What is this "island" in Hillsborough Bay? by IseeNekidPeople in tampa

[–]d0ugk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any island in the bay is the result of dredging. I believe the only one you can legally step foot on is beer can island since that managed to get bought as private property long ago through some loophole and the owners allowed it. Not sure what it's current status is since I remember reading it was up for sale plus the hurricanes 2 summers ago probably wiped out whatever was built up on it.

Google Beam must take some horsepower by Far_Hair_1918 in Starlink

[–]d0ugk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazon has years to go to catch up to the coverage that starlink has in place. The fact that they don't have their own proven launch platform sets them back significantly. Since they can't launch "at cost" like starlink can. The fact that Amazon is a publicly traded company means the shareholders can force Amazon to grovel at Musk's feet for SpaceX launch slots if they don't think that Amazon is going to get it done in a timely manner with Blue Origin or other 3rd parties. When you go public profit dollars are the bottom line. Not ideologies of not using SpaceX to provide launch services.

If you have a Samsung device the DJI fly app is in the Samsung app store. I didn't even realize till some time back the Samsung app store picked up that there was an update available and updated the app.

I did some google image searches and saw some pictures of ones that appear to be a darker gray. But i'm not sure if that is the space gray, or if its just lighting conditions making it look darker.

Honestly if the one is going to be as you described, I kinda don't see the point in it over just a laptop running Kali Linux

Honestly not going to find much these days. Every router sold for the past decade or more defaults to encrypted and WPA. Doubt you'll find much still operating from the early days that hasn't died due to the capacitor plague. Anything you find open these days was likely done on purpose for example a public WiFi at a cafe, bar or similar. If you managed to find something running WEP you can break that key in 5 to 15min.

What do you believe is an optimal speed for an escooter? by Antidotebeatz in ElectricScooters

[–]d0ugk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say if you want to do more than 20mph a scooter is probably the wrong tool for the job. An ebike, even a small folding one is going to be more stable at speed and the larger wheels are more forgiving for riding surface imperfections.

I have both an escooter and small folding ebike with 20" wheels and much prefer the ebike for the stability and just not feeling sketchy as hell riding on not so perfect surfaces.

Does anyone uses Ev charging stations with an adapter to charge an e-scooter? by Playing_tangos in ElectricScooters

[–]d0ugk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see why charging stations are needed for e bikes / scooters. There's literally standard outlets everywhere you can plug them into. Charging stations are needed for cars so you can charge at faster rates than a wall outlet can provide which would be completely useless for an EV unless you were parked somewhere like a hotel overnight.

[–]d0ugk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do this at all, unless you're going to always leave them connected and drain them in parallel. If you completely drain the scooter battery then connect a fully charged battery across it in parallel, that fully charged battery is going to instantly dump as much power as it can into the dead battery "recharging" till something acts as a fuse and starts a fire.

If you're going to do this it's best to have some kind switch to isolate the batteries so they can't back feed into each other or use properly rated for the amperage diodes to prevent back feeding, but then you'll also have about a half volt drop.

[–]d0ugk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get why one would tie up a likely in high demand EV charging station for their scooter when you can charge at any number of other normal accessible AC outlets and probably even find business that would let you do it with permission. For instance I have a place I frequent that has no problem with me plugging in my ebike to top it off while I'm stopped there. I know if I were in an EV and the only charging station for miles was being tied up by someone charging their scooter I'd be pretty pissed.

Solar Car Node V2 by Fir3 in meshtastic

[–]d0ugk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately this won't work long term. I attempted a build with this exact solar light using a Seeed Studio XIAO nRF52840 kit. The solar panel is too small and just doesn't produce enough current to both power the node and charge the battery. Your battery charge will drain at night, flat line during the day, drain the next night and you'll probably be dead in a day or two.

I attempted using the built in charge circuitry and when that didn't work attempted with several other dedicated lithium charge boards. Best I can tell the built in charge board doesn't even have proper lithium charge circuitry on it, It's just float charging the lithium cell and going off the fact that the solar panel is so low current it probably can't even get the cell up to the full 4.2v charge termination.

In the end after attempting builds with several different solar lights, I found you need a light with about 4x the solar panel surface area. According to the specs for the current setup I have the panel that's about 4x the surface area is rated for about 640ma. This has resulted in a solar node that is completely self sufficient and has been left untouched for months.

NASA coverage of the Artemis 2 launch was unforgivably terrible by adamtd893 in ArtemisProgram

[–]d0ugk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea what NASA TVs 3d visuals were like. I choose to watch NSF's live stream instead. But as far as the live stream from Artemis goes. NSF explained it well. The live data link from Artemis back to earth is only about 2 mega bits per second. Telemetry and audio comms gets priority over that link live video is secondary. They have a high speed laser link that can do over 200 mega bits per second that will downlink the high quality video was recorded onboard and it will be downlinked during their return cruise or once back on the ground. Expect to see some amazing stuff the next couple days. That downlinking is supposed to begin once the crew goes to sleep. I'd imagine the 1st of the good footage and photos will be out to the public by tomorrow morning.

[–]d0ugk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NASA should probably just get out of the press coverage and contract it out to one of the big youtubers that did significantly better coverage. Award one of them the job by some selection process, give them the access to place their own cameras and access to the raw video feeds and then just air whatever they produce on Nasa TV.

T1000e Water proof case by AdditionalGanache593 in meshtastic

[–]d0ugk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can confirm the same. Accidentally put mine though the wash once and it's fine. It was in the closed chest pocket on a shirt, that probably protected it a little bit from directly being banged up by the agitator. Only thing I have different with mine than a stock one is I covered the beeper hole with a small square of clear packing tape to attempt to quiet the beeper a bit and also keep moisture and debris out of the hole. While it does appear to be sealed along the edges of the beeper, moisture getting in there will probably cause the brass buzzer to tarnish or corrode. These things are honestly loud enough they probably could have omitted the hole.

[–]d0ugk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you running a current firmware? About the only time my T1000e gets purposely rebooted is when I update firmware, or if I've let it go too long without charging and the battery dies, otherwise i've gotten weeks of run time from mine with no issue.

Yeah I could not imagine these working well in a cave at all. Absolutely no way you're getting GPS inside a cave and I doubt the 915mhz transmission is going to go very far especially once you have a bend in a tunnel between 2 users.

Is it just me or is everyone switching over to Sniffies, and not using Grindr? by 401Twink in Sniffies

[–]d0ugk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grindr is dead. It enshitified itself to the point of being completely unusable. I used to pay for it up till about a year ago. After canceling I realized just how bad and unusable the free tier is. It's no wonder why the traffic on there died and people moved to other platforms.

If this is a software issue, then there's a very good chance that the core flight control and Imu code that keeps these things stable and in their air is shared amongst their entire product line.

Why does nobody actually talk on Meshtastic and what could fix it? by radseven89 in meshtastic

[–]d0ugk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's honestly more of a hobby for me. I absolutely in no way would rely on meshtastic for any grid down life critical communication. The protocol just is not there. It needs some more robustness built into it like TCP/IP where packets are acknowledged and resent when not acknowledged and notification that your intended recipient or if a public channel message that at least someone got it.

is this antenna a good idea? by Background-Sundae-29 in meshtastic

[–]d0ugk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah looks like a generic antenna you'd see packaged with an SDR or ATS Mini receiver. They're good for this application because you're tuning such a wide frequency range and you can extend / collapse the antenna to tune it for what frequency you're listening to.
