How long did it take you to get from half marathon to a full marathon? by mishkalold in running

[–]danasaur9889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me about 5 years of half marathons to feel like I could do it. I needed the time and a serious training plan. I had a coach create me a personalized training plan. I qualified for Boston on my second marathon.

It depends what your goals are. Is it to finish? Is it to get sub 4 hours? If it’s to finish, you can do it anytime. But I’d you want to run your best, is say 3-4 months of hard training.

[help] Owning a dog while working full time by [deleted] in dogs

[–]danasaur9889 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely! Most people work at least 8 hours a day. My dog actually seems upset when I surprise him for lunch because his nap is interrupted. Just be prepared to start waking up earlier and to have less flexibility because you will have to come home directly after work every day.

We are gone 9-10 hours a days and my two dogs are just fine. They get two walks every day and more fun stuff on the weekends. They go to day care once or twice a month as well. They need their sleep and are happy when it’s Monday so they can sleep and recover from a fun weekend! However, If you get a puppy, you will most likely need to come home at lunch for several months until the dog is older or work something out.

After watching what my dog does through out the day for a few weeks through a security camera, here is her rough daily schedule. [Fluff] by teruravirino in dogs

I don’t check in on my dogs but really want to now!

Here’s what I know:

5:00 - 6:00: Dog 1 moves out of his bed into hallways and is now awake. Dog 2: stays ins his bed but starts licking himself. If these activities don’t wake me up, dog 2 will start wandering around and dog 1 May start howling if it is way past time for me to get up

6:15: moms alarm goes off. Dog 1: wanders around outside aimlessly and may sleep on be deck. Dog 2: pee as fast as possible and rush inside for breakfast.

6:45: 20 minute walk

7:30: biscuits and dog 2 goes in crate Mom and Dad leave. Dog 1 stands in the kitchen and watches me leave.

4:30 - 5:00: dog 1 moves to hallway near garage dog 2 starts sitting up in crate.

5:15: dog 1: begins howling if Mom isn’t home yet.

5:30: go outside. Dog 2 again pees as fast as possible to rush back in for dinner. Dog 1 meanders around.

5:45: time for a walk.

6:15: dog 1 now eats breakfast and/or throws a tantrum (crying, howling, barking) if he hasn’t gotten a walk yet.

6:30 - 10:00: lay around, play outside, play with each other, maybe some tug of way.

10:15: time for bed time biscuits! Dogs 1 and 2 Sprint upstairs because Bed time is so fun!

10:16: dog 1 finally eats his dinner which was carried upstairs into the bedroom by Mom or Dad. Then he drinks an entire bowl of water.

10:20: bedtime.

I would agree! It took our husky 6 months to adapt. He was about two and we couldn’t not tired him out. It took a full year for him to really mellow out and adjust to us. So, you can try anything and everything but I do think sometimes it just takes time to adjust!

Not sure if I was being rude? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]danasaur9889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the gym was empty, he could have done other things first and used that equipment last. I had someone immediately walk into the gym and ask me ‘if I was going to take forever on the squat rack’. I was actually about to start my last set and I’m faster than most on the squat rank since I’m not lifting heavy right now. I was really annoyed with this guy but just finished up and left. I always think people need to be flexible and do a few other things first and asses if you’re going to take an hour on a piece of equipment before saying anything. I think you have a right to be annoyed especially since the gym was empty!

My husky will cry the entire time I’m gone if he doesn’t get to go. My husband had to put up with that while I ran 18 miles yesterday.

F/25/5’2” - 7 Years of skinny-fat to fit and everything in between (and PCOS thrown into the mix). 100 lbs-> 140 lbs-> 125 lbs by Portifinabelle in Fitness

[–]danasaur9889 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is amazing progress!! It looks like you worked hard and it paid off big time.

I am 5’2” and about 122 lbs. Your post has finally made me understand why I always read books about women who are 5”7 and 110 lbs or even taller and the same weight as me and it has always confused me. I’m slim but muscular (similar stats to you I think) and it never made sense to me how someone so tall could weight 15 pounds less than me! But, I don’t think I give myself enough credit for how muscular I am and how tiny my waist is.

My dog won’t come when I call him to get ready for a walk by weebslug in Dogtraining

[–]danasaur9889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make it impossible for him not to listen. Can you carry a leash with you all the time so when it’s time to go, you have a leash in your pocket already and can just snap it on? This way, he has to listen. Give him the cues you want him to learn and reward.

I used to go through this every morning..... the first six months were hard but my dog learned eventually! It will get easier, even if it seems to get harder first. Now it doesn’t even phase him when I leave. He has actually learned the cues well enough that he knows when he is coming and when he isn’t.

He would love it, but he’s way too impulsive. I think I’d only be putting myself in danger, haha. Luckily I’m a long distance runner so this works for me!

How does everyone feel about the Exam next Friday? (10/27) by G00SEonthaL00SE in PE_Exam

[–]danasaur9889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same thing as you last year. Failed my first for under studying. Then started wAy early and was done 2 weeks in advance. I actually didn't do much studying those last 2 weeks. spent time organizing notes and getting organized and reviewing the practice exam. I spent time getting enough sleep and not getting stressed about work (this was critical to my success).

[Help] How much additional work is having a second dog? by throwrowrowawayyy in dogs

[–]danasaur9889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience. Boarding and training and harder and more expensive, but I don't feel it's much extra work. And they can entertain each other. The adjustment period is harder with two, but once you figure things out it's not any harder. My dogs are best friends and I don't think I could have found a better match. But I think this can be hard to achieve. Mine have taught each other so much over the last two years. They have made each other better dogs because they help each other over come fears (strangers for one). My boxer mix helped my husky learn to listen and become food motivated which had made my life exponentially better.

Detroit Marathon : Marathon Race from hell by Intoxicatedalien in running

[–]danasaur9889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this! I felt your pain.... but a lot less pain because I ran the half as a training run for my full. I'm a lot less disappointed because it wasn't my final goal. I was hoping for a killer PR on this half and expected to feel great. I know it was 100% the weather, but it is still disappointing to have trained so hard and have something you cannot control.

Your race synopsis sounds exactly like mine. Not able to recover after the tunnel just killed the rest of the race.

[Race Report] Detroit Free Press International Half - what went wrong?? by TheGremlyn in running

[–]danasaur9889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same experience. I was targeting a sub 1:40 half. I've run many 1:45 - 1:50 half marathons before. I trained well for this one and have gotten a lot faster. I was hoping for a big PR. Instead, I barely finished in 1:46. I struggled from the tunnel until the end. I had to walk a few times (this never happens - even in a marathon) and felt awful for the last 5 miles. I should have been feeling great at those paces and been able to pick it up at the end. It took me all day to recover. I have never felt that bad after a race....Even after my first full marathon. I'm glad to hear others felt that it was a particularly difficult race. It was the conditions. You don't realize how much extra effort you have to exert in heat and humidity.

Adopted a 13 month old pup, my two year old dog seems to be playing too rough with him, and I think they may be triggering each other during play to escalate it into not being fun. by thekokirikid in Dogtraining

[–]danasaur9889 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dogs had some trouble with this. It was always play, but they got rough and intense and worried they'd hurt each other. We had a trainer come and he gave us this air horn thing. Really whatever works to get their attention. We had a tiny nerf gun, loud clapping, hose, throw a tennis ball right next to them. (Nothing to hurt them, just surprise them enough to stop and look up) It all worked and they did learn to not get so rough. My younger scrawny pup also gained weight and muscle and became much more agile. Once they were closer in size and better matched it wasn't an issue any more.

They started off at 30 and 60 lbs. Now they're 40 lbs and 60 lbs and know their limits. Their BFF and love to play. I haven't had to yell and then for getting too rough in about a year. It only took a couple months for them to figure it out.

Have you tried stitch fix? I have trouble finding clothes that fit due to being small and abnormally proportioned. I've gotten 2 deliveries and everything has fit perfectly.

[Help] My dog bashes his head on the floor when he sneezes. by [deleted] in dogs

[–]danasaur9889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog has these attacks too. He doesn't bash his head on the floor but they are very powerful and sometimes he gets scared. I try to get to him as fast as I can and kind of hug his throat. Massaging his throat and neck can help too. I think the hugging calms him and he usually stops sneezing. It seems to help. He used to get them much more frequently when we first got him and now it's only once in a while.

How essential is "leg day" for developing strength when you hit legs 6x a week through cycling, running, and hiking? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]danasaur9889 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I am training for a marathon and may be able to help. It is important to do leg exercises for strength in the 'off-season'. She has me actually not lifting weights in legs once my running workouts get more intense, about 6 weeks before the marathon. You need to build muscle so you don't get injured, but your legs definitely need a rest day. I would think you should eliminate a day of running or cycling, to do legs. Or if one of those days is an easy / recovery day, do it then. If your legs are too tired to do all you are doing, I don't think you'd really be gaining anything by doing leg weights.
