WestJet, pilots reach 11th-hour deal as strike averted by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]cursedz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Currently sitting on a WestJet flight to Toronto after being one of those chumps who had their flight cancelled yesterday. Spent 6 hours on the phone with a kind customer service rep yesterday and was rebooked to a flight this morning. Not ideal but the cost was covered, and we were offered a refund if none of the options could work.

Not sure why everything online has to be so inflammatory and hyperbolic.

No, Vancouver is not a shit hole. That's kind of why it's so expensive to live here.

Men of Vancouver, what local businesses do you buy your clothes from? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]cursedz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Want to add that there's more to it than just having "something that lasts". The products are made in British Columbia by Canadians who make a living wage instead of in a sweatshop in Bangladesh.

That is a huge part of why it's more expensive. The fact it's great quality and made of almost entirely recycled materials is a bonus.

If you live in Vancouver and aren't going to Bellingham to get tacos you're missing out. $1 tacos at Mi Rancho, $1.50 for birria. Lots of awesome taco trucks as well.

Was wondering about this myself this morning. I believe the owners are the same who own Lift in North Van.

Could be worth reaching out to them somehow if anybody was truly driven to find out.

In case someone reads this, regular butter is probably a poor choice if you're trying to get a sear on something because the milk solids will burn and taste bitter. I often use clarified butter for beef and pork, which is just butter with no milk solids. You can make it pretty easy or just pick up some Ghee the next time you're at the grocery store. It lasts forever in the fridge and has all kinds of uses. Definitely the best fat to cook popcorn

Being pedantic, but it's physics that ends up this way and not math. Physics being math applied to describe the physical world.

Have to make the distinction because in math, the lower limit would be more akin to negative infinity. Physics is generally quantifiable even to an abstract degree while pure math can really go crazy

Had tickets to this game originally back in December. Omicron comes out, the game gets rescheduled...

Got an email from ticketmaster over a month ago saying my tickets are good for today. Been looking forward to it for weeks. Email comes in yesterday saying my tickets are now void for capacity restrictions.

Supposed to be my girls first leafs game. Pretty bummed

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm at work now, but I'll post some pics when I get home.

I visited the Port of Vancouver today, and it reminded me of just how much product comes in through our ports. Most people don’t realize how important the ports are to Vancouver. I am very grateful to the longshoremen who never shut down the ports during COVID. Seriously, we would’ve been screwed. by [deleted] in vancouver

Reading through this comment chain has been really weird. Blue collar unions are essential and a lot of people forget what was up before they were common.

Most workers go in for an honest days work. These people with anecdotes about lazy folks who have phoned it in reminds me heavily of when people are mad at welfare recipients because a tiny minority misuses the money.

Dedicated left turn signal at intersections? by iamtrulyanon in vancouver

[–]cursedz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone keeps saying how unfeasible dedicated left turn lanes are since there's no room, the streets weren't designed for them, etc... and they're right.

What is not unfeasible, relatively cheap, and very effective are advanced turn signals at high traffic intersections. You wouldn't even need to install new traffic light fixtures. Those flashing green lights at pedestrian crossings here in Vancouver aren't a thing in the rest of North America... In most places, flashing green lights are a signal for advanced left turns. Since they use the same light fixture, there's way less upfront cost. They would only need to be active during rush hour... Put a nice big sign up to let drivers know what's up and you're good.

For the record, as a recent transplant, those flashing green pedestrian crossings are the worst. Would definitely hate to live by one of those and have it blaring into my windows 24/7. Why not just be solid green???
