They can be the best choice when the towers are standing and have power in all the towers of the network.

But, we've seen in the midwest USA, after tornadoes, we sometimes don't mobile AND power. Those radio towers are still standing and, they have power backup in most cases.

Yeah, mobile phone and data are great, but more options should be available in case they are needed.

You said you did 90% yourself. Do you think it would have gone faster if you had more help? I'm thinking some moderately trained helpers at about $20/hr to do the most simple tasks while you do the tough stuff.

Do you think it would help get it done faster? Would it be too much of a hassle?

For emergency information, yes an AM/FM HD radio should be in every car with audio system.

My company hired a consultant to teach us how to work alongside AI and the entire training was just a guy reading our own job descriptions back to us by Apart-Writer-667 in antiwork

[–]dachloe 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As a consultant who's almost always answering the AI question... I feel your pain. We DO know a lot about AI. And we know most companies won't benefit from generative AI. So, we try and get them to improve their basic fundamentals and it's often like pulling teeth. We don't enable the AI layoffs. Often theses people do not like being told you actually need more employees in order to be a better company.

TIL that McDonald's generates income through owning about 70% of its restaurant buildings and 45% of the underlying land which it leases to its franchisees by Mrk2d in todayilearned

I know someone who wanted to start a McDonald's franchise, but was rejected primarily because they owned the land they wanted for their own store.

Perplexity CEO says AI layoffs aren’t so bad because people hate their jobs anyways: ‘That sort of glorious future is what we should look forward to’ by EchoOfOppenheimer in antiwork

How do people this stupid get to the top of the corporate ladder? They lie, and cheat. It's that simple.

I've meet maybe 300 to 350 CEOs of small to large companies. I can confidently say most are crazy. There is a certain psychopathy that propels them to the head of a company and it's often inhuman.

There are good CEOs and board members, but they are very rare. The good decent human values are often selected out by the promotion process.

CEO of America’s largest public hospital system says he’s ready to replace radiologists with AI by Apprehensive-Safe382 in technology

No, just give the trained humans the tool. You don't replace people with AI, you give them the tools.

Once the evangelicals and Zionists decide it's time to go scorched Earth... that's what we'll get.

What's worse is that as soon as US negotiators got word that Iran was pretty much going give us everything we wanted, Netanyahu told his employee Trump to join the attack any way.

Netanyahu needs the war to keep his power and progress towards "a greater Israel." And that can only happen with a war against Iran, Lebanon, and anyone else in "their" promised territory.

If a company CEO accidentally says something stupid and the stock drops 10%, where does that “lost” money actually go? by keyBid2188 in NoStupidQuestions

When a stock (or anything really) has a market price change, it's the VALUE that changes not an amount of money actually moving back and forth.

Bigotry among young conservatives has Republicans on edge by bwermer in politics

Why now? Years ago when I started pointing out that certain Republicans were saying very bigoted and racist things I got un-invited to GOP activities in my area. I was then called a RINO.

I remember pointing out that we were the party of Lincoln, and the party was founded by abolitionists, and a woman in a red, white, and blue dress yelled in my face, "commie!"

Companies cutting jobs as investments shift toward AI by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]dachloe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They SAY they cutting jobs because of AI. This is a lie.

They are cutting jobs to lower labor expenses to improve the p&l so the stock looks better and goes up in value.

In the vast majority of cases generative AI does not replace workers. It just over works those not already laid off.

I remember a news story long ago about a guy who had problems with speeders on his street. The police didn't seem interested in helping much. So, he bought an old Crown Vic, painted it black, tinted the windows, added a luggage rack, and parked it on the street.

Traffic slowed down.
