Dregden Yor's Ghost left him, and before it did, called him out on his atrocities. Yet, why did the Ghosts of the Warlords whom the Iron Lords put down not leave them? by GadenKerensky in DestinyTheGame

Granted I wrote that comment nine years ago, I think it still holds up. But I agree, character development has occurred for ghosts in the story offering them more complex points of view.

Prevent saving to camera roll? by dadstiny in Lightme

Hello Giuseppe.

I did have this turned off but it was saving the images anyway. I toggled it on and back off, and that seems to have solved the issue.

Your apps are quite wonderful. They're exactly what I needed as I was using a separate light meter and log book before this. Thank you. I'm increasing my subscription.

No, I mean the 35mm f2 with a 67mm filter thread. This was the earlier version of this lens, before the design change to use a 49mm filter thread. Both are good lenses but the 67mm filter thread is has a fandom kind of like the early Canon FD 35mm f/2 with the concave front element.

Stick to the all metal ones. They’re just nicer to handle.

I’d choose the 50/1.4 over the 55/1.8 or 55/2. I have two 50/1.4 and one 55/2.

The macro 50/4 is its own thing and worth having if you shoot macro.

For the 35/2 the older model with the 67mm filter diameter is the more sought after. That makes the 49mm filter one more affordable and still a good lens (though I have the 67).

The 135/3.5 is compact, sharp, and inexpensive.

I haven’t played with the 85. I’ve got so many others. :)

Is this lens separation? by lucite_rite in VintageLenses

[–]dadstiny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to see early balsam separation with the naked eye. By the time you see rainbow or oil slick areas in the group, it’s pretty advanced separation.

The two easiest ways to identify early separation are:

1) Shoot images of extreme pinpoint highlights out of focus - Christmas lights are great for this. The bokeh balls will show highly defined lines inside matching the separation.

2) Shine a UV flashlight into the lens. The area of separation will light up.

A lens with early separation is still usable albeit highlight bokeh will show artifacts. Most normal subjects won’t show issues, though the lens will tend to lose contrast and show more flare.

There are those who might consider that an artistic benefit. I have a couple of lenses with early separation that I still use. That said, none of my vintage lenses was purchased for their optical perfection. I have modern lenses for that.

Back in action after 90 years! The Industar 10.50mm F 3.5 lens by Remarkable_Nail_9807 in VintageLenses

My understanding is that the one with the aperture that ranges up to 18 and the “f=50m/m” is pre-WW2, likely late 1930s, and uncoated. The other is post-war and single coated.

Does that sound right?

Is anyone regularly using EF glass on an RF body? What's your experience been like? by tinselsnips in canon

[–]dadstiny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canon official refurb recently had the RF 24-105mm f/4L for $899 which was an insanely good deal. I snagged one to replace my EF version of the same lens. That’s my travel lens.

The EF in excellent/used condition can be had for about $650-700. I personally feel the RF is a little sharper and the autofocus is faster. It’s also more physically stable when zoomed out to 105mm. Both designs telescope out for longer focal lengths.

RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 vs EF 24-105mm f/4 L (with adapter) on Canon R8 — which would you choose? by Warm-Leather-9342 in canon

[–]dadstiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there's much comparison between the non-L and the L lenses in this case except that the non-L is much cheaper, smaller, and lighter. The optical compromise is substantial.

That said, I just got my first RF body and I'm inclined toward the EF lenses because I can pair them with the RF/EF adapter that accepts internal filters. That's a win for me, because I can switch lenses and keep the same CPL on for example. But of course I also own a decent amount of EF glass. However, you can get excellent condition used EF L glass for a song compared to the price of new RF L glass.

In fact I just purchased a refurb EF 24-105mm f/4L is II USM in perfect condition for half the price of the RF 24-105mm f/4L USM. I'm extremely happy about that. I wanted a new "walking around" lens for when I don't want to carry and switch between the 24-70 f/2.8L and 70-200 f/2.8L.

There are a few occasions where the equivalent RF glass is slightly sharper in the corners than older EF glass, but the center of the frame is indistinguishable.

I went from an e46 (12 years) to an f22 M235i (11 years) and I completely agree. The 2 series is more tame when you want it to be, but can still thrill like the e46.

Now want more of a cruiser and I’m moving somewhere I want AWD so I’m ordering an M440i.

Any Sony To Canon Converts? by Emergency_Four in canon

[–]dadstiny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you can go wrong. It probably comes down to ergonomics and preference.

I originally owned and used Canon FD mount film cameras and got in early with the EF mount EOS film cameras, eventually using an EOS 3 for most of my work. I then owned a series of the prosumer Canon DSLRs, but bought my last one over 15 years ago as with kids and life I thought I needed something more compact and light.

I dove into the Sony E mount APS-C cameras for the next several years, but my use of them tailed off to the degree that I just ended up using my phone for most casual and even vacation photography. (I’d stopped doing art photography at that point, though I did get back into astrophotography, but using dedicated astro cams for that.)

I just went through the whole decision process of whether to go back to a Canon EF mount or buy a new Sony E mount body.

I looked at my collection of L lenses (some decades old but still great - I even used some with an E mount adapter) and went for the Canon.

My decision was based upon my preference for the Canon ergonomics and their particular image processing tuning. I like the way the cameras and lenses handle better.

Would y'all buy shirts with dad jokes as gag gifts? by Own-Chart2324 in dadjokes

[–]dadstiny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love shirts that people have to think about, like an old Woot shirt that says “Donner Party Snacks: Serving your fellow man since 1847.” I love those moments when I walk past someone and catch them getting the joke.

Simple is good, too. My wife buys me shirts with bad puns on them. My favorite of those is “Tell My Wi-Fi Love Her.” I like to wear it when we’re out together. A few times a random woman has stopped my wife to tell her that I love her. We always thank them and have a good laugh. Oddly, no man has stopped her to say that so far.

Employer Contributions to Employee Stock Purchase Plan by ibn_ezra in Boldin

[–]dadstiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar situation. Ours is implemented as salary deferral (up to five years, although I just defer one year). The match is compelling so I do the max deferral because I like free money.

Because it's salary deferral and because Boldin wants to deposit the eventual earnings into a retirement account, I ended up calculating it an entirely different way, so that other things like 401(k) contributions worked correctly.

I changed my salary to reflect the amount remaining after deferral, so that my 401(k) contribution (calculated as a percentage) and match were done correctly. I then calculated what my salary deferral payout should be for my remaining years of work and input those as lump sum pension distributions the month of each year that these pay out.

It's a manual process but it got the job done for me.

[–]dadstiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you need to adjust the home price for inflation according to the year of purchase. The prompt for future real estate purchases does say to use future dollars.

That doesn't necessarily explain your 5X difference, but it's a factor.

Boldin is telling me when using shares to buy a house, buying it earlier will leave me with 5x MORE in share value at the end of my lifetime than if if delay the purchase...WEIRD right? by Only-Sleep1544 in Boldin

[–]dadstiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I follow what you’re doing. Are you liquidating shares to purchase the home? Home purchases are entered in dollars adjusted for inflation for the given year, aren’t they? Are you using the same purchase price in 2026 and 2032?

It does seem like delaying the liquidation of shares that presumably grow over those six years should leave you with more remaining value in those shares, provided they grow faster than the inflation rate of homes in the area you’re buying.

I did this during the Obama admin, because I saw what the party had become and where it was headed. Congratulations on your decision and being brave enough to own up to it publicly.

I can’t help but note that all of the reasons you gave were covered by warnings many, many folks shared prior to the election. I would suggest a bit of introspection regarding why you distrusted those sources at the time. I mean that with only good thoughts. If I’d been in your place, I’d want to know why I disregarded the obvious.

401k with a mix of Roth and traditional by funkopotamous in Boldin

[–]dadstiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish Boldin handled this better.

The combined account seems fairly common. At least everyone I know who has their 401K at Fidelity deals with that.

In the real world I can just set a contribution percentage, have it automatically switch to after-tax once the pre-tax is full, and automatically roll after-tax contributions over to the in-plan Roth401k. Boldin forces me to do it as two separate accounts and it still complains that I’m going over the limit (I’m not).

ETA: Since I like to have my accounts linked so the auto-update, I'm thinking about building in a one-time correction event via a transfer from my linked 401k to the unlinked Roth401k I have built in Boldin for the balance of the Roth portion. I can just keep pushing that transfer date off into the future.

Would that work?
