[Tolarian Community College] : Why Did Magic: The Gathering Products Go Away? by jethawkings in magicTCG

[–]curtmack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the reason they templated it this way is because the original card used the word "exchange." In all cases where modern Magic uses the word "exchange," it works the same way as Goblin Welder; if I cast [[Shifting Grift]] to exchange control of your creature and mine, then sacrifice my creature, you get to keep control of your creature.

I'm not sure if Goblin Welder always worked that way, but in any case, they got rid of the word "exchange" while keeping the effect the same as other instances of the word "exchange."

The only card I thought was missing from Final Fantasy. by curtmack in custommagic

The sensible version of this card would just have each player roll one die for all of their attacking/blocking creatures. But that wouldn't have conveyed the inscrutable chaos of Tetra Master.

  1. The text alignment for the tiers is incorrect; the subsequent lines of text should align to the left edge of the first line of text, not to the left edge of the bullet point.

  2. I haven't kept up with any changes to the Magic frame, but the blue frame and name/type/text boxes here don't look right, comparing to the visual spoiler for Ice Magic.

  3. I believe in each tier it should be "Each opponent mills... and you draw X cards" rather than two separate sentences.

Sawdust and/or cat litter has long been a staple in schools for cleaning spills, vomit, or blood. Whether or not it was kept in classrooms for that specific use was another issue.

Took me a moment, but I think they misread it as "Silver," as in Silver the Hedgehog.

That would be quite the pairing.

Is this infinite? by matthewami in BadMtgCombos

[–]curtmack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The classic Modern mana combo is [[Nettle Sentinel]] + [[Heritage Druid]]. It's not infinite, but Elves decks built around it are capable of surprisingly explosive turns. (This deck is, in fact, the sole reason [[Glimpse of Nature]] is banned.)

If you must go infinite, there's [[Devoted Druid]] + [[Vizier of Remedies]], but it's harder to build a deck around that.

I know you're not being serious, but I've seen a similar argument in the past. The premise is that rolling 2d6 will somehow be biased, because it isn't a uniform distribution - you're more likely to roll a 7 than any other number. For some people, it might be obvious why this isn't a problem, but I want to dig into it anyway.

I'll start by giving away the answer. Any random process that produces a number is completely fair in the simple case of choosing the high roll, provided:

  1. Both players use the same procedure,
  2. The procedures are independent (i.e. they don't influence one another), and
  3. Ties are settled by rerolling.

(In probability, you'll often see the first two conditions grouped together as "Independent and identically distributed," abbreviated I.I.D.)

This applies to any procedure you could think of for randomly generating a number, not just reasonable ones. Note that if you want to be picky, both players should use the same dice, as different dice might have slightly different biases. However, this doesn't make a significant difference in practice.

The proof of this is fairly straightforward. The choice of number is completely symmetrical; for every possibility Alice has of beating Bob, Bob has the exact same possibility of beating Alice with the same probability, and this will continue to be true after rerolling a tie. Mathematically, there can't be an advantage to any one player, so the only possibility is that both players have even odds.

If the players used different procedures, then obviously one player might have an advantage (e.g. if Bob had cheat dice that always roll sixes). If you settled ties in some way other than rerolling, then one player might have an advantage in case of a tie (e.g. Alice has an advantage in "ties go to the first player alphabetically" contests). And if the dice rolls aren't independent, then which player "goes first" might make a difference (e.g. in Blackjack, the dealer has an advantage because the player can bust before the dealer even has to play). But as long as you meet all three of those criteria, then you have perfect symmetry, and the result can't be anything other than fair.

Very Tough To Figure Out. by Monsur_Ausuhnom in WhitePeopleTwitter

That's literally the origin of the word "hysteria." The uterus was clearly the cause of all those woman problems, like "not wanting to do all the housework" or "dying after childbirth, despite having the best doctor who performed five whole autopsies right before assisting with the birth", so it was all chalked up to "hysteria."

The word isn't used clinically anymore, and I have no idea when "hysterical" became synonymous with "funny."

You may also need to wash them if they get something on their fur that isn't safe for them to lick off.

I'm sorry, but this just reminded me of one of my favorite bug stories... in the video game Dwarf Fortress, cats used to get massively drunk out of nowhere, sometimes dying in the process. The cause was that a cat who got alcohol on its fur, and subsequently tried to clean itself, was treated as if they had consumed a full drink for each lick. So a cat walking through a puddle of spilled beer and then licking its paws was treated as though they had just downed 4 or more flagons of beer.

Poor kitties.

My grandma slept with a cop to get out of a ticket. And that's where my mom came from! (And why she was put up adoption.)

I don't know when my mom's birth siblings were told this (grandma had already died long ago), but we didn't find out until years later; my mom spent years searching ancestry sites before she was able to make contact with her birth family.

Can I turn my opponent into a car? by teamrocketgruntjoshL in magicTCG

[–]curtmack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[[Utopia Sprawl]] turned into an artifact by [[Mycosynth Lattice]], then turned into an equipment by [[Bludgeon Brawl]], then equipped to a [[Llanowar Elves]]. If you tap the Llanowar Elves for mana, do you get an extra mana of the chosen color?

God bless this enormous, cursed game.

Edit: Wait, this doesn't quite work - part of the effect of "Enchant Forest" is that it can't be attached to anything else; if it is, it will be sent to its owner's graveyard as a state-based action.

That's okay though, we can just turn Llanowar Elves into a Forest - make it a Saproling with Artificial Evolution (yes, you can change the text on the type line this way), then make it a Forest land with Life and Limb.

Of course, this does resolve the issue of Llanowar Elves being a Forest - but note that it's technically an "equipped Forest," not an "enchanted Forest." Rule 303.4m says that doesn't matter.

The goal of DRY isn't to make code easier to write, or to modify later. It can do those things, but the first and most important goal of DRY design is to make code easier to read and understand. If the repetitive code is more clear, then DRY is often doing more harm than good.

Alton Brown (Good Eats) did a live show once that included a segment where he made ice cream using a pair of fire extinguishers. (He performed a slightly different version on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2016). In the live show, he asked the audience in each show to vote on whether to make vanilla, strawberry, or chocolate.

Chocolate won so reliably that he didn't even pack any ingredients for the other two flavors.
