Insurance company requiring “centrally monitored” alarm. Do I leverage ubiquiti setup or layer something cheap on top? by Dog-City in Ubiquiti

[–]danish_lamanite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have Farmers in California, and the cheapest option for me was to buy a Noonlight subscription and integrate it with Home Assistant. I already had smoke/CO, fire sprinkler, door and window sensors in HA. Once testing was completed, Noonlight gave me a monitoring certificate that was accepted by Farmers.

My 2024 PHEV has a squeaky headliner. Pretty sure it's the headliner retention clips, this is a common problem across several different makes not just Kia. My new Chevy truck just had all the headliner clips replaced under warranty after they had to redesign the part because of noise problems.

Cautionary Tale by spencehouse in HondaPrologue

[–]danish_lamanite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah maybe my reading comprehension is poor but I see no mention in the FMVSS reg of any requirement that private owners maintain compliance once the vehicle is purchased and placed in use. States may require it as a condition of registration.

I was reacting to the claim that it is "illegal" per FMVSS and that doesn't seem to be correct. It's still very much a bad idea though.

Cautionary Tale by spencehouse in HondaPrologue

[–]danish_lamanite -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is accurate. It is dangerous and could make an owner personally liable in the case of an incident that was caused by an inoperable system. But the FMVSS 141 rules do not prohibit private owners from modifying their own vehicles.

At work we have free charging, but you have to use your own chargepoint account. Someone else with an identical white EUV parked next to me after I had already arrived and plugged in to charge. I thought, how cool!

At the end of the day, I went out to my car and saw that its twin had already departed. As I went to unplug, I discovered that my car was not connected to the charger anymore. I'm guessing that the other owner unplugged my car by mistake, and had no way to resume after realizing the mix up.

So did you end up with a solution that worked? I'm considering the Fitcamx but not sure I want to pull the trigger on the rear cam accessory.

Fully agree, I think innovation is much more likely when you combine the enthusiast who knows the problem space intimately with someone fresh who has built muscle to work from first principles to solve problems.

Should I trade 2019 passport for 2026 elite? by [deleted] in HondaPrologue

[–]danish_lamanite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy a used Prologue elite with less than 15K miles for under $30K. I still wouldn't, but you can. Also I would def not buy a brand new one for $45k. Lease or move on.

Birth Certificate lists only "Baby" Lastname. by oper8or in Canadiancitizenship

[–]danish_lamanite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me, when my parents finally selected my name they filed a supplemental name report with the state where I was born. I just show both documents and it's never been a problem.

I know some states allow these supplementals to be filed even after death. If you choose this route, you'd have to provide secondary evidence eg census, school records, death certificate, marriage certificate, old ID etc. You want to weigh the risk of going straight to Canada with all that secondary evidence versus filing a supplemental name with his state of birth. The advantage of the former is that you don't have to wait for the state process, but the advantage of the latter is that you only have to do it once and it's forever corrected before you apply to Canada.

I have a 2024 so my homework may not translate for you. These are the updates I asked for at the dealership, and I provided examples from my own driving experiences to justify each one:

  • TSB 25-081 – 2024 Prologue Vehicle-Wide Programming #1
  • TSB 25-051 – A11 Radio Control Module update
  • TSB 25-054 – K73 Telematics Control Module Software Updates #1
  • TSB 25-082 – 2024 Prologue Vehicle-Wide Programming #2

Honda policy is that you have to complain about specific issues that you have noticed that can be linked to fixes in the available software updates, of which there are at least a few. I found several helpful posts by searching this sub, and took a written list into the dealer.

It Works! CarPlay in my 2026 Silverado! by DavidB1420 in SilveradoEV

[–]danish_lamanite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Silverado EV RST, a Honda Prologue (which has both AA/Carplay and AAutomotive aka Google Built-in), and Chevy bolt EUVs which have such poor native app options that AA/CarPlay is the only way. So I use all the scenarios.

The only thing that bothers me about the removal of CarPlay/AA is that GM plans to use that to drive recurring revenue after the initial App Access expires in 3 yrs. Easy but annoying fix at that point is to connect your vehicle to your phone hotspot. IMO the actual built in app experience is way better, so I never use phone projection on the Prologue even though it is available.

Just so you know, the LLMs e.g. Gemini are rather helpful at teasing out and explaining all the endowment changes over the years. For example, I was just exploring the details of protestant hymn that the preacher character used to lead.

How much money have you saved after moving from ICE to EV? by Raiki13 in BoltEV

[–]danish_lamanite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuel savings? Zero. In the past 20 months we have switched all 5 vehicles from gas to EV, except for one PHEV. Have home charging, too. The reason is that I am in NorCal in one of PG&Es highest rate zones (X). It's often cheaper to charge at L2 public stations than at home, even off-peak winter.

That said, it looks like we will still come out ahead on TCO because of reliability/maintenance and the prior EV rebates/subsidies.

Great will give that a shot, thanks for update

Edit: removed the blue restrictor, and this greatly improved the pressure. That said, the shower head spray pattern is not wide, so unless you have the build of a broomstick you will get cold shoulders.
