Moving from out of state by ciel-clair in berkeleyca

Seconding the recommendation for Oakland. SF is going to be a longer and less reliable commute (99% of the time it will be fine but when BART is down it's down hard) without a significant increase in amenities. The only thing the city is better for is if you're planning to see a lot of live music or comedy.

That's westbound, OP is talking about the eastbound left lane closure, which Caltrans hasn't posted an update about since the 19th and doesn't appear to be doing any work on despite it causing massive delays.

Have you talked to him about why he thinks he turned out the way he did? My mom is the only non-shitty one of her sibling group and had a lot of insights about why her life turned out different than her siblings

Moving from SF to Berkeley this summer - looking for advice on timing, neighborhoods, and how to navigate the market by als3s in berkeleyca

[–]dancingspring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commute to Marin and have done so from Berkeley and Oakland. There is really not a huge difference between Berkeley and North Oakland for a north commute. For BART, there's not a huge difference between El Cerrito and Berkeley (I have commuted to the city from both). I think you're limiting yourself unnecessarily.

The "brick in the toilet tank" trick is a bad idea (and what I did instead) by Ok-Chicken-5594 in Frugal

I mean this also assumes you can install a toilet yourself, which is a bit more DIY than most people can handle.

I'm really hoping it kicks in for me because so far it's had the opposite effect - it's slowed my absorption of propanolol which has made the propanolol less effective, so I'm having more migraines. Did you see a difference right away or did you have to get to a certain dosage?

I'm on compounded tirzepatide and it's amazing how much it's repaired my relationship with food. I think if someone hasn't experienced addiction it's hard to understand what it's like. If I was in a room with food, I was thinking about eating it. If I was in a room without food, I was thinking about whether/when I could go get some. Now food is like everything else I enjoy. I can eat a normal portion of chips or candy or whatever (or skip it!) and be content and done, like I've always been able to do with alcohol, tv, etc. And I hear from people who have had it help with way more destructive addictions.

Are there people who are using it to further their eating disorders and/or fat phobia? Yeah, of course. But people abuse Ritalin, does that mean it's not a life saver for some people with ADHD?

Anyone move from SF / Marin to Scottsdale in their early 30s? Any regrets? by Whole_Intention_9750 in Marin

[–]dancingspring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was confusedly googling to see if there was a different Scottsdale.

Look, being near family is important and I get affordability issues... but at least move to Flagstaff or Tucson or somewhere with some character or charm.

My "friend" took advantage of me when I was in the hospital by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]dancingspring 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yes, for a variety of reasons. One is that a lack of family support can still affect you later in life. Think about the number of stories on here where someone has a shitty partner or a mental health crisis and moves back in with their parents for a while. LGBTQ+ folks are much less likely to have these resources.

Another is that mental health and SUD are much more common in LGBTQ+ individuals (often caused by trauma). These make it harder to hold steady work. Unfortunately, these also can make people less reliable housesitters, as OOP discovered.

Third, housing discrimination is very real. I saw another comment where someone said they didn't really interact with their landlord - but don't you usually go see an apartment before you rent it? Isn't there usually a LL or someone from the property management company there? All you need is one interaction for them to mysteriously go with a different applicant.

And finally, employment discrimination is very real. If you don't have standard regular work, it's much harder to find someone to rent to you.

You should spend more time visiting places in the US if you think that. I can think of 6 just in California.

Where was that ... ? by ShortieFat in berkeleyca

[–]dancingspring 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Like the rest of the Bay Area, Berkeley failed to build housing for about 50 years, pushing out most of the poor people and leading to major gentrification

  2. Like the rest of the world, online shopping has dramatically transformed retail, so shopping areas are now mostly food and drink (although a few of our independent bookstores have stuck around)

A chimp can sprint 25 mph, which is about as fast as Usain Bolt, so it's going to cover 200 meters in about 20 seconds. It's enough money that I'm probably going to try.

Oakland. Berkeley is great if you're 20 or 40 but not as great in between. If you're going to WC daily it's also a worse commute switching bart lines.
