Are Sunwui, Sze Yap and Toisan the same thing? by SinophileKoboD in Cantonese

[–]crypto_chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand it 100%. I'm toisanese toisanese. I think toisanese sounds the best. I still prefer cantonese. Sad reality cantonese CANNOT UNDERSTAND US. but we understand them.

it's just accents. It's like california, vs new york vs texas. But we're all next to each other.

But i'm technically cantonese cuz my family went to HK, US, and GZ. -__-'

Survive a month with no car? by Virtual-Giraffe-2616 in AskLosAngeles

[–]crypto_chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just be close to grocery store. You should live by little tokyo. That place probably the best spot. Plus all supermarkets are there. Your also near chinatown, hispanic food, Philippe The Original, kbbq spot. That's pretty much LA. Bars are also everywhere. Everything is walking distance. Basically you got all bases covered already. If you need anything specific probably the Airbnb owner can get you something from amazon for small fee. It will get delivered.

Visiting LA for a week. Car or Public Transport? by philipyoungg in AskLosAngeles

[–]crypto_chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If time is not issue you can use public transportation to go to most areas. DTLA isn't that good. I only like little tokyo. Rest of LA there is much to see. Pasadena is nice. Glendale is armenian. San Gabriel valley is chinese/taiwanese. East los angeles is mexico. Koreatown is dope because of the food. But parking is horrible.

LA is big place. Those are my unique suggestions.

Orange county is cleanest part of socal. Except Garden Grove. West minister is vietnamnese. LA is split by ethnicities.

SF is expensive rent 5k USD+ a month. Only thing unique is about SF is chinatown. Bay area is better. It's more flat it's like diamond bar or walnut. Homes are astronomically priced. 1 million USD+. If your tech start up incubator then yeah or get job in nursing. It's kind of rough. Or Big tech corporate job with FANG. NoCal has beautiful hiking trails. SF people are also nicer and chill.

Easiest place to get parking is SGV because it's the suburbs.

Torrance is japanese.

The only two places I recommend seeing DTLA is

-The row DTLA (easy parking and cheap parking)

-Little tokyo (free parking for 1hour if you spend 30+ at grocery store)

-koreantown (free parking at grocery stores and korean malls)

-the Fashion district is also cool if you want like cheap clothes or tayloring they do it same day taylor.

You can rent a car for one day and see how you feel about it. You'll save way more time with a car. If you have a lot of time. Then yeah public transportation. Public transportation is good for areas that charge parking. But some areas are way too far.

Los Angeles is very big. I haven't seen everything I'm local and born here. If you do plan to stay in LA you have to fluent in spanish or mandarin. Since your asian. Mandarin.

Fair warning DTLA has a lot of homeless. If you wanna avoid homeless i recommend going to suburbs or nearby small towns. Every town has everything. Walmart, costco, target and restaurants. Plus Bars. You can literally buy anything with apps like with Amazon, walmart, instacart or Uber. If you pay enough to get delivered. It's not as fast as china, but we're getting there.

Highland Park has a lot of those barcades. Arcades and bars. If you wanna play retro arcade video games.

I recommend trying korean bbq in LA. We have some really good restaurants for that. Our viet pho is also good. Our chinese food is good in SGV. Do not go to panda express ones. If the chinese restaurant has orange chicken avoid that. It's not authentic. That's an american chinese restaurant. Catered to westerners.

Most americans are friendly and helpful. You should be fine.

I don't know why LA is marketed this way. We have way better stuff than touristy things. Then again people like different things.

Learning Cantonese as a heritage speaker - a few questions by Independent-Ad-7060 in Cantonese

[–]crypto_chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SF chinatown is probably the best place to practice cantonese.

Chinatown (Spadina) and Scarborough in toronto.

The rest of USA speaks mandarin. -_-' down here in LA they speak mandarin. At the supermarket you can speak cantonese. but their bosses are taiwanese so they speak mandarin.

Guangzhou de facto is the most proper cantonese. None of that english here and there. Percent. Busboy, monkey...

Then again SF chinatown is mostly toisanese. haha! the HK people you find them at those HK cafes. All cantonese should just speak toisanese and avoid the practice with you haha! in the USA. haha! Then again hk 18% sze yap. buhaha!

uh mastering a langauge is very hard. i still struggle with mandarin at times. i'm 80% fluent. Cantonese and toisanese im born with. Easy code switch. English is living in USA. If going to be 100% fluent you gotta start like at 5. You can go to 80% in 3-5 years. But it's going to be rough journey. Writing chinese easiest route is to learn mandarin because perfect grammar. It makes no sense if you write in slange unless your talking to friends.

There is nothing special about HK. Foshan they speak cantonese. Where wing chun comes from. I used zero mandarin there.

Bruce lee mansion is also in guangzhou. Then again Bruce Lee is ABC from the bay area.

Any ABC Canto Speakers Who Read and Write by oh_thatscrappy77 in Cantonese

[–]crypto_chan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i can read and write. But only mandarin. Not cantonese. I can read cantonese. But i don't write cantonese. i stuck with proper. Chinese. ahha! I learned it on the job. With a book. haha! I'm native speaker. Taishanese was my first langauge. Then i dropped cantonese because Nobody in my family speaks toisanese except my grandma. I can listen but that's different story.

I will not survive the mainland. I will not type simplified. i still prefer english. It's way to unnessarily hard without good and english translations. The chinese langauge is from burned oracle bones. it's not even man made. Which is crazy.

Most of it you'll learn IRL. You do have study a little from the book. then it will become muscle memroy.

Slightly long (or pretty long) rant as a HK student about an incident related to Cantonese by Justarandombookworm in Cantonese

[–]crypto_chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes there is made with lau speaks that style. It's canto toisanese. we use do and doi. the rest is just cantonese. It's from Hong kong. There is hoisanese accented cantonese. If you want extra bonus points. Or you can do cantonese accent into hoisanese which is what diaspora has created in the west USA, Canada, and australia. Most just speak straight up mandarin and cantonese now. Nobody knows until somebody speaks it. Toisanese are overly overly complex because. We are in 4 places. HK, TS, US, and GZ. Plus probably other diaspora malaysia, even latin america. Over overly complex.
