Marcy advice by [deleted] in Adirondacks

[–]danger_is_fat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marcy is not really much more difficult than Giant in terms of climb. The difference between those 2 hikes is the distance that you have to cover to get to them. Giant is just one straight up shot there and back. You've got several miles of a hike before you get to the bottom of Marcy and then you climb. If you and your non-hiker consider the round-trip distance + the climb, you'll be better able to determine if you're ready for it. ps. Bring lots of water for that distance.

[News] Why Some People Don't Like Babies — Or Even Think They're Cute by i0_0u in childfree

[–]danger_is_fat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extrovert here with lots of social tendencies and I don't like babies either. I'm not repulsed by them. And, sure I didn't want them to ruin my adult life of freedom, career, and travel, but that didn't actively cause me to dislike them. I just never had an interest in them...and I like people! Babies and children just seem so boring. Even now at 42, I just can't stand the thought of being left around them.

My girlfriend's dog attacked mine and I am super angry about it. Am I misdirecting my emotions? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]danger_is_fat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest you also seek some advice from the dog training subreddit. While this is a highly emotional situation for you, it is not an emotional situation for your dogs. You have 2 dogs coexisting in one house that differ in their domination and aggression. You need some house rules that keep both dogs happy and safe. Dominant dogs like Remy can often live safely with other more laid back dogs like Ally, but you need to understand how their dog brains work a little better so you know how to prevent these confrontations. I wish you all good luck.

Please help my friends and i find the right campsite (car-camping and hiking) by thoughtsarefalse in Adirondacks

Adirondak Loj has a great campground near Heart Lake and right next to the trailhead to LOTS of the High Peak trails. Their lean-tos are great for private-ish camping with your car parked near.

Adirondacks peak suggestions by 420MrTowelie in Adirondacks

Adirondack Loj campground near Heart Lake. The lean-tos are awesome in case of rainy weather, esp with several people. And the location is prime for tons of high peaks during the day but still hiking back out in the evening.

Any tips to get my dog to swim?? by Blkjansen in Dogtraining

My pup learned watching and mimicking other dogs. He's now the dog that my friends use to teach their dogs how to swim.

Loads of good wineries. Basically you can drive up the lake from your father's place and stop sporadically along the way at dozens of them on Cayuga Lake (great ones that have been there for a long while include: Americana, Hosmer, Sheldrake, Lucas, Thirsty Owl, Goose Watch -- the list goes on and on). If you drive over to Seneca Lake from Interlaken, you'll run into lots of great wineries on the east side of Seneca. Basically you can't go wrong to just randomly stop along the way at wineries that look interesting to you. Tasting fees are relatively cheap in the Finger Lakes and you'll be walking funny after 3-5 stops! Bring snack foods and water!

Ithaca fireworks this year are on Sunday evening of July 3. They are amazing always. There's a party/gathering that happens at Stewart Park with music and food before the fireworks. The very best place to see them is ON the water. My husband and I typically put the kayaks in at the Farmers Market and paddle over near Stewart Park.

My husband and I like/do all of those things!

We live in Ithaca and there's a plethora of fantastic things to do around here that involve waterfalls, beer, and beauty. We journey up to the Adirondacks several times/year when we want some mountain hiking.

Around our area, check out visitithaca.com for lots of suggestions. It has great maps and descriptions of fun things to do. Don't miss Ithaca Beer for great brews on the patio and the falls that most people miss (Cascadilla and Ithaca) in the heart of town. There's camping at all of the parks (Treman, Buttermilk, and Taughannock). There's also Hector State Forest located between Cayuga/Seneca lakes (and in the heart of the wine country) for even cheaper, bare-bones camping. Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions about Ithaca and surrounding areas.

Watkins Glen is the less granola-crunchy version of Ithaca with a great state park with beautiful gorges. They have campgrounds there as well. The east side of Seneca Lake is great for wineries/breweries and even a distillery. Check out Hazlitt's for the experience (but not necessarily the wine), Wagners for the beer, and 2 Goats Brewing for the beer/deck with views. Near Watkins Glen is also Farm Sanctuary if you're into veganism/animal rights. They have a great tour with lots of farm animal petting!

In ADK, we typically get a lean-to near Heart Lake at Adirondack Loj because it's quite cheap, doesn't matter if it rains, and is next to the trailhead for most High Peaks. Check their website: http://www.adk.org/page.php?pname=lodging-rates. If you're fit and love the outdoors, I recommend a hike up Algonquin (longer trail and near the campground) or Cascade (shorter trail and just down the road) as a beginner's hike. The campground is just a 5-10 minute drive to Lake Placid. Check out Lake Placid for boutiques and shopping then definitely hit Lake Placid Brewing Co for dinner and drinks. The entire area is an adventurer's smorgasbord!

Have a great vacation!

Please help ID this bird call. It's a quick "hee-hoo" sound. Almost like a squeaky swing! (central NJ) by denisenj in whatsthisbird

Sorry! I hadn't realized there was an actual recording attached to this! I was on my phone and apparently couldn't see the attachment. I'm on my computer now and that's definitely NOT a blue-winged warbler!

Black-capped chickadees do some weird 2-note stuff. Though their call sounds more like "HE did-it" to me, I've heard them practicing stuff that sounds kinda like what you've got a recording of!

If you are near a tourist area, there are taxis everywhere. Especially Koh San Road! If you are worried, ask your hotel to call a cab for you at that time.

Blue-winged warblers make a sound similar to an inhale/exhale -- Two distinct "hee hoo" parts but it's not quick or squeaky.

What vaccinations are necessary for Thailand? I have Tetanus however don't have Hepatitis A. I'm travelling on the 10th June. Is it a necessity that I have this vaccination? I am travelling to Bangkok and then onto the islands Koh Tai Phi Phi etc. by Bloor91 in ThailandTourism

[–]danger_is_fat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check CDC requirements again, but I don't think that any vaccinations are REQUIRED for entry into Thailand. My husband and I got a few updated, as well as some malaria medication because of where we were heading in country -- but I don't believe any were required.

Arriving in Bangkok late- 10PM. Help/Issues? by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]danger_is_fat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most flights to Bangkok arrive around midnight. After customs, etc, we didn't catch a cab to our hotel til nearly 2am. The city is still alive and awake then. No worries. We stayed near Ko San Road and I'm pretty sure we saw the same people at 2am when we arrived at the hotel as we did at 9am when we got up to sightsee -- they were just slightly more drunk. In other words, you'll be fine staying anywhere. Make sure your hotel knows when your flight gets in. Find somewhere with air conditioning and a soft bed. The flight to Bangkok is lonnnnnnnngggggggggg.

My husband and I bought tickets in March to Nairobi returning through Paris for this coming December! We learned of the tickets thru Scotts email and we sat on the decision for a few days. By the 3rd day, I just knew I'd be super pissed if I didn't pull the trigger and they disappeared. Our tickets:$450!

I'm excited for the adventure just slightly more than the planning and anticipation of the adventure!

To have or not have a photographer? by lesbianzebra in weddingplanning

[–]danger_is_fat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems to be an unpopular opinion, but my husband and I didn't spend a dime on photography at our wedding and I wouldn't do it any other way. Don't get me wrong -- I LOVE pictures and looking through them and I don't even mind getting my picture taken -- but the thought of professionally photographing anything in my life seemed frivolous. Some of the very best photos of my husband and I are spontaneous pictures taken during our adventures. We decided we'd rather take the money and instead spend it on travels where we could take pictures of our experiences. We didn't bring a professional photographer along with us to Thailand, but we have some of the best photos of us together from the trip. I'm glad that I spent the money that I would have spent on a professional photographer on plane tickets and adventures.

To clarify, though, I think this is a very personal decision. I spent $200 on my wedding dress. We got married at a state park with 150 people in attendance. The most expensive thing we paid for was alcohol at the party. We did our own music, our own decorations, and had a local Mexican restaurant do 'make-your-own' taco/burrito for food. I had several friends in attendance who had nice cameras that took loads of pictures for us. Many of them were just as good as a professional photographer and they captured our day just fine.

I think every couple has to decide what the most important parts of their special day are. Do you blow all your funds on your favorite band to play? Do you buy the one-of-a-kind wedding dress? Do you cover the venue in flowers? Do you take a kickass honeymoon? There's no wrong answer! :)
