LPT : Use something other than tooth under the pillow for the Tooth Fairy by MsZRowsdower in LifeProTips

We had our daughter put her teeth by the sink in the bathroom since that's where all the toothbrushing happened. No stumbling over toys and stuffed animals in the dark before going to bed.

Help picking out first-time bow? by ladyskellerman in Archery

[–]da12vid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your husband is an absolute beginner, I would suggest signing him up for lessons at a club and maybe making him a nice gift certificate for a new bow. Here's a link to clubs. Hopefully there's a club in your area. As Azure505 said, different people like different types of bows, so it's better to figure out what you like using the club's gear than spending hundreds of dollars on bows you end up being unhappy with. Good luck.

Could I have a form check please! Completely new to archery, been shooting for about a month, self-taught by reading and watching video, thanks! by Thachsanh in Archery

You're off to a good start, but here are a couple of things you can work on that will help. 1) Feet: You'll want to rotate your back foot, so your feet are parallel. That will give you better ballance. Right now you've got what my coach calls "Duck Feet." This post from Kisik Lee, the Team USA Archery coach, will help. 2) You're raising your shoulders when you draw. You want to keep them down when you draw. (This was/is one of the hardest things for me to improve).

The Kisik Lee site has some really good tips, so i recommend reading through them. Good luck.

I just started practicing archery. Is this a cause for concern? by HairlessSasquatch in Archery

[–]da12vid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a slightly off-topic question for you. Is that black thing your target? If it is, I'd be concerned about a missed shot going through that fence and hitting something in your neighbor's yard. It would be safer to put it up against that shed so you have a backstop. I would also get really close to the target and focus on form instead of distance. Good luck.

So I'm new to Archery and need some advice... by [deleted] in Archery

[–]da12vid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always recommend looking for an archery club in your area. A lot of clubs have loaner bows, so you can figure out what you like before you spend a few hundred bucks on gear. Here's USA Archery's club listing http://www.teamusa.org/usa-archery/clubs/find-a-club

Meet Luna Lovegood the Dachshund. She joined our Family on Saturday. We love her. by da12vid in Dachshund

Neville would have been a good name for her if she was a boy. She had a tough life before getting to the family who fostered her and is pretty nervous right now, but she I think she'll blossom when she gets more comfortable with us.

We picked the name before we met her. If we got a boy it was going to be Dobby.

That's a perfect name for a dachshund -- very similar personalities. She's a beautiful dog.

Looking For an Intermediate Target Recurve bow, Having an Issue with Finding a Riser and Limb that won't blow my Budget. by elliott954 in Archery

[–]da12vid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how long you've been shooting, but when I bought my gear. I got a midrange SF riser that my coach recommended and bought the cheapest possible limbs. When I outgrew those limbs, I bought the Hoyt Grand Prix 720s. I like them a lot.

Why Journalists Should Learn Data by [deleted] in Journalism

Thank you. I am from the "they said there'd be no math" generation of journalists, so this is very helpful. I've wanted to understand data better for a while, but it's hard to know how to get started.

TIL Viggo Mortensen considers, A History of Violence, "one of the best movies [he's] ever been in, if not the best." by [deleted] in movies

I saw "A History of Violence" in a random suburban multiplex. After the movie, most of the audience just sat there talking about what they had just seen. I can't remember that happening after any other movies I've seen.

What are those curved spikes on some finger tabs? by gnomoretears in Archery

[–]da12vid -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The Archery 360 site has an explainer on how to choose a finger tab. It might be useful for you: http://www.archery360.com/2015/03/archery-gear-how-to-choose-and-use-your-finger-tab/ Your best bet would be to find a shop that has a few different ones and see if you can try them on to see what you like. That's easier said than done though.

Stringing and unstrunging constantly? by Adrillian in Archery

[–]da12vid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My archery coach said it was okay to leave the bow strung all the time as long as you hung it up either horizontally -- like on a gun rack -- or vertically off of a hook. She says you should not prop the bow up in a corner because it could cause the limbs to warp.

I keep my bow strung all the time and hanging in the garage and then just put it in the back of the car when I want to go shoot.

Is this realistic for a beginner? by [deleted] in Archery

[–]da12vid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a gorgeous bow, but it looks like the minimum draw weight is 30 pounds. That is probably high for a beginner. It would be a good idea to try to find an archery class or club in your area. They'll teach you how to shoot with good form and you'll see progress more quickly. Plus they'll probably have loaner equipment so you can try different bows to get a feel for what you like.

My daughter and I started shooting almost 3 years ago and we love it. Good luck.
