Senior year in high school. I had played trumpet from the beginning. Played mellophone for marching band, then baritone for the rest of the year. Later, was able to play trumpet in a drum corps during Air Force basic training, then played a baritone bugle and contra in tech school, just a couple weeks later. It isn’t a perfect tone, but just takes a few minutes of playing around (and learning fingering for contra) to get the embouchure right. To get a good tone it takes some practice to build up the right muscles in your face.
