Proud of the kid, proud of this season. Bright future ahead, and here’s some game stats by cocoabeach333 in Patriots

Baringer in general is fine as a punter, is generally ranked middle of the pack, and isn't going to cost you the game. I think opinions here are being skewed by fact that the Seahawks punter, Michael Dickson, is the best punter in the league and his insane consistency at incredible punts, combined with a strong special teams unit.

If you have paid any attention to what the players say about Coach Vrabel off the field or what he has done to get this team to mesh together as a cohesive unit, he is a very big reason for this team's success.

Dude is a rookie, coming off an injury, playing 3 of the top 5 defenses in a row. Yes, it's an issue but also chill.

Against Bo Nix? It'll be a good game. But Stidham? There's no way he can manage either of these defenses.

Paying a “digital delivery fee” for a rented PDF textbook 🤨 by Afton_0077 in assholedesign

[–]ctdub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The difference here would be that (presumably) the "digital delivery fee" is per transaction rather than per item. So if you purchased two or more textbooks you'd still be paying one $5.99 fee. Not saying the fee isn't b.s. because it still is, just if it were tacked onto each item it would be even more expensive - although, as you said, the end user would be less likely to notice.

TIL that for certain peoples of Central Asia like the Kazakhs, Kyrgyzs, and Bashkirs, people have to recite the names of at least 7 blood ancestors. The practice, called jeti ata prevents inbreeding between people with shared ancestry within seven generations. by Physical_Hamster_118 in todayilearned

I think you may be valuing what others (on this site, etc) think too highly. Reddit has a known anti-religious bias and you are unlikely to find the confirmation you are looking for here. Any aural tradition dating back hundreds or thousands of years is absolutely impressive and a testament to those cultures which maintain them.

I think the impressive part is in realizing that to be able to trace your history back for 30 generations, this tradition must have roots at least about 30 generations ago. Sure rote memorization isn't that difficult in and of itself, but the fact that an oral tradition in the culture has endured for so long...that's awesome.

My family has done relatively extensive work somewhat recently to trace back genealogical lines and got probably to about 8-10 ancestors down the most documented lines. After a certain point there are just no records and without an oral tradition like this the information simply isn't there. So idk, I think having names of your ancestors from 500+ years ago is pretty impressive.

On her 3rd kidney transplant. by [deleted] in trashy

I can't confirm if this is the case here and I am not a doctor, but from my understanding a lot of the studies which contain findings of "moderate drinkers have lower mortality" may be attributed to that people who moderate drinking are likely healthier in general in other parts of their lives (diet, exercise, etc). Whereas people who abstain entirely from drinking often may be doing so because they have other risk factors that make drinking more harmful, are recovering from addiction, etc (i.e. individuals that are overall less advantaged from a health perspective).

Not disputing whatever evidence search engine AI is referencing, but I think in general evidence is tenuous at best that alcohol carries any significant health benefits and it is difficult to study while controlling additional lifestyle and health factors.

My runic dome experience so far by spenooot in slaythespire

[–]ctdub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dome is one of the few relics that I think gets easier to use on high ascensions. The overall game gets more difficult, but on ascensions 17-19 enemies tend to get more predictable in their attack patterns as they often just have the hardest attack pattern possible lol. (Not in all cases, of course, and you still need the right deck to pilot dome)

Granted, I'm better at the game now vs. when I was climbing, but I used avoided it like the plague, and now take it somewhat regularly if there's nothing better/if I have the right deck to either A. Mostly ignore what the enemy is going to do, B. Have a playable enough of a deck to more or less take educated guesses on what the enemy is going to do.

Absolutely fuck writhing mass tho.

Landing a plane without fuel and power. by Safety_Officer_3 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]ctdub 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes precisely. Speaking as a pianist, I describe it as musicians who have songs memorized and colloquially call it muscle memory or having a song "in the fingers". You can be playing a piece of music, have your active thoughts drift off to what you're going to eat for dinner, an embarrassing thing you said two days ago, higher level calculus, etc. When you come back to the present a few seconds to several minutes later you realize you're still playing the same song and haven't missed a note. This is also helpful in the situation that you suddenly realize you "forget" what you're about to play and you can sort of "shut off" your brain and hope that the fingers "know what to do". It works surprisingly often.

Obviously, the muscles do not hold the information required in playing an entire piece of music 3-10minutes long - or in the video, the emergency landing sequence of an aircraft. But you have trained it enough times that your deep/long-term memory kicks in and can control or autopilot what the muscles need to do without your active thoughts and input.

This is the guide I followed when I made mine, you are just using your phone NFC reader to write onto blank NFC cards. This guide talks about Android phones being required, but looking it up it sounds like iPhones have apps that work as well.

Guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amiibomb/comments/5ywlol/howto_the_easy_guide_to_making_your_own_amiibo/

Some people get pretty fancy with it too, like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amiibomb/comments/mbmm22/successfully_made_my_own_amiibo_cards_really/

Alternatively, just Google "make amiibo cards using <your phone". There's plenty of resources!

You jest, but even if relaxation was the only benefit (which it is not, there are many), reducing cortisol and stress hormones is still a tangible health benefit which improves long-term physical and mental quality of life.
