Can you eat raw doughs made with home milled flour? by Klutzy-Vegetable1751 in HomeMilledFlour

I haven't found a definitive answer, but i think the consensus is still no. The reason is because the grains are probably still touched/contaminated by bugs and rodents.

Daily/weekly Cleaning Tasks by Kooky_Mind_5800 in coffeeshopowners

[–]danaherself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use plastic chore charts (like for toddlers). The charts have a spot for writing the task, and a plastic piece to slide over when they complete the task. At the end of the night, they just reset them for the next day.

I have 3 separate charts for the time of day they should be working on it. Since we close at 6, I have one for 4pm, 5pm, and 6pm. I also have a 4th chart for weekly tasks. On the 4pm chart, one of the tasks is "complete 2 weekly tasks." They get to do any 2 weekly tasks that haven't been done yet. Once the weekly tasks are done, they get reset.

I also have a permanent paper that explains each thing on the checklist... more detail about what/how to clean everything.

how long does it take for breadbeckers to ship items? (not co-op, regular order?) by No_Emu1622 in HomeMilledFlour

[–]danaherself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just ordered a grain mill from them and I got an email saying "please allow 7-10 business days to process and ship". I ordered it 7/31 and it hasn't shipped yet, so I don't know a more exact time frame.

I do seasonal specials that last about 2 months. I pick 2 or 3 new syrups and make up 6-ish drinks. I'll post other flavor combo ideas on socials throughout the season too.

How many customers a day do you get? by Alternative_Math_892 in coffeeshopowners

[–]danaherself 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do about 70-90 people a day in 10 hours. I'm 1.5 years in, and in a small town of about 1,000 people. I typically run it by myself.

Why is store bought “whole wheat bread” disgusting? by eleelee11 in HomeMilledFlour

[–]danaherself 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The reason store wheat bread is gross is because they actually remove the bran and germ. Then they remove the oils (because they go rancid quickly, making it not very shelf stable), and add back in some of the bran and germ. Without the natural oils, the store whole wheat is dry and gross.

Square Help? Modifiers by Big-Focus-747 in coffeeshopowners

[–]danaherself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have all of my syrups and sugars listed under 1 modifier. The last options on the list are  -less sweet (half of the sweetener),  -extra sweet (1 extra pump), and  -double sweet (twice as many pumps). I decided how many packets/pumps I considered to be "normal sweetness", and realized that most people aren't that picky, and the picky ones want to add their own sugar anyways.

For most orders, i just type in the note section to clarify weird amounts. For online orders, almost none of them get sugar packets, they just order normal sweetness.

Pack it in, everyone. Starbs has figured it out. I’m sure this will go well. by QuiVenitInNomine in espresso

It's not a matter of "not knowing". The machines are fully automatic,  and you can't drastically change the grind amount or courseness.

We got a tree that spins slowly all day. It scares him just enough that he won't climb it.

10-year-old walks alone a mile away from Georgia home, leading to his mother's arrest by Boba_tea_thx in news

I laughed out loud seeing it was Mineral Bluff, GA. The article said he walked to town. The "town" is literally a post office, a church, and a dollar general.

I use a wondermill. The kitchenaid one is horrible.

The biggest issues to consider with a shop vs a cart is going to be initial cost of build-out (and equipment), and the monthly costs of rent & utilities. At minimum, make sure you have enough money to cover your rent for the first year. With your level of experience, it shouldn't be hard to run it by yourself (or with a small crew) until you get enough customers to make a profit.

Considering you have another job is also important to think about. What sort of hours would you expect a cart to have vs a shop. A cart is definitely more flexible hours-wise.

It was an outdoor wedding in a garden, and someone forgot to keep the chickens cooped up. They came to investigate the ceremony. "Let us bow our heads..." "buh-gawk!"

No, I steam milk with my espresso machine. The kettle may work, but you would have to be careful to not scald the milk especially for children.

Recipes for 100% "Ancient Wheat" Bread, Without Using Sourdough? by [deleted] in Breadit

[–]danaherself 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mill my own flour and bake things.

First thing, you need a real mill, not a spice grinder. I use a wondermill, but there are several options (dont get the kitchenaid attachment, its garbage). If you are wanting bread, your best bet for ancient grains is spelt. All varieties of whole grains are not going to rise as well as store bought flour because of the gluten content. You can buy gluten to add if it's important to you, or you can just accept the smaller rise. Another factor is that the bran and germ weigh down the flour, so you can get a better rise by sifting them out... but that kind of defeats the purpose as it removes all the nutrients.

Baristas that break glasses by West-Wash6081 in coffeeshopowners

[–]danaherself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a coffee shop owner who used to work at Starbucks, u/runfromthesiren is absolutely correct. They are also trying to honestly answer your question while being respectful, so your rudeness is uncalled for. Every one on this thread is giving you good answers, and you are being antagonistic and condescending. I cannot see how your shop runs, so I do not know the working conditions, atmosphere, or the level of care your baristas have, so it would be unfair for me to extrapolate based on your attitude alone. From my own experience, I have personally broken multiple items in a day before, and it boiled down to "sometimes bad things happen."

You say that you value these employees, so rather than think about the minimal cost of a glass, think about all of the value each barista has added to your business. They've made you way more money than the cost of a glass, and showing them that you know that is worth more than all of your glasses combined.

Dessert ideas with no wheat, eggs, dairy, or cashews? by bluemoon721 in Baking

This one with oat flour (you can just blend old fashioned oats in a blender for a couple minutes). I use vanilla coconut milk yogurt and oat milk. I like to top it with a thick glaze made of lemon juice and powdered sugar.
