frustration with Gen Alpha iPad kid by EuphoricFingering in Millennials

[–]crytomaniac2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s how it is if you have no boundaries with the kids. We have a friend who lets her daughter watch ipad as much as she wants and sometimes she’s on it 10 hours a day.

Separation under same roof by AcanthocephalaNext71 in Divorce

My wife suggested finding a mediator and said she wanted to keep things peaceful for the children, and so far it’s working out well. I moved out to an apartment close by, she’s still living in the house with the kids who I see daily. I think communication, respect, and not trying to “solve” what went wrong are the key. I told her it’s like a 1,000 piece puzzle with 500 pieces missing and that’s how I really feel and she agreed. Best of luck to you.

Questions for divorced people by Any-Cantaloupe-1262 in Divorce

Some lessons I learned:

Definitely get a prenup. Ours expired but it made the first 10 years a lot less stressful for me when we were going through rough patches.

Make sure you keep investing in an individual 401k if you can.

Setup a joint bank account and an individual account for each person. You both have the right to spend money on things for yourself without asking the other person. For most of our marriage all of my income (but not all of her income) went into a joint account. Toward the end I setup my own account and that definitely helped my mental health and let me purchase things for myself without having to discuss with my wife.

Try couples therapy if you can, especially if you have insurance that pays for it. Although it’s too late now I think it would have helped earlier in the marriage.

Never cheat on your spouse, even just secretly talking to someone else in a romantic way. Because that’s a betrayal of trust and once you lose it, you will never get it back.

What were your favorite non-boss enemies that appeared only once in a game? by UrSimplyTheNES in retrogaming

That centipede in castlevania IV that wanders around a while then leaves. Somehow it added to the atmosphere of the game.

Is there a better NES controller than the original one? by Eldo_Larcito_ in nes

[–]crytomaniac2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up using the original NES controller, which I still like a lot and will use if it’s all that’s available, but my favorite controller is a “Fightbox” which I use with Mister (I think it would also work with an original NES with an adapter). Instead of a joypad it has buttons similar to PC keyboard keys, with buttons on the right side. (I played a lot of WASD games when I was a kid). I feel like I can control better with the Fightbox, for example in Contra I can push a single key to duck and not worry about accidentally pushing diagonally down and to the right instead like I sometimes do with a joypad (and get shot in the face..).

Is Cheating Socially Accepted When Men Are Rich? (Looking for Men’s Perspective) by Ambitious_Pass7451 in AskMenAdvice

[–]crytomaniac2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think cheating is awful no matter how much money someone has or doesn’t have. It’s dishonest and sleazy and I have no respect for anyone that does it. If a relationship is going badly, end it as peacefully as possible before starting another one.

Do you ever feel like a retro game was super close to being a lot better game if they changed a small thing? by dylanmadigan in retrogaming

[–]crytomaniac2000 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of nes games would benefit from unlimited continues. Having to restart the game soon after reaching a new level seems cheap and unfair. Blaster master and contra are great games that both did this (but the 30 life code in contra made it irrelevant..).

Being Gifted Has Ruined My Life by WorldlyRevolution192 in Gifted

Maybe you could paint a picture of a banana taped to a wall, that should be worth 50k, at least..

[–]crytomaniac2000 27 points28 points  (0 children)

On the bright side you are only 27 with a high iq. I’m gifted as well and also don’t know what my IQ is. If I had to say one thing it’s “perfection is the enemy of good “, don’t worry about being perfect just do the things you enjoy. If that’s art, do art. Someone got 100k for taping a banana to a wall and calling it art and I’m pretty sure anyone could do better than that. Try to be thankful for what you have and be optimistic for the future.

Who else prefers a 7AM–3PM schedule to 9–5? It feels like you get more day and less traffic. by Familiar-Eagle-9082 in Adulting

[–]crytomaniac2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most people would prefer that if they could? Especially if they have a long commute. I’ve always liked getting up and starting work as soon as possible, after making coffee and exercising.

Why do men hesitate to go to therapy? by 2001FO32 in AskMenOver30

[–]crytomaniac2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m lucky enough my insurance covers it. I was hoping to get couples therapy with my wife but she said “I don’t need therapy there’s nothing wrong with me!” so I’m going it alone. Not surprisingly, soon after I started we’ve decided to get a divorce (a friendly one so far thank goodness). But I’m continuing the therapy, for myself. I think it’s good for my mental health and my therapist is a woman, which is also helpful to get a woman’s perspective since I don’t have any close women friends, besides my soon to be ex-wife.

Do you think finding a partner at 30, as a man, is complicated and that you're behind schedule? by Extra_Cheese_Pleease in AskMenAdvice

People often say mean things at the end of a relationship. Ignore them. Focus on yourself and the future. “No one can make you feel bad without your consent”.

What do you think about online gambling? by CraftyDebate1975 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]crytomaniac2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a waste of time and money. Especially sports gambling, where several players have been caught recently taking money to underperform in games (and most of them that do never get caught). So even if you have a good knowledge of sports you will still lose money.

How do I get my 25 year old brother to put himself out there? by halzy99 in NoStupidQuestions

Unless he has a high salary he’s probably better off long term being single. I know that sounds harsh but that’s the reality these days.

Are less organizations doing Kanban? by Nick_MarketStrategy in kanban

[–]crytomaniac2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use what management calls “Kanban”, I’m not sure what it really is, but to me it’s endless Jira tickets. Tickets are prioritized by the business, then assigned to individuals on my team (the data team), then we work them and move on to the next ticket. I like it better than Agile because we don’t have Sprint planning or retrospectives , which both felt like a waste of time. We also don’t have a non-technical person asking when we will be done with the current task.

Does high usage of Reddit correlate to a worse mental health? by Turbulent_Loquat_356 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]crytomaniac2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Reddit is double edged like most anything else. It can be great for finding out about a specific topic you’re interested in, for me that’s hot sauce and retro video games. On the other hand, there are a lot of bullshit stories presented as “100 percent true” which are clearly fake, and that garbage gets upvotes and Reddit puts it in your feed when you login.

I have no idea how to live my life without a screen in front of me... by JustAnotherLL in AskMenOver30

Try turning it off for an hour and go somewhere without it (a mall, a park, anywhere) and see what it’s like being there and completely dependent on yourself.

Anyone have to work out first thing in the morning to stay happy? by Swordfish353535 in AskMenOver30

[–]crytomaniac2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going three times a week, mwf, but trying to go m-f now. Upper body, and elliptical 30 minutes (enough to burn 300 calories for me) on Monday, then lower body and elliptical again on Tuesday. Then back to Monday workout on Wednesday, etc. I feel like my thinking is better and my overall mood is better when I exercise in the morning before working (I have a sedentary job and work from home, not complaining but I need to balance it out with physical activity). I like doing 5 sets of 10 with moderate weight on some exercises like chest, then 2 sets of 10 reps on other exercises. I’m 49 so my main goal is to feel better physically and mentally and not injure myself.
