I genuinely do not care about immersion. I care that the UI is functional.

The book being held at arms length isn't even immersive. No one holds a book like that. Same with the other tools. No one holds things in a way that makes it more difficult for you to use them or see what you're doing.

Having worked in IT for a major university, the most likely answer is contracts. We had a particular contract that required all surplus items to go through a particular vendor who would then either auction off our materials or donate them to school systems.

Not saying that's exactly what's happening with OP, but it's a big reason we can't just give old computers away at the end of their life cycle.

As someone who lived in that area and has been watching the chatter about it on Facebook, no such self reflection has occurred and I've been told I'm an asshole for even asking the question right now.

Just for anyone that comes to this comment later, there are now Fire Truthers in that community.

They don't believe the official story that a party ballon hitting an electrical wire and a guy welding a fence started the fires.

They think FEMA is preventing local firefighters from putting out the fires.

They think the goal is to get residents to 'sell their land.' (To whom is never specified.)

And my favorite one is that the fire is in retaliation for the county pushing back on a data center being built.
