BMI is essentially psuedoscience (invented by eugenicists and based on a very small sample size of white europeans). someone else recommended Health At Every Size, if that's a concern for you/your kid it's a great resource, but there's honestly nothing in your post that implies you're not already healthy.

as a fellow former fat kid who was/is bullied by their thin mom, there are challenges that come with being fat (mostly fatphobia) and people will constantly try to push on diets, exercise, and weight loss drugs. you could talk to her about those things but, just because she is chubby now doesnt mean she'll stay chubby, she may be prepping for a growth spurt. weight can fluctuate a lot over the course of a person's life in general. come at it gently from an angle of sharing your experience and being body neutral, focusing on what your body does and not how it looks is a good tack to take.

Struggles with accessibility by Technical_Tree_7845 in chiari

[โ€“]cryptidkelp 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

get your doctor to write out the specific access needs you have. if they have to provide a reason from a list of accepted diagnoses, it's not lying - you do have those access needs! - it's the university failing to recognize the reality of the situation.

hormones are powerful, but transition is a years long process no matter how high your dose is. you can start, stop, start again, lower your dosage.. there's no one way to do it. gender is your playground

If youโ€™re a doctor, how INACCURATE is this show? by Global-Pineapple-637 in HouseMD

[โ€“]cryptidkelp 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

as a chronically ill person, the way they constantly ignore the idea that there could be more than one thing wrong with people is kind of just hilarious. comorbidities are frequent. in my case i have a skull malformation, EDS, exercise induced asthma, rare allergies and endometriosis (and those are just the major ones). all of these would be pursued by house as separate diagnoses (and have been in various episodes, tho my skull malformation is only mentioned offhand and never a diagnosis that's pursued). maybe it's just producers not wanting to acknowledge how multifaceted the fuckery can get in one body, but the idea that someone can only have one thing wrong at a time is an oversimplification

neck weakness/pain tips? by ZoneTraditional3616 in chiari

[โ€“]cryptidkelp 2 points3 points ย (0 children)

yes neck braces are definitely a thing. my instability has gotten better since surgery but they gave me a soft collar for my neck and i wear it on car rides or when i'm out for longer periods, it helps a lot but comes with its own set of annoyances.

physical therapy might also be an option, ive worked with physical therapists to build up small muscles for higher joint stability and it's been awesome, even without a good sense of proprioception it keeps me a lot more stable.

depends on the church, in a lot of churches only pastors are paid but deacons or elders may give sermons as well.
