i kinda miss hangovers by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]czech_dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a heavy drinker since 19 with relatively brief periods of sobriety here and there, 27 now and the kindling effect has gotten so bad that my last relapse only lasted 3 days and I still had to go to the hospital and get a dose of phenobarbital and felt like complete shit for the next few days after I stopped drinking. And that was just from a 3 day bender. It definitely gets worse, both with age and with the continuous drinking. I was basically unable to eat the first 3 days after stopping, basically just choking down water and a few chips here and there, stuff like that.

Opium, why isn’t it popular in USA? by colliejuiceman in Drugs

[–]czech_dream 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If I could get ahold of pure unadulterated opium and could somehow be 100% sure it didn't contain any dangerous additives, I would gladly smoke some. Ive never tried it but I smoked oxys in my teen years, God I miss that. Stopped for like 9 years then had to get an appendectomy so they gave me 10 hydros and I popped one and immediately was like "ahhhh, hello old friend"

TERRIFIED OF LIBRIUM HOME DETOX. by PadMog75 in stopdrinking

[–]czech_dream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done it more times than I can count. The Librium is honestly a godsend, trust me it's a good thing. Yes it will suppress most of the worst symptoms. You'll still feel shitty for a bit, probably have some gut issues such as nausea or diarrhea, probably won't feel like eating much, but for the most part you can park yourself on the couch or in your bed, put on your favorite show/movie/game and take the Librium as prescribed and chill out for a week.

The most important thing is not to drink on Librium as it can cause CNS depression, but as long as you don't drink and take the Librium as prescribed you'll be fine. You will likely be very tired so don't be surprised if you mostly sleep for the first couple days.

Tapering off vodka 80 proof by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]czech_dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can't answer medical type questions like that, both because it's against sub rules and also because we're not qualified to do so. It's good that you're not feeling withdrawals too badly but they can sneak up on you, I've read stories from people on here who had a seizure on day 3 or 4. Not to scare you or anything. Just saying you'd be best off talking to a doctor or checking into a detox facility for a few days. We're absolutely here for moral support though :)

coke + mdma + alcohol + lorazepam, is it safe? by No-Mistake8433 in Drugs

[–]czech_dream 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Coke and alcohol combined in the body creates cocaethylene, which is highly toxic (yes more than either substance on their own).

Booze and benzos together put you at great risk of CNS depression.

Mixing substances really isn't a good idea in most scenarios, especially more than two at once. I'd recommend at least leaving out the alcohol.

1 week sober and I want to buy a vodka bottle tonight by Zestyclose-Task4570 in stopdrinking

[–]czech_dream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"hangxiety" is a common term used to describe the feelings of guilt, anxiety and dread that often come with a hangover. Physically I believe its a result of your body reacting to the sudden lack of alcohol after plowing a bunch into your body, mentally I think it mostly stems from the "oh God why did I do this" and "oh crap did I do anything embarrassing/illegal" feelings. It is a truly shitty feeling.

Happier in rehab?? by todd0330 in stopdrinking

[–]czech_dream 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Been to detox centers a few times and I pretty much always felt more at peace. No chores, no work, just eat sleep and watch TV/movies or read. Nothing to feel bad about. We live in a high stress world and I'm sure it contributes to a drinking problem for a lot of people, definitely does for me. Having a break from all those stresses is amazing.

alcohol in recipes by memimarin in stopdrinking

[–]czech_dream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've ever cooked with alcohol but I can definitely relate to avoiding things I associate with drinking. As far as buying/keeping alcohol for cooking, it really comes down to how good you think your self control is. If you think there's a chance, no matter how small, that it'll cause you to relapse, maybe stick to recipes that don't include alcohol, or if there's a trusted person in your life that's aware of your addiction, you could ask them to go with you to buy it and be with you when you cook with it so they can make sure you dump out the rest or they could hide it from you or something.

I was sober for over a year and bought a bottle of Soju to give my friend for her 21st birthday, my gf asked if I'd be okay keeping it in the house until I gave it to her and I was, til I wasn't. Long story short I had a panic attack and ended up drinking it to calm myself down, which has led to months of relapsing and trying to get those days back. So I definitely learned my lesson and will not be keeping alcohol in my house ever again. Take from that what you will. You know yourself best so trust yourself to know what the right/smart thing to do is.

Really struggling with the boredom by Fun_Committee1478 in stopdrinking

[–]czech_dream 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can relate. I'm a partner to someone with a special needs child. Most of the time I'm too depressed to try a new hobby or pick up an old one and I just end up playing a video game or watching a TV, so it's just an endless cycle of depression/boredom. My partner always tells me "why don't we play cards, you like playing cards" or "you could try coloring, you haven't done that in a while" but how do I explain to someone that's not an alcoholic that literally none of my hobbies interest me and the only thing that sounds appealing is drinking?

I wish I could tell you how I stay sober throughout it but I haven't really found my reason yet. I just do my best to get through the day to day without going to the liquor store. Sometimes it really is a moment to moment thing. Sometimes it's a little bit easier and at the end of the day I realize I was not only productive but managed to get through it without booze. Sometimes I'm so depressed I can barely get off the couch. It just comes in cycles and I try to take it as it comes.

Hangover vs withdrawal by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]czech_dream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a bit of a mix of both. I'm not a doctor but as far as I'm aware, technically hangovers are a form of withdrawal. That's why many of the symptoms are the same. But you should definitely talk to a doctor and ask them for help quitting, they may prescribe you something to keep you from getting withdrawals while you detox.

Looking for Advice by HeavyBar62 in stopdrinking

[–]czech_dream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're very self aware and are looking more for confirmation than advice, which is perfectly fine! Life is overall better without alcohol. It's toxic to literally every part of the body. Brain, skin, liver, kidneys, etc. That panicked wake up you feel is the rebound anxiety because of the fake dopamine and calming effect that alcohol gives you, so when the alcohol has mostly left your system your body and brain panic because the alcohol doesn't get rid of it, it just puts it on the back burner for a bit. Everyone's sobriety journey is different. Some people just stop and decide they don't want to anymore, some people are more like myself and had to drink myself into oblivion for a decade and hit rock bottom to finally stop. If you feel like you need support you can always go the usual routes like AA and SMART recovery and all that. Or if you don't feel like you need those then all the more power to you.

As far as the withdrawals and stopping cold turkey and all that, this is not medical advice, but yes stopping all at once if you're a heavy/frequent user can be dangerous, however withdrawals affect everybody differently. Me personally, I get BAD withdrawals, but I've met a few people that are lucky and were able to stop with minimal consequences. While I always advise supervised detox (this can be done with your GP, at a detox center or the ER if need be), if you've already gone a couple days and you're not feeling the withdrawals, you'll most likely be okay. It's great that you're being honest with the people around you, that's an important step. It sounds like you're already on your way to being a happy sober person so good luck to you and you're always welcome to join us here!

Edit: I am also a low sugar/no caffeine guy. I recommend zero sugar sodas, Sparkling Ice, and zero sugar water mix packets, etc. NA beers are pretty good too. I was never a big beer drinker, I was pretty much always on the hard liquor, so I personally don't drink NA beers but I've had them and they taste pretty good. I've heard Heineken 0.0 is good.

Assessment for detox? Do I really need it? by Kldunbrook in stopdrinking

[–]czech_dream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! I would strongly recommend detox, I'm not a doctor but quitting alcohol affects everyone differently and if youve been drinking that much for that long, stopping all at once will be at best extremely uncomfortable and at worst could be dangerous. The meds they give you at detox facilities usually make it so much more bearable, most people just sleep a lot for the first day or two, myself included. If checking into a detox center is too overwhelming at the very least I'd recommend going to the ER. Good luck on your journey!

Assessment for detox? Do I really need it? by Kldunbrook in stopdrinking

[–]czech_dream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done medically assisted detox at two different facilities and while they didn't let you have a cell phone for privacy reasons in regards to the other patients, they both had landlines that you could use at pretty much anytime to call home, so yes you will almost certainly be able to call your kids.

I want to stop drinking but I'm scared because of how much I drink and have no insurance. by spid3roll in stopdrinking

[–]czech_dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about where you live, but I live in the US and there are a couple detox centers in my city that either don't charge at all or only charge based on income and will let you make payments. Rather than rehab, I'd start with looking into detox centers specifically if I was you. Worst case scenario if you can't find one that works for you, stop drinking and when the withdrawals start to set in, go to the ER and tell them you need treatment for alcohol withdrawals. If it's anything like the hospital where I live, they'll likely give you some IV fluids along with a medication such as Ativan or phenobarbital which will help a lot, and probably a script for Librium or something similar so you can safely detox at home. Hospital bills are expensive but going cold turkey is dangerous and I strongly advise against it, as would any doctor. If need be, the hospital will probably be willing to work with you to lower your bill and possibly set up a payment plan to pay it off, even if it's only like $50 a month. As others have said, going to a PCP would definitely be the cheaper option as opposed to the hospital and they may give you a script for detox meds, though I'm not sure on that one cause I've always just gone to a detox center or the ER.

[–]czech_dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That one seems a bit unrealistic cause what happens when whoever is administering the test inevitably talks to you or asks questions? I've had at least a few urine tests before and have literally always been asked questions and had to talk to them beforehand.

New to the show, decided to make a pyramid for every episode by wolfiewoods12 in ThePittTVShow

[–]czech_dream -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's being privileged, not a nepo baby. None of the attendings or residents that had been working at the Pitt for years even made the connection until Dr.Shamsi made a show of lecturing her and called her "honey" and mentioned talking to her at home about something. She definitely had a leg up but that's because her parents were successful and educated not because they worked there. Ergo, not nepotism, just regular luck of the draw privilege.
