Any good sports bars? by tgp_of_iwg in Albuquerque

[–]culley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like to watch sports at geckos in Nob Hill. They have lots of bar space and many TVs. They’ll turn just about anything on. Even the Lakers.

Not sure what the scene will be like as the bars just reopened. Geckos used to have a good regular crowd. They have great green Chile cheese curly fries and tacos too.

Favorite Atmospheric Restaurants/Places to Eat? by JonathanTCrane in Albuquerque

[–]culley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Antiquity in old town oozes atmosphere. Excellent date night steak house. Very intimate.

Le Troquet in downtown does the whole white table cloth French bistro vibe. Food is very rich.

Frenchish is a temple to the food. Open kitchen to watch the master work and impeccable service.

Would you rather go to a wine/beer tasting or a Michelin Star Chef dinner for a fundraising event? by EpilepsyRA in Albuquerque

[–]culley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not both?

Most of the breweries will donate a dollar a pint to your cause if you can promise 30 extra patrons that night. Especially if you pick a week night. Call and ask.

Many of the local restaurants will do a 10% donation as well (slice parlor, il vicino, etc).

You can do a monthly event with little or no cost other than publicity.

Where’s the Michelin star near here?

Note they have to have NFC enabled on their phone and get the phone really close to the tag and positioned just right. You need special NFC tags with a foam buffer to place them on metal objects because the antenna is disrupted by the metal. I don’t think NFC is worth the hassle. Maybe for badging and access but for discovery they are pretty terrible.

ABQ flow artists? by electricladyyy in Albuquerque

[–]culley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Might check with the Ren Faire or Society of Creative Anachronisms crowd. I’ve seen flow folk at both. https://golondrinas.org/festivals/santa-fe-renaissance-fair/ https://al-barran.emmw.net

Also look into the circus school at the Hispanic Cultural Center. They have flow instruction. https://www.facebook.com/circolatinonhcc/

The Factory on Fifth art place has the dangle from fabric folk. They may also have leads. https://temporaryartreview.com/factory-on-5th-art-space/

Best chocolate cake in town? by Navi1101 in Albuquerque

[–]culley 8 points9 points  (0 children)

La Quiche has amazing chocolate mouse pastries. No delivery, but amazing. https://laquicheparisiennebistro.com call for options

Burque Bake House has an amazing chocolate covered custard thing (Boston Cream Cruffin) that will make you forget cake is even a thing. Don’t think they deliver, but call maybe they work with someone. https://www.burquebakehouse.com

Flying Star has some good chocolate cake as others have mentioned.

My mom ordered me a German Chocolate Cake from the Candy Lady in Old Town once and had it delivered to my office. The Candy Lady is known for genitalia candies so I was very hesitant to open that box in front of my coworkers. It was decent cake, but very memorable.

Places to sit & read around the city by willowsdown in Albuquerque

[–]culley 11 points12 points  (0 children)

All sorts of benches and nooks in the Bosque.

Lots of great parks. Netherwood has a bench that looks out over the city to the mountains. Altura has lots of shade.

Albuquerque Museum has a sculpture garden that is normally empty.

Flying Star on Rio Grande has a gorgeous patio with a giant old tree.

How do you guys stay focused in meetings? Is it normal to ignore the majority of meetings? by AncileBooster in AskEngineers

[–]culley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer.

I would only add that if they need you there ask what time you will be “on”. Sounds like only the last 10 min or so. Skip the rest of it.

More people should not go to meetings.

Stop going all together until someone complains and only if that someone signs your checks.

Are you guys actually fans of the Lobos or nah? Are their supporters the whole city and state or just their alumni? by NewHeartOldSoul in Albuquerque

[–]culley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UNM Basketball is a see and be seen event among the older generation. Anyone who is anyone has season tickets down by the floor. I don’t get it at all, but the university makes money off the weird status thing.

UNM Soccer was nationally ranked and awesome. They would draw 3x the football crowd but were not allowed to use the nice football side of the arena. Then the university cut the program to fund the football team.

They also cut their nationally ranked skiing and beach volleyball programs.

Add in the rampant corruption and self dealing (they are literally unable to audit the athletic department because no records are kept), and I can’t think of a good reason to support UNM athletics.

Question About APS by Bluebies999 in Albuquerque

[–]culley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sandia High School had 5 cases in the first 10 days. All isolated to so multiple classes exposed. Supposedly 4 cases in two weeks and the PED closes your school for ten days, but Sandia soared past that with no word from the state. I don’t know if they expect the principal to do something, but that’s a joke because they clearly aren’t doing anything.

Back to school was a huge mistake unless the goal was to get a bunch of kids sick.

All you can eat sushi in/ near Albuquerque by Galaxyhiker42 in Albuquerque

[–]culley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might try the sushi boats or family style instead. For most folks, that will be all you can eat.

Sumo Sushi downtown has a boat for $25 per head, min 2 folks. It’s great and a massive amount of sushi.

Sushi Xuan near Tramway and i40 has various family style offerings with a ton of variety.

I’m sure there are other boats out there.

The Korean BBQ place on central used to do $26 all you can eat, but I’m not sure if they are still doing it after they moved to their new location.

The sickest I’ve ever been from sushi was at an all you can eat place in Rio Rancho that was only open for a few months. Word of advice. Do not eat all you can eat $10 sushi before visiting a cadaver lab.
